Gene Hackman is a career officer assigned a routine mission well beneath him: deliver a prisoner (Tommy Lee Jones) from Europe to the United States. However, the simple assignment becomes a daring cat-and-mouse game played as the last flames of the Cold War are flickering. This is the first of three films that teamed Jones with director Andrew Davis. In 1989 Jones was a wild card: an actor respected but only popping up in grade B fare. After Davis' Under Siege and The Fugitive, Jones was America's favourite gruff character actor, with an Oscar on his mantel. With a weaker script, Davis still creates the same kind of magic here. Hackman is superb as the officer, an action role similar to others that the nearly 60-year-old unexpectedly excelled at (Bat 21, Narrow Margin) during this period. Tight, tense and with no letup in the third act, The Package is a good gem for a Saturday night flick. --Doug Thomas

The Flaxborough Chronicles. Murder Most English contains four terrific tales of detective sleuthing based on the Flaxborough novels of Colin Watson. Starring Anton Rodgers as Detective Inspector Purbright and Christopher Timothy as Detective Sergeant Love the series was filmed in 1977 and is a glowing tribute to an England long-gone of heavy tweed jackets dial telephones typewriter ribbons and old-fashioned investigation and deduction. Told over 7 episodes: Hopjoy Was Here Lonelyheart 4122 The Flaxborough Crab and Coffin Scarcely Used tell tales of mysterious murders dire disappearances and conniving conspiracy that are designed to keep the local investigators at bay but their layers of intrigue simply draw the detectives in deeper. One surprising and prescient tale considers the effects of an early variation on Viagra that sets the small town astir in some most unexpected ways. But whatever the crime and whoever the culprit one thing you can be sure of is a case or two of Murder Most English.

  • Clockwise [1985]Clockwise | DVD | (22/04/2002) from £19.19   |  Saving you £-2.21 (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

Clockwise is a light-hearted farce that works because John Cleese is so effective as the tightly wound, punctilious headmaster whose well-organised life unravels in a series of disasters on his journey to a conference. Cleese is a master of fussy, fastidious characters in exasperating situations, bottling up his frustration under good manners and sardonic comments until he finally blows, but he’s also startlingly vulnerable as he systematically loses all sense of himself. Dressed in monk’s robes and stranded on a lonely country road, he looks down at his naked wrist and sighs, "I’ve even lost the time". Michael Fryan (the playwright of Noises Off) doesn’t really have much of a story behind the situations, but he provides plenty of complications, and Cleese holds the film together with his brittle manner, single-minded drive, and hilarious headmaster’s condescending haughtiness. While it will seem slight to many, Cleese fans will love it.--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

  • Croupier [1999]Croupier | DVD | (14/04/2003) from £5.41   |  Saving you £4.58 (84.66%)   |  RRP £9.99

The Croupier sees Clive Owen suffering from a bad case of writer's block as author Jack Manfred. Sitting in his London flat staring at an empty computer screen, trying to find the words to narrate his meandering life, he reluctantly accepts a job from his absentee father (Nicholas Ball) in a second rate casino as a dealer, or croupier, a job he once held in South Africa. His immersion back into this world is intoxicating, thanks primarily to the power he holds over his nightly clientele. Jack is a straight arrow on the floor (unlike his co-workers) but the whisper of an inside-job robbery makes his life suddenly more intriguing, as do the women who begin to drift into his life: a fellow croupier (Kate Hardie) and an alluring gambler (Alex Kingston). Suddenly, Jack finds his own life is his best book material. There's something visceral about watching the world of gambling, and director Mike Hodges (the original Get Carter) taps into this allure; Jack's simple croupier tryout--handling cards and chips with skill and grace--is as captivating as most action scenes in big popcorn films. In the end, this little film, which went on to become an art-house hit, is as unpredictable as a roll of the dice. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com
