A subtitled three-hour saga of an ordinary middle-class urban family in modern-day Taiwan, at first glance, A One and a Two might not seem the most appealing of prospects. But don't be misled: this is a film that draws you in with all the warmth and density of a good novel, and once you are past the surface unfamiliarity of Taipei society, there's nothing in this tale of a troubled family that would seem alien anywhere in the world. Romantic stories often end with a wedding. Realistic stories are as likely to begin with one. Writer-director Edward Yang's film starts in a mass of floaty white dresses and heart-shaped pink balloons, but the smiles seem a little too effusive, the jollity feels forced. And sure enough, disaster is lurking. The seeming simplicity of Yang's narrative style conceals a subtle, intricate design. His camera moves obliquely, often holding its distance from the action, letting us take in all the elements of a scene and draw our own conclusions. Wider social implications--about modern society, about international business ethics--are hinted at, but never rammed home. By the end we realise we've been watching a microcosm of human life, with all its humour and tragedy. For all the apparent narrowness of its canvas, A One and a Two makes most British and American films feel hopelessly parochial. The Best Director Prize at Cannes was rarely more richly deserved. On the DVD: A One and a Two comes to disc with a generous helping of extras. The original theatrical trailer, wordless and intriguing; numerous cast and crew biographies; a brief stills gallery; and, best of all, a full three-hour commentary track of Edward Yang in conversation with Tony Rayns, UK expert on Chinese-language cinema. Their discussion is relaxed and illuminating. The print, and the SR Dolby Digital sound, are clean and crisp, and we get the full 1.85:1 ratio of the original release. --Philip Kemp

Sequels might be the lifeblood of mainstream Hollywood film production but it took 30 years for The Odd Couple 2 to reunite Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and writer Neil Simon for a follow-up to their scintillating 1967 success. Now Felix (Lemmon) and Oscar (Matthau), once mismatched flatmates, are forced to renew their old friendship when their respective children get married. Cue all the ingredients for a disaster-riddled journey to California for the wedding: lost luggage, allergies, dangerously wanton women (and their husbands), illegal immigrants and repeat visits to the same police station. All the old irritations rise quickly to the surface, Simon's dialogue is as sharp as ever and the vocal sparring skills of these two magnificent comedy players are undiminished, though there's a certain poignancy in their physical frailty: "I'm too old to hit but I could spit you to death", threatens Matthau at one point. Crumpled and puffy, neither of them looks in great shape. But the film gives a neat symmetry to two of the finest cinematic careers. As Matthau says towards the end, it's "the biggest goddamndest déjà vu anyone's ever had". On the DVD: The Odd Couple 2 on disc has no extras apart from the original theatrical trailer. The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby Digital Surround soundtrack. It looks and sounds good. Alan Silvestri's score borrows the Neal Hefti theme from the 1967 original from time to time. --Piers Ford
"Gamer" is a high-concept action thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in massive multiplayer online games: people play people...for keeps.
This giant-man-eating-snake-in-the-jungle thriller definitely scores points as a guilty pleasure, especially with Jon Voight hamming it up as the monster-poacher. He makes life miserable for a team of documentary filmmakers on the Amazon river. Anaconda is one of those movies that exists for no other reason than to give computer animators a chance to strut their stuff with a new digital beastie, and they don't disappoint. It's a lot of fun to watch the mega-snake scarf down its victims and--in the case of Voight--regurgitate him right back up again, all covered in gooey digestive juices. You might wonder why Eric Stoltz, who plays Dr. Steven Cale, showed up for a role that requires him to be off-screen for most of the movie, but hey--when it comes to big snake movies, you might as well put your brain on hold and sitback for the slimy ride. --Jeff Shannon

Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) On a deserted highway, a school bus is carrying a basketball team and its cheerleaders back from a triumphant game.
