  • Waxwork [1986]Waxwork | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £19.55   |  Saving you £-6.56 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

In Waxwork a waxwork museum appears overnight in an American small town and sinister showman David Warner invites a group of typical teens to a midnight party. However, as expected, the place is home to nasty secrets, and the blundering kids find themselves transported via the exhibits into the presence of "the 18 most evil men in history". What this means is that the film gets to trot out gory vignettes featuring such horror staples as Count Dracula (played inaptly with designer stubble and a Clint croak by ex-Tarzan Miles O'Keefe), the Marquis de Sade, an anonymous werewolf with floppy bunny ears (John Rhys-Davies in human form) and the Mummy. Nerdy hero Zach Galligan appeals to wheelchair-bound monster fighter Patrick MacNee for help. Waxwork is strictly a film buff's movie--with Warner and MacNee turning in knowingly camp performances, and references to everything from Crimes of Passion to Little Shop of Horrors cluttering up its very straggly story line. It's not without ragged charms, though the tone veers between comic and sick (the de Sade scene, although inexplicit, features some lurid dialogue) more or less at random. The effects are likewise variable, and in any case rather fudged by direction, which frequently fails to point up the gags properly. It winds up with a scrappy Blazing Saddles-style fight between the forces of Good and a whole pack of monsters, and the budget runs out before the climactic burning-down-the-waxworks scene. The episodic approach echoes the old Amicus omnibus horrors (Dr Terror's House of Horrors, The House that Dripped Blood etc.), and various cameos allow director Anthony Hickox to parody/emulate the styles of Hammer films, Night of the Living Dead and Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. On the DVD: It's a nice-looking and sounding print, but fullscreen format. The only extras are filmographies taken from the IMDB and the trailer.--Kim Newman

Paul Schrader's Forever Mine tells a not-very-compelling, still-less-credible story of love, betrayal and retribution. A cabana boy (Joseph Fiennes) at a Florida beach resort falls hard for a gorgeous guest (Gretchen Mol) neglected by her wheeler-dealer husband (Ray Liotta). After a steamy nude scene and a sweet, barefoot date, Fiennes follows her home to New York and declares undying love. Mol--a good Catholic girl who reads Madame Bovary--confesses the affair to Liotta. Being shadier than she realises, he arranges to have nasty things befall his rival. Cut to 14 years later (though in fact the movie has been shuffling time periods since the beginning) Fiennes, long presumed dead, resurfaces to lend his talents (he's become a master criminal) to the now thoroughly corrupt Liotta and sees what his beloved is up to. Fiennes has a new name and a scar on one side of his face, so neither recognises him. You don't have a problem with that, do you? Non-recognition is always a tricky proposition in movies, but Forever Mine's problems don't end there. Fiennes, sans Shakespeare in Love beard and Bardlike charisma, doesn't begin to suggest a guy who'd inspire obsession. His costar's attempt at creating a soul sister to Emma Bovary is as under-acted as it is underwritten, and Liotta's husband is just a lout, despite a desperate stab at giving him a virtually literary sensitivity regarding his romantic one-upping. If you want a spellbinding Schrader movie about outré passion and literary mystery, look up The Comfort of Strangers instead. --Richard T Jameson

In 1941 Dr RV Jones became convinced that the Germans had developed their own radar system that would account forincreasing RAF bomber casualties. The hunt was on! Eventually an enemy Wrzburg system was located on the cliffs ofNorthern France at Bruneval and seizing it would be the solution to overcoming the enemy radar problem. A joint operationwas planned by HQ Combined Ops that would involve all three Services, including the newly raised and barely parachutequalified C Company, 2nd Parachute Battalion, Commanded by Major John Frost. The planning went well but the rehearsals involving the Royal Navy were all disastrous. As the narrow window of moon andtide approached it was decided 'to bash on'. Nine of the twelve sticks of Paratroopers were dropped by 51 Squadron andthe Germans were caught napping on a winters night. However, they quickly responded and the Paras had a serious fighton their hands to keep the enemy at bay while the experts, who the Paras had orders to kill rather than let fall into enemyhands, dismantled. With the enemy closing in the job was done and the force started to withdraw but elements of Frostsplan were beginning to unravel. It seemed that they may be blocked but with the Paras converging on the beach theysecured their escape on the badly delayed Royal Navy landing craft. In Britain's darkest hour the success of the Bruneval raid was just what Churchill needed and the information gained saved the lives of many air crew.

  • Trauma [1993]Trauma | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Trauma was director Dario Argento's big crossover attempt at combining the Italian giallo genre with the American stalk 'n' slash. His fans may debate whether the result was a complete success, but the film certainly put his name in front of a wider international audience. Essentially the story is a psycho-murderer-mystery, with the audience made to piece together clues towards the identity-revealing denouement. The movie comes alive as a result of suitably intense performances, even while the characters die. Piper Laurie and Brad Dourif supply atypically explosive cameos. The leads are contrastingly subdued for the most part, no doubt because of their characters' involvement with drugs. Asia Argento (the director's daughter) is an anorexic who witnesses her parents' decapitations among a series of similar murders by the notorious "Headhunter". Christopher Rydell plays the ex-junkie who takes her in and helps track down the killer. Backing them up are some even greater performances from Tom Savini's eye-boggling special FX. With the aid of a motorised garrotte, the beheadings are gruesomely real, especially the one that leaves a head still able to talk. On the DVD: Trauma comes to disc in full 2.35:1 widescreen, though this isn't the clearest of transfers (plenty of artefacts present). The sound is in an unspecified Dolby mix. An interesting selection of extras almost makes up for the lack of a commentary. There are filmographies of Dario and Asia, a gallery of behind-the-scenes stills, and trailers for the movie Phantom of the Opera and several more in this series of releases. More interesting are the text features: interviews with Asia on her memories of the shoot and with renegade horror director Richard Stanley surreally recalling his long-term fandom of everything Argento. Most fascinating, there's a mini-essay on what was cut and why by the BBFC for the original UK video release. --Paul Tonks
