To get back at the Agency, Cox works on his memoirs. Through a twist of fate, fitness club workers Linda (Frances McDormand) and Chad (Brad Pitt in a pompadour that recalls Johnny Suede) find the disc and try to wrangle a "Samaratin tax" out of the surly alcoholic. An avid Internet dater, Linda plans to use the money for plastic surgery, oblivious that her manager, Ted (The Visitor's Richard Jenkins), likes her just the way she is. Though it sounds like a Beltway remake of The Big Lebowski, the Coen entry it most closely resembles, this time the brothers concentrate their energies on the myriad insecurities endemic to the mid-life crisis--with the exception of Chad, who's too dense to share such concerns, leading to the funniest performance of Pitt's career. If Lebowski represented the Coen's unique approach to film noir, Burn sees them putting their irresistibly absurdist stamp on paranoid thrillers from Enemy of the State to The Bourne Identity. --Kathleen C.   She can't (and won't) drive 55.... Stephen King's novel about the twisted love affair between a boy and his car gets transferred to the screen, courtesy of suspense master John Carpenter. Although lacking some of the more outré supernatural elements of the source material, this high-octane cinematic tune-up more than delivers the goods, horror-wise (Christine's midnight rampages will never be forgotten)--as well as being a sly exposé of the random cruelties within the high-school pecking order. Keith Gordon (who has gone on to become a stellar director in his own right, with films such as A Midnight Clear and Mother Night to his credit) gives a wonderfully controlled central performance. Carpenter's atmospheric original score is backed up by a well-chosen collection of rock classics, including George Thorogood's "Bad to the Bone" (the titular character's all-too-apt theme song). --Andrew Wright

The community refuses to see their beloved sequoias wiped out and pleads with the greedy businessman to halt the destruction. As their clash of ideas rages on an even greater threat to the trees emerges. The Man From Utah (Dir. Robert N. Bradbury 1934): This John Wayne classic brings us to the rodeo. John Weston ('the Duke') has to deal with the corrupt patron who has killed some of the rodeo's performers and who fixes the competition to guarantee Weston to lose. Gangster Story (Dir. Walter Matthau 1960): Matthau plays mob leader Jack Martin whose girlfriend Carol (Grace) is desperate for him to give up his unlawful and dishonest lifestyle. The problem is Jack doesn't have the same yearning to turn his back on his shady past but the crunch comes when he persuades the bank manager to lease him an office in the building and promptly robs the bank! With events turning very nasty is there any point in Carol trying to save her man from himself when all the signs indicate that he's hell bent on a course to self-destruction. Beat The Devil (Dir. John Huston 1953): a wacky comedy that's played as straight as any film noir and is even funnier as a result. Five men (Bogart Lorre Morley Barnard and Tulli) are out to garner control over East African land which they believe contains a rich uranium ore lode. Billy Dannreuther (Bogart) is married to Maria (Gina Lollobrigida) the other four are their ""business associates"" and Jones and Underdown are added to the mix for some interesting diversification. As the boat leaves from Italy to Africa a hodge-podge of amusingly silly adventures begins. British Intelligence (Dir. William Nigh 1940): They say that Karloff preferred character parts and in British Intelligence he's Valdar a sabrescarred butler who might be a secret agent.
