  Even though Transformers--Generation 2 was released after Transformers Volume 1, it shouldn’t be confused with Transformers--Volume 2. Got that? Good, because Transformers--Generation 2 is a collection that is best left to the completists and die-hard collectors. There’s no denying that the five episodes here ("More Than Meets the Eye Parts One – Three", "SOS Dinobots" and "Heavy Metal War") are all classics. It’s just unfortunate that the versions on offer are from the later Generation 2 series. See, after the Transformers franchise had all but sunk into obscurity, the toys were relaunched and given a new shot at life as Generation 2. And just as the old toys were given new paint jobs, the old episodes were updated and enhanced by the best technology a relatively low-budget production could buy. What this translates into is lots of annoying computer graphics (called the "Cybernet Space Cube") popping up at random intervals to denote a new scene, or even just a change in camera angle or character perspective. The results would test the limits of even the shortest attention spans. So while Transformers--Generation 2 does collect some of the finest episodes of the Transformers cartoon, telling the origin of the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons and how they came to earth, as well as introducing the popular Dinobots and Constructicons, it’s ultimately a frustrating experience. Fortunately, there are better Transformers DVDs out there. --Robert Burrow

  Bel canto can be translated as "pretty singing", and that definition seems tailor-made for this production, which offers grace, charm, and a fine-tuned sense of style in abundance to compensate for its limited psychological and emotional impact. The four principal singers are all specialists in the bel canto style and this opera has played a key role in building their substantial reputations. For its sweeping musical imagination and technical wizardry, Rossini's epic about royal assassination and misdirected lust in the ancient Babylonian Empire deserves a place in any inclusive opera collection, and we are not likely to have a better video recording of Semiramide in the foreseeable future. June Anderson has an attractive appearance and sounds exactly right in the music's florid melodic lines. But she is not dramatically compelling as the wicked queen who had her husband killed and fell in love with a man who turned out to be her long-lost son, Arsace. Marilyn Horne rose to the highest levels of international fame in the role of that conflicted son, and her presence alone would be enough to give this video classic status. Her voice was a bit past its prime when this performance was recorded in 1991, but still there is no other voice quite like it, no other voice so suited to Rossini's heroic mezzo roles. Samuel Ramey is a close bass counterpart to Anderson: great tone, agile florid singing, and a rather wooden but visually appealing stage presence. Sanford Olsen has a small role and sings it near perfectly. James Conlon gets excellent musical results; John Copley's staging is massive and static. --Joe McLellan, Amazon.com

In Camera: DI Robbie Ross is in trouble when he discovers the body of a young man in a house along with his lady friend. However there's more trouble on the horizon when his past troubles come back to haunt him whilst trying to solve the death of the young man and subsequent deaths but what do they relate to and is the past of DI Robbie Ross actually linked to the present killings?

One of the most intelligently paranoid science fiction films ever produced, this pessimistic masterpiece functions as a dark flip side to the relatively optimistic alien-induced evolution theory presented in the later 2001: A Space Odyssey. Nigel Kneale's brilliant script (which posits a surprisingly plausible, otherworldly rationale for the existence of the supernatural) was later appropriated by acknowledged fan John Carpenter for his underrated Prince of Darkness.   Earth vs. The Spider can't really make up its mind whether it's an homage to the B-movie horror genre (the title, but nothing else, has been lifted from the 1958 drive-in "classic"), a too-ironic-for-its-own-good spoof, or an uncomplicated but genuine monster flick. It passes as any of the above, so take your pick. The plot is hardly demanding: nerd's pal is murdered, nerd vows revenge, nerd injects himself with bug juice which turns him into a spider-like monstrosity, offs some bad guys then gets shot dead. Despite its lack of content, the movie's merciful brevity (one hour 26 minutes, roughly what all movies used to be) means that the pace is fast and that there's no room for padding (or real sub-plots, for that matter). The special effects are good and used surprisingly sparingly, which is a nice touch, and the brief coda is sarcastically witty. There's also what seems at first to be a nod in the direction of Toho's multi-monster epics, but those two giant furry caterpillars are in fact Theresa Russell's eyebrows. On the DVD: Earth vs. The Spider on disc is presented in 1.77:1 ratio. Extras include filmographies and a very brief "making of". The preliminary sketches of the creature in the photo gallery are well worth seeing. --Roger Thomas
