  Even if all written and documentary evidence were to disappear, you could still get a real insight into Britain's involvement in the Second World War through feature films such as Above Us the Waves (1955) and In Which We Serve (1942). Directed by Ralph Thomas, Above Us the Waves tells of a Royal Navy mission to sink the "invincible" German battleship Tirpitz off the Norwegian coast. John Mills is calm and confident as the mission commander, with strong support from John Gregson and Donald Sinden--all treated by the German personnel as fellow gentlemen when captured. Despite stirring music from Arthur Benjamin, the action sequences are visually no more than adequate, and the film is only a partial success compared with the naval and domestic drama of the earlier In Which We Serve. Noël Coward wrote the screenplay and musical score, co-directed (with David Lean) and gave possibly his finest screen performance as the commander of HMS Torrin. His speech to the survivors of the sunken ship, as they prepare for reassignment, is just the highlight of a film packed with memorable visuals and perceptive dialogue. On the DVD: Though there are no additional features the black-and-white prints have come up excellently in the 4:3 video aspect ratio. There are 15 access points for each film, though the lack of subtitles is an unfortunate omission. These are period pieces that capture the mood of an era.--Richard Whitehouse

It seems there is no shortage of candidates who would be delighted to see the demise of a troublesome food critic and when Secord is revealed to have a double life the list of suspects lengthens. When the robber is caught it quickly becomes difficult to believe that he is capable of such a killing. A local chef and ex-con becomes a suspect but when another chef Rob Cade is reported missing having beaten up his wife suspicions fall on him. Before he ran off he left a damning review of his establishment by Barry Secord pinned to the office wall with a lethal looking knife. However the team are thrown when Cade turns up dead in a cottage out of town. He appears to have been murdered by the same killer. Eventually inquiries lead the team to a corrupt investment finance house in Edinburgh. Secord's big story was to expose the company for preying on talented success stories like chefs footballers and local celebs and unburdening them of their new found wealth. The company is about to secure a contract to front a bid from a huge American gambling concern to build a mega casino next to the Clyde. It turns out they have taken drastic steps to silence anyone who might make trouble for them.

  The most popular movie in the "classic Trek" series of feature films, Star Trek IV was a box-office smash that satisfied mainstream audiences and hard-core fans alike. The Voyage Home returns to one of the favourite themes of the original TV series--time travel--to bring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov from the 23rd century to present-day (i.e., mid-1980s) San Francisco. In their own time, the Starfleet heroes encounter an alien probe emitting a mysterious message--a message delivered in the song of the now-extinct Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the probe will result in Earth's destruction, so Kirk and company time-travel to 20th-century Earth--in their captured Klingon starship--to transport a humpback whale to the future in an effort to communicate peacefully with the alien probe. The plot sounds somewhat absurd in description, but as executed by returning director Leonard Nimoy, this turned out to be a crowd-pleasing adventure, filled with a great deal of humour derived from the clash of future heroes and contemporary urban realities, and much lively interaction among the favourite Trek characters. Catherine Hicks plays the 20th-century whale expert who is finally convinced of Kirk's and Spock's benevolent intentions. --Jeff Shannon

  The love story that will scare the life out of you! Cliff Robertson (soon to be seen in Spiderman) stars as wealthy American businessman Michael Courtland whose life is turned upside-down on his tenth wedding anniversary. After a lavish party Michael and his wife Elizabeth (Genevieve Bujold) hear a scream from their daughter Amy's bedroom. Elizabeth runs to see what's wrong but doesn't return and by the time Michael reaches the room both have disappeared but he finds a ransom note demanding 0 000. In order to save his family Michael arranges to sell his interest in the business to his partner Robert LaSalle (John Lithgow) but Inspector Brie of the New Orleans police advises against giving in to the kidnappers. An attache case filled with fake notes and a radio transmitter is handed over and a furious chase ensues when the kidnapper escape with Elizabeth and Amy ending in a collision with a petrol tanker. The kidnappers' car bursts into flames and plunges into the river apparantly killing Michael's beloved wife and daughter. Sixteen years later Michael and La Salle go to Florence on a business trip. Michael can't resist revisiting the cathedral where he met Elizabeth and it is here that he meets a young Italian woman called Sandra who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife. Sandra (also played by Genevieve Bujold) and Michael fall in love and return to the States and Sandra develops a fascination for Elizabeth even wearing her jewellry and styling her hair in the same way. However Michael's new found happiness is short-lived. During their wedding night Sandra disappears and Michael awakes to find a ransom note.... The haunting music was scored by Bernard Hermann and was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Original Score' in 1977. Hermann also composed the music for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo which inspired De Palma to write Obsession.
