The simple words 'Good evening' have never been the same since legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock took to the small screen as the host of Alfred Hitchcock Presents an anthology of classic mystery and suspense stories. Each episode opens with Hitchcock's instantly recognizable silhouette and the show's creepily familiar theme song. The famously contrary host fills in the audience on a detail of the episode while poking not so subtle fun at the show's advertisers. Elements of horror comedy suspense and things that go bump in the night all seasoned with a trademark Hitchcock twist distinguish the 30-minute stories. Episodes Comprise: 1. Wet Saturday 2. Shocker allows Wes Craven to hang onto his title as the master of the horror genre--but only just. Centring once more on a charismatic lead character (Horace Pinker) Shocker continues Craven's penchant for combining fantasy and horror. Pinker (played with zeal by Mitch Pileggi of X-Files fame) is a serial killer--the "family slasher"--terrorising the inhabitants of the city of. Having murdered the foster family and girlfriend of all-American boy Jonathon Parker (Peter Berg), the latter finds he can foresee Pinker's actions in his dreams. The resulting supernatural developments (including ghosts, magic charms and possessed bodies) are more than a little muddled but underpinned by the continuous gruesome hack and slash action. A film with its brain most definitely disengaged, Shocker is still undemanding, wince-inducing fun. On the DVD: Not much to offer from this format. The splendidly dated 1980's American heavy metal soundtrack (including Kiss and Megadeth) comes through loud and clear and the sound effects are certainly horribly audible. Picture quality is fine but not spectacular. Extras are limited to scene selection, the trailer and a selection of storyboards and their cinematic equivalents. --Phil Udell

The first of several lavish Christie adaptations from producers John Brabourne and Richard Goodwin introducing Albert Finney as the first screen Hercule Poirot. This 1974 production of Agatha Christie's 1934 classic is a judicious mixture of mystery murder and nostalgia. Which member of the all-star cast onboard the luxurious train perforated the no-good American tycoon with a dagger twelve times? Was it Ingrid Bergman's shy Swedish missionary; or Vanessa Redgrave's English rose; Sean Connery as an Indian Army Colonel: Michael York or Jacqueline Bisset; perhaps Lauren Bacall; Anthony Perkins or John Gielgud as the victim's impassive butler. Finney spreads unease among them with subdued wit and finesse. Arguably the most successful screen adaptation of a Christie novel in addition to Bergman's Oscar for Best Supporting Actress 'Murder On The Orient Express' achieved nominations for Best Actor Screenplay Photography Costume Design and Music Score.

Hayley Mills and Oliver Reed star in Kinglsy Amis' sophisticated sex comedy, directed by Jonathan Miller. Pretty young teacher Jenny Bunn (Hayley Mills) moves down south in the swinging sixties. Jenny's hardly had time to settle into her digs before local lothario Patrick (Oliver Reed) spots her, wines and dines her and sweeps her back to his place for a night of (in his mind) meaningless sex. It's then that Patrick makes a truly shocking discovery: Jenny is a virgin - and intends to stay that way. Patrick hasn't met a virgin before, so he's totally confused - and a bit scared. Can he persuade the virtuous Jenny to join the permissive society or should he just give up and settle for the easy charms of randy TV show girl Wendy (Aimi McDonald)? Whatever he's going to do, he'd better do it fast - because Jenny's grubby old landlord Dick (John Bird) and super-rich socialist Julian (Noel Harrison) are also sniffing around her... With a great supporting cast that includes Sheila Hancock, Ronald Lacey John Fortune and Penelope Keith, and a witty script from George Melly, Take A Girl Like You is a saucy British classic available on DVD for the very first time.

  • Plan 9 From Outer SpacePlan 9 From Outer Space | DVD | (11/04/2009) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Sometimes a movie achieves such legendary status that it can't quite live up to its reputation. Plan 9 from Outer Space is not one of these movies. It is just as magnificently terrible as you've heard. Plan 9 is the story of space aliens who try to conquer the Earth through resurrection of the dead. Psychic Criswell narrates ("Future events such as these will affect you in the future!") as police rush through the cemetery, occasionally clipping the cardboard tombstones in their zeal to find the source of the mysterious goings-on. More than just a bad film, Plan 9 is something of a one- stop clearinghouse for poor cinematic techniques: The time shifts whimsically from midnight to afternoon sun, Tor Johnson flails desperately in an attempt to rise from his coffin, and flying saucers zoom past on clearly visible strings. Fading star Bela Lugosi tragically died during filming, but such a small hurdle could not stop writer-producer-director Ed Wood. Lugosi is ingeniously replaced with a man who holds a cape across his face and might as well have "NOT BELA LUGOSI" stamped on his forehead. Plan 9 is so sweetly well- intentioned in both its message and its execution that it's impossible not to love it. And if you don't, well, as Eros says, "You people of Earth are idiots!" --Ali Davis

  • Bob Roberts [DVD]Bob Roberts | DVD | (02/11/2015) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-10.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Written and directed by actor Tim Robbins (who also plays the title role), this 1992 mock documentary about an upstart candidate for the U.S. Senate is smart, funny, and scarily prescient in its foreshadowing of the Republican revolution of 1994. Bob Roberts is a folksinger with a difference: He offers tunes that protest welfare chiselers, liberal whining, and the like. As the filmmakers follow his campaign, Robbins gives needle-sharp insight into the way candidates manipulate the media. While the film follows Roberts's campaign, it also covers a fringe journalist (Giancarlo Esposito), who may have dug up the kind of dirt to push Roberts's campaign off the rails. Robbins captures the chilly insincerity of this right-wing populist and fills his cast with terrific supporting players, including Alan Rickman as the campaign's shadowy financier and Susan Sarandon and Peter Gallagher as a pair of airhead TV news anchors. --Marshall Fine
