Sir John Barbirolli (1899-1970) was on of the most important British conductors of the last century. He began his musical career as a cellist playing with various ensembles before forming a chamber orchestra in Chelsea for which he served as conductor. His reputation as a conductor of note was established when he substituted for Sir Thomas Beecham at a London Symphony Orchestra Concert in 1927. He led performances at Covent Garden from 1929-1933 after which he was named conductor of the Scottish Orchestra Glasgow and the Leeds Symphony Orchestra. After a successful U.S. debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1936 Barbirolli was appointed the Philharmonic's principal conductor a position he held until 1943. Then back in England he took charge of the Halle Orchestra of Manchester and dispite other engagements remained that orchestra's conductor-in-chief until 1968 when he retired with the title of Conductor Laureate for life. Barbirolli was knighted in 1949 and made a Companion of Honour in 1969.Among the players in Scottish Orchestra during Barbirolli's tenure was one of the foremost oboists of the century Evelyn Rothwell (b. 1911) whom the conductor married in 1939. Rothwell studied with Leon Goosens at the Royal College of Music in London and went on to play with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra in its early years (1934-1939). In 1971 she became a professor of oboe at the Royal Academy of Music in London and in 1984 she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

  • Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe - An Evening Of YesAnderson Bruford Wakeman Howe - An Evening Of Yes | DVD | (07/05/2007) from £20.09   |  Saving you £-1.84 (N/A%)   |  RRP £16.99

Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe was made up of four fifths of the 'Classic Yes' line up of the seventies. Put together by Jon Anderson who wanted to get back to the musical ideals made popular by 'Yes' during the bands massively successful albums of the early to mid seventies the band recorded one self titled album released in 1989 and then embarked on an extensive and hugely successful worldwide tour. This performance was captured on the American leg of the world tour and finds the band performing not only material from the self titled album but also classic material from 'Yes' including Starship Trooper Close To The Edge and also And You And I. The tour was not however without its problems and bassist on the tour Tony Levin was unfortunately taken ill and had to drop out at the last minute to be admitted to hospital. This left the band in dire straits as the tour was put in jeopardy and the band had also scheduled the filming of this particular performance. Enter bassist Jeff Berlin who had curiously enough like Tony Levin played with Bill Bruford. With only a short period of rehearsal Jeff threw himself into the gap vacated by the departed Tony Levin. Jeff's performance was incredible as was the rest of the band and captured on film for posterity. The film was previously briefly available on VHS before being deleted. Now on DVD this magnificent fan favourite comes in a double digipack with original Roger Dean artwork and also a beautiful DVD photo booklet along with new sleeve notes. Tracklist 1. Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra 2. Jon Anderson Solo: Time And A Word/Teakbois/Owner of A Lonely Heart 3. Steve Howe Solo - The Clap/Mood For A Day 4. • The Twilight Zone - Vol. 20 [1963]The Twilight Zone - Vol. 20 | DVD | (23/04/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

In 1959 screenwriter Rod Serling first opened the door to the "dimension of imagination" that is The Twilight Zone, a show quite unlike anything that had gone before, and better than much that has followed in its wake. This original and daring television series ran for a magnificent five seasons from 1959 to 1964 and still looks as fresh as ever, particularly on DVD. What distinguished the series (and still does) is the quality of the scripts, many of which were penned by Serling, but with significant contributions from veteran sci-fi authors and screenwriters such as Richard Matheson. Actors of the calibre of Robert Redford, Burgess Meredith, Lee Marvin and William Shatner gave some of their best small-screen performances, while an unforgettable main title theme by Bernard Herrmann and musical contributions from young turks such as Jerry Goldsmith underlined the show's attraction for great creative talent both behind and in front of the cameras. --Mark Walker
