  Kermit's Swamp Years is the full-length version of a one-off American cable television feature that sets out to show us the formative years of the future host of The Muppet Show. Its focus is a childhood adventure involving Kermit and his two best friends: a somewhat delinquent frog called Croaker, and a tremulous toad named Goggles. Though the film was, obviously, made some years after the death of Kermit's creator, Jim Henson, the wit, spirit and joy that informed Sesame Street and The Muppet Show are all discernible here. Henson's resounding genius was to understand that children can tell when they are being treated like idiots, and that they don't much care for it, which is why The Muppet Show is still enjoyed by adults who grew up with the programme, and why none of those adults will object to sitting through Kermit's Swamp Years with their children. On the DVD: Kermit's Swamp Years is presented anamorphically in 1.78:1 widescreen. Extras include behind-the-scenes footage, which reinforces the fact that the human magic necessary to animate the muppet characters is far more interesting and impressive than any amount of the computer wizardry now favoured by most similar films. There are also some quite well-done muppet pastiches of the common DVD special features, interviews with, and commentary from, the stars, and a collection of bloopers and out-takes. --Andrew Mueller

  Rio Grande was the last and least memorable of John Ford's famous cavalry trilogy (following Fort Apache and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon), but it none the less maintains an interesting continuity about the gentlemanly rules of military conduct. Here the focus is on the family. While creating a heated controversy over his handling of the Apache war, John Wayne must also contend with disgruntled wife Maureen O'Hara and estranged son Claude Jarman Jr, a new recruit trying to earn his father's love and respect. Ford suggests that there are two conflicting codes of honour in every cavalry officer's life, the personal as well as the professional, and that it takes an act of heroism to maintain both. It's fascinating to observe Wayne's progression throughout the trilogy, as his personal stakes intensify.   Barry Welsh Is Coming--The Cream brings together the highlights of three series from the nightmare spoof TV presenter. Drawn from a fine pedigree--the show was created by the people behind the marvellous Trigger Happy TV and Barry himself is portrayed with cringe-worthy accuracy by John Sparkes from Absolutely--the programme draws much of its humour from the same vein as Steve Coogan's mercurial Alan Partridge creation. Extremely regional in its source humour, other characters featured include Fishguard's own reporter Hugh Pugh, Celtic daredevil Geraint Pillock and Dave, Dave and Dave, the men from Animal Rescue Squad (think about it). It's all very rude, parochial and immature but also often very funny indeed. Those who have come across the TV show and indulged should not hesitate (there is much unbroadcast material), while those without a sensitive nature should certainly give it a thought.--Phil Udell
