All five films in the series starring Charles Bronson as a vigilante out for revenge. In 'Death Wish' (1974) mild-mannered New York architect Paul Kersey (Bronson) takes the law into his own hands after his wife is murdered and his daughter raped by a gang of thugs. Jeff Goldblum makes his big-screen debut as one of the unfortunate muggers. In 'Death Wish 2' (1981), after the suicide of his daughter in response to another violent attack, Kersey returns to the streets to deal out revenge to her assailants on a one by one basis. 'Death Wish 3' (1985) sees Kersey, still distraught at the loss of his family, take his rage out on street gangs with weapons including sub-machine guns and missile launchers. In 'Death Wish 4 - The Crackdown' (1987) the death of his girlfriend's daughter from an overdose makes Kersey determined to wipe out L.A.'s drug dealers. Finally, in 'Death Wish 5 - The Face of Death' (1993) the harassment of Kersey's girlfriend Livia (Lesley-Anne Down) by her ex-husband, O'Shea (Michael Parks), a Mafia boss using her business to launder money, forces Kersey back towards the gun cupboard one final time.

Walter Hill's colourful directorial debut has quite a cult following for its toughness and violence, and it may well be his best film. Charles Bronson plays a silent street fighter in 1930s New Orleans, managed by the cool James Coburn. Jill Ireland, Strother Martin, and Michael McGuire co-star in this spare existential Depression dirge. It owes a lot to its noir origins that Hill adores so much, yet there's something very fresh and vital about its subject and approach. That's really what made so many of these films from the '70s so endearing. A bonus is the love and affection displayed by the real-life husband and wife team of Bronson and Ireland. --Bill Desowitz

Death WishIn this explosive story of revenge and urban violence Charles Bronson plays Paul Kersey a bleeding-heart liberal who has a change of opinion after his wife and daughter are violently attacked by a gang of thugs in their apartment. His daughter is raped and his wife is raped and murdered. Bronson then turns vigilante as he stalks the mean streets of New York on the prowl for muggers hoodlums and the like. Death Wish is a violent controversial film that is frank and original in its treatment of urban crime and the average citizen's helplessness in dealing with it. Herbie Hancock wrote the musical score and Jeff Goldblum makes his big screen debut as one of the thugs. Death Wish 2Paul Kersey is trying to pick up the pieces of his life in Los Angeles California. His architectural business is successful he has a new girlfriend and although his daughter hasn't recovered from the trauma of her assault she's slowly becoming happier and learning to speak again. But peace is not destined to last and Kersey soon finds himself the victim of a petty crime when some street punks swipe his wallet but this is only a light premonition of things to come. Not satisfied with the wallets contents decides to escalate their crime to a home invasion. They break into Kersey's home and when he tries to retaliate Kersey is viciously beaten and his maid is kicked to death. The punks kidnap his daughter and bring her to their hideout where they rape her thereby causing her to commit suicide. Now Kersey has lost all faith in the justice system and offers no co-operation with local law enforcement. He has plans of his own for each of the thugs that assaulted his family...plans that include their premature deaths. The UK version is based on the unrated version but was censored approx. 3 mins. by the BBFC. Death Wish 3He's Judge Jury and Executioner! Paul Kersey doesn't seek out violence. Freddie dons women's clothing to follow Olivia into a ladies' room where he smashes her face into a mirror causing permanent disfigurement. In the offices of D.A. Tony Hoyle and his associate Hector Vasquez Paul and Olivia vow to see to it that Tommy is prosecuted. Later Freddie and two of his men disguise themselves as cops infiltrate Olivia's apartment and shoot Olivia dead. Now Kersey is ready to take things into his own hands. Kersey follows Tommy's thug Chickie Paconi to the Paconi family bistro where Kersey kills Chickie by lacing his cannelloni with cyanide. Next Paul tricks Freddie out of his fortress-like home and blows him up with a rigged ball. After dispatching the corrupt Hector Vasquez with a gun concealed in a doll Kersey discovers that D.A. Hoyle is in cahoots with Tommy. Using Chelsea as bait Tommy lures Paul to Olivia's factory for a confrontation.

One of several impressive westerns Charles Bronson made during his 1970s heyday, The Valdez Horses reunites the rugged star with celebrated director John Sturges, who he had previously collaborated with on the perennial classics The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. A surprisingly thoughtful film, The Valdez Horses sees Bronson play a half-breed rancher whose solitary life taming wild horses is upended when three people enter his life: a young runaway (Vincent Van Patten), a corrupt landowner (Marcel Bozzuffi, The French Connection), and his beautiful sister (Jill Ireland, Breakout, The Valachi Papers). Beautifully filmed in mountains of Almería, Spain, a quintessential Spaghetti Western location, Sturges' film contrasts fistfights and shootouts with considered characterisation and an unexpectedly melancholy tone. • Hell Drivers [1957]Hell Drivers | DVD | (26/01/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Hell Drivers sees James Bond (Sean Connery), Doctor Who (William Hartnell), one of the men from UNCLE (David McCallum), the Prisoner (Patrick McGoohan) and a Professional (Gordon Jackson), all supporting Stanley Baker in this hard-as-nails British action picture realistically set in a bleak late-1950s England. Baker plays Tom Yately, an ex-con who takes the only job he can get--truck driving at breakneck speeds for a corrupt manager (Hartnell) and brutal foreman (McGoohan). The constant short runs and competition between the drivers makes for an intense atmosphere which inevitably explodes into violence. Baker's only friend is an Italian ex-POW played sensitively by Herbert Lom, while Peggy Cummings is a remarkably free-spirited heroine for a British film of the time. Baker himself is superb, quietly tough, and broodingly charismatic, McGoohan is compellingly malevolent and Hartnell simply chilling. The film is consistently engrossing and often exciting, even when the plot spirals into melodrama towards the finale. One has to wonder where the police are during all this mayhem, but the fact that the screenplay, by John Kruse and Cy Endfield, received a BAFTA nomination suggests the scenario was at least reasonably realistic. Endfield also directed this, the second of six films he would helm for Baker, the most famous of which would be the all-time classic, Zulu (1964). On the DVD: Hell Drivers is presented in an anamorphically enhanced ratio of 1.77:1. This means a little of the original 1.96:1 VistaVision (70mm) image is cropped at the sides, which is just noticeable in a few shots. The print used is excellent, with only very minor damage, and the mono sound is fine. The disc also includes Look in on Hell Drivers, a 1957 TV programme that offers interviews with Stanley Baker, Cy Endfield and Alfie Bass, as well as comments from genuine truck drivers confirming the realism of the story, and a contemporary 15-minute television interview with Baker, which focuses on Hell Drivers, Sea Fury(1958) (also directed by Cy Endfield) and Violent Playground (1958). The original trailer rounds out an excellent package. --Gary S Dalkin
