An attache case filled with fake notes and a radio transmitter is handed over and a furious chase ensues when the kidnapper escape with Elizabeth and Amy ending in a collision with a petrol tanker. The kidnappers' car bursts into flames and plunges into the river apparantly killing Michael's beloved wife and daughter. Sixteen years later Michael and La Salle go to Florence on a business trip. Michael can't resist revisiting the cathedral where he met Elizabeth and it is here that he meets a young Italian woman called Sandra who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife. Sandra (also played by Genevieve Bujold) and Michael fall in love and return to the States and Sandra develops a fascination for Elizabeth even wearing her jewellry and styling her hair in the same way. However Michael's new found happiness is short-lived. During their wedding night Sandra disappears and Michael awakes to find a ransom note.... The haunting music was scored by Bernard Hermann and was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Original Score' in 1977. Hermann also composed the music for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo which inspired De Palma to write Obsession.

  Thomas Jane stars as Beat writer and Jack Kerouac-crony Neal Cassady in The Last Time I Committed Suicide, a promising film that quickly flops. Based on a letter Cassady wrote to Kerouac, this highly stylised feature from director Stephen Kay pretty much follows the former around as he does not much of anything at all. Keanu Reeves is incomprehensible as a friend of Cassady, and Kay's jazzy, angular, colliding style does nothing to illuminate the Beat icon's all-important internal life. If you're new to the whole Kerouac-Cassady-Beat world, this is not a good first stop; slightly better is John Byrum's 1980 Heart Beat, which at least introduces some of the principal figures. --Tom Keogh

  Ever felt the chill wind of déjà vu? You will with Stag, as its entire premise follows that of director Peter Berg's none-more-black comedy Very Bad Things to the letter--except that Stag actually came first. While Very Bad Things starred Cameron Diaz and Christian Slater and therefore got a cinema release, Stag stars (oh dear) Mario Van Peebles, ex-Brat Pack star Andrew McCarthy and Taylor Dayne, and therefore didn't grace the silver screen. Van Peebles plays Michael, the loyal best friend and housemate of Victor (John Stockwell) who is poised to leave the buddy fold for marriage and domesticity. So, being a pal, Michael organises a surprise stag party for Victor, and invites along a host of their old crowd--including, regrettably, drug dealer and racketeer Pete (McCarthy), and the obligatory pair of strippers, Serena and Kelly (Dayne and Jenny McShane). Of course, things swiftly turn rowdy, Kelly falls to her wholly accidental death, and the boys have to cover up the death fast. Having established this nightmarish scenario, Stag veers away from the Gap-ad Grand Guignol of Very Bad Things and instead attempts to juggle suspense, melodrama, and a fairly ponderous examination of modern-male morality. The results aren't particularly edifying, but they do display a certain conviction, even if it's never satisfactorily explained why Van Peebles spends the entire film without eyebrows.
