Driven by acute paranoia, Dean enlists the help of a clandestine former NSA operative named Brill (Gene Hackman) and Enemy of the State kicks into high-intensity hyperdrive. Teaming up once again with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Top Gun director Tony Scott demonstrates his glossy style with clever cinematography and breakneck pacing. Will Smith proves that there's more to his success than a brash sense of humour, giving a versatile performance that plausibly illustrates a man cracking under the strain of paranoid turmoil. Hackman steals the show by essentially reprising his role from The Conversation--just imagine his memorable character Harry Caul some 20 years later. Most of all, the film's depiction of high-tech surveillance is highly convincing and dramatically compelling, making this a cautionary tale with more substance than you'd normally expect from a Scott-Bruckheimer action extravaganza. --Jeremy Storey

  As In the Flesh--Live confirms, Pink Floyd fans can still get to hear their favourite numbers sung by the man who originated much of the band's songbook. Roger Waters took his latest show around a number of American stadiums in the summer of 2000, including a generous helping of Floyd numbers from 1968 to 83, and a selection from his subsequent solo albums. Tracks from The Wall make up the largest proportion of the concert, its angst lessened when interspersed among the more prog-rock ethos of the earlier 70s. His bass playing secure, Waters' voice has survived the passing of time reasonably well. He has the benefit of an emotional call-and-response with Katie Kissoon in "Mother", and serviceable back-up from Doyle Bramhall II, who overdoes the histrionics in recreating Dave Gilmour's guitar parts. The backing band is a class act, with Snowy White and Andy Fairweather Low trusty and responsive guitarists, and a rhythm section underpinned by Graham Broad's solid drumming. One for long-time fans, but a classy presentation in the best Floyd traditions. On the DVD: the High Definition visuals reproduce with needle-sharp accuracy--and a choice between 5.1 Dolby Digital or Surround Encoded PCM Stereo enables you to savour the elaborate stage set-up to the full (a technical guide is included). There are detailed biographies of all 10 band members, two dozen diverse photographic stills and a 20-minute behind-the-scenes documentary, with Waters seen inventing new card games and lending out replacement socks! --Richard Whitehouse

  I Love You to Death is a spotty black comedy from Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill)--based on a true story--that stars Kevin Kline as a womanising pizzeria owner whose mousy wife (Tracey Ullman) tries multiple ways of murdering him with the aid of sundry friends and hired hands. The film never picks up the necessary momentum or develops the necessary tone to drive it and one is left picking and choosing which of the performers is at least adequately entertaining. Kline is good but perhaps a bit too theatrical and Joan Plowright is hilarious as his mother-in-law. The funniest joke in the whole thing belongs to William Hurt and Keanu Reeves as deeply stoned, would-be-killers who emerge from a taxi and look as if they can't remember what planet they're on. --Tom Keogh

A slip and a Van der Sar save was all that was needed for Fergie's brave warriors to take advantage and capture the European Cup for a third time and fittingly almost as destiny decreed 50 years on from when the English pioneers of European football suffered the terrible tragedy of Munich.   This Western has become a modest cult favourite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

  You can't stop yourself from laughing (Gene Siskel Siskel and Ebert at the Movies) at the socially unredeeming despicable in poor taste utterly ridiculous (and) so funny (The Washington Post) Hot Shots! Charlie Sheen Lloyd Bridges Cary Elwes Valeria Golino and Jon Cryer star in this truly hilarious spoof of Top Gun from director Jim Abrahams (Airplane!). Sheen (TV's Two and a Half Men TV's Anger Management) portrays a renegade pilot recruited to join a top-secret mission for the air force and finds himself coping with an incompetent admiral (Bridges) a squadron of flyers who are either inept or half-blind and fierce competition with the corps' model of military perfection (Elwes) for the heart of the base's sultry psychiatrist (Golino)!
