  Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of the most popular authors of western fiction ever, and 60 years after his death many of his 78 books, such as Riders of the Purple Sage, are still in print. In the silent era Hollywood filmed many of his stories with stars such as Tom Mix and Jack Holt. Grey knew the west well, particularly the deserts of Arizona and Utah, and demanded accurate locations for the films. Later, however, many of these films were remade, sometimes two or three times, without Grey's involvement, and the relation between novels and films grew much looser. The films are quintessential B-moveis: black and white, just over an hour, featuring minor stars and formulaic plots with some music and comedy thrown in. Committed fans of the western genre will not be disappointed, and others will derive pleasure from the delightful Jane Greer in Sunset Pass and Tim Holt, son of Jack, in the other three films. The location shooting, mostly in the Lone Pine area of California, has an authentic feel. Titles are: Under the Tonto Rim (1947); Thunder Mountain (1947); Sunset Pass (1946); Wild Horse Mesa(1947). On the DVD: This box set contains two DVDs, each of which include two movies deriving from Zane Grey novels. Print quality and sound is generally acceptable, though Under the Tonto Rim has poor definition and is a bit scratchy. Aspect ratio is 14:9. The DVDs contain no extras of any kind. --Ed Buscombe

The final theatrical film from Italian horror maestro Mario Bava. Grim Reaper A group of young tourists take an unexpected side trip to a mysterious Greek Island. When they arrive they find the island's village deserted except for a strange woman who wanders the streets and disappears as quickly as she is seen. Attempting to return to their ship they find it has drifted away from the shore. Waiting for the tide to come in again the group must spend the night on the island. In the house they decide to use they find a young blind girl swinging a knife in panic. She tells them of a madman who stalks the island and smells of death and blood... Mutant Cult horror from director John 'Bud' Cardos. Run off the road while on their vacation brothers Josh and Mike (Wings Hauser and Lee Montgomery) discover a hideously maimed human corpse. When they take Sheriff Will Stewart (Sam Peckinpah regular Bo Hopkins) to the body all that remains are a few drops of an amber toxin that kills by devouring red blood cells. A nearby chemical plant has been illegally dumping toxic waste outside of town. When Mike is attacked and taken from his bed Josh and local girl Holly Pierce (Jody Medford) search for him.   A half-hour parody, Frankenthumb is one of a series of featurette pastiches of famous movies masterminded by Steve Oederkerk (Kung Pow: Enter the Fist) cast with human thumbs with CGI-inset mouths and eyes, a process that is weirder than it is funny. A précis of the 1931 Frankenstein, shot on impressive (and beautifully-lit) miniature sets, the film tells the old, old story: megalomaniac Dr Frankenthumb and his inept assistant Humpy create life in the laboratory, unleashing a monster named Pepper ("because he's brought spice into our lives") who goes on a rampage, menaces the daughter of a somewhat irritating Italian man, and is pursued by a mob into a burning windmill, whereupon a guest star from an earlier mini-epic (Bat Thumb) turns up to deliver some sort of an ending. One or two good jokes pop up, but probably not enough. On the DVD: Frankenthumb on disc is a very nice package, containing storyboards, manufactured outtakes and cast interviews, trailers for this and the rest of the series (Thumb Wars, The Blair Thumb, Thumbtanic, Bat Thumb, The Godthumb) and a mass commentary track by the entire creative team that makes a cheerful accompaniment. --Kim Newman

  Mutant X takes the useful SF trope of the mutant minority persecuted by the state and adds potentially interesting spins on which it rarely delivers. After a couple of pilot episodes that pushed into OTT visual stylishness, the show has settled into mildly repetitive though watchable blandness: for the most part it avoids story arcs and a large cast of regulars in favour of plugging its characters into the stock plots of television SF, such as doubles, vengeance crusades and untrustworthy lovers. On the DVD: Mutant X Series 1, Volume 3 contains the following episodes: "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Adam's invisible ex-lover Danielle needs stabilising by a gene resequencer which has been stolen from him by Eckhart's agents. "Double Vision". New mutant Maddie splits Emma into two--one Emma is completely ruthless and prepared to destroy Eckhart and the GSA at huge cost in life. "Blood Ties". Jesse meets his father again and is recruited by him to a vengeance crusade that may be a cover for industrial espionage. "Altered Ego". A mutant's power changes Adam into a ruthless villain determined to destroy his friends. The DVDs also contain trailers, a file on Genomex, interviews with the makeup artists and with Lauren Lee Smith (Emma). --Roz Kaveney

  Best of Jazz Open 1998 is not, as the title suggests, highlights from the entire "jazzopen" music festival which took place in Stuttgart in July 1998, but performances taken from the closing evening concert dedicated to the so-called "pope of jazz", presenter, festival organiser and producer Joachim-Ernst Berendt. The musicians were chosen in collaboration with Berendt, resulting in some remarkable music-making from the haunting solo trombone of Albert Mangelsdorff, to the breathtaking duel/duet between Robert Majewski's trumpet and Hendryk Miskiewicz's saxophone which forms the climax of "Night Time Day Time-Requiem". Though obviously improvised one might argue whether the virtuoso digitally processed performance by Urszula Dudziak is jazz at all, while saxophonist John Handy joins forces with traditional Indian musicians the Maharaj Brothers moving eloquently in the world/fusion/crossover territory more famously explored by John McLaughlin. Appropriately they give way to the John McLaughlin Group itself, "Social Climate" offering an atmospheric mood piece for Gary Thomas' fine flute playing, leading to a rousing electric guitar climax by McLaughlin. A mixed bag from which some tracks will appeal more than others, it is regrettable that the complete concert was not included; this 57-minute collection looks as if it was originally edited to fill a one-hour TV slot. On the DVD: There are no special features except two trailers for classical DVDs. The programme is presented in standard TV 4:3 and is sharp and detailed, though there are occasional compression artefacts. The sound is stereo and while full and clear the mixes sometimes so favour the lead instrument that other details such as cymbal hits can be seen but barely heard. --Gary S. Dalkin
