The names Audrey Hepburn and Holly Golightly have become synonymous since this dazzling romantic comedy was translated to the screen from Truman Capote's best-selling novella. Holly is a deliciously eccentric New York City playgirl determined to marry a Brazilian millionaire. George Peppard plays her nextdoor neighbour a writer who is 'sponsored' by wealthy Patricia Neal. Guessing who's the right man for Holly is easy. Seeing just how that romance blossoms is one of the enduring delights of this classic set to Henry Mancini's Oscar-winning score and the Oscar-winning Mancini/Johnny Mercer song 'Moon River'.
This DVD features some of the opera world's greatest artists on extracts from works by Verdi and Giordano performed at Italy's leading opera house Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The extracts are from: 1.Verdi's Ernani in an exceptionally strong production from 1982 featuring Placido Domingo Mirella Freni Renato Bruson and Nicolai Ghiaurov conducted by Riccardo Muti. 2.Giordano's Andrea Chenier in a 1985 production starring Jose Carreras Eva Marton and Piero Burchuladze conducted by Riccardo Chailly. 3.Verdi's Nabucco in a 1986 production featuring Renato Bruson Ghena Dimitrova and Paata Burchuladze conducted by Riccardo Muti. 4.Verdi's I Lombardi in a 1984 production with Jose Carreras Ghena Dimitrova and Silvano Carroli.
As part of the celebration of the Roman Catholic Church's Year of Jubilee in 2000, José Carreras performed the Concerto Natale ("Christmas Concert") in the ancient basilica of Saint Ambrose in Milan before a large audience of senior clergy. The concert itself is a mixture of the sacred and the pretty much profane, including a setting of "Panis Angelicus" by Bach as well as the better-known one by César Franck alongside "The Little Drummer Boy" and--among the encores--"White Christmas". Carreras brings to all of this material his fine emotional discrimination: the voice is not what it once was, but the retraining forced on Carreras by illness manifests itself primarily as a tact and humility that looks in every case for what is best in the music. Conductor Giménez provides good four-square accompaniment throughout and is admirable, without being flashy, in Handel's "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba". --Roz Kaveney
