  Pure. Popcorn. Entertainment. That's an exact classification of director Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The action is nonstop, with battles and explosions from start to finish. The camera (without any subtlety) exploits Megan Fox's hotness to the max. As if she weren't enough, a new sex kitten (Isabel Lucas) is thrown into the equation. Shia LaBeouf is as charismatic as ever, and fills the starring role with ease. And then there's the humour. Sam's parents (Kevin Dunn and Julie White) provided some semi-raunchy laugh-out-loud moments in the first movie, but now they take it to the next level. Sometimes it seems like they are trying a little too hard, but it is still hilarious. As far as the “plot” goes, the writers didn't waste much time--it's really just a context for the giant-robot death matches and dramatic slow-mo sequences. The movie kicks off two years later where the Autobots have formed an alliance with the U.S. government, creating an elite team led by Major Lennox (Josh Duhamel), in an effort to snuff out any remaining Decepticons that show up. The bad guys keep coming, and it turns out that a much more menacing force than Megatron is out there--and it is looking for something on Earth that is tied to the very origin of the Transformers race. Fans of the franchise will be delighted by the addition of many new robot characters (there are well over 40 in the sequel, versus only 13 in the first). The second Transformers has shaped up to be one of the worst reviewed and most successful movies of all time. This strange pairing is really just an indication that this movie has one purpose: to entertain. The creators didn't want to waste time bogging down the action and drama with substance--which was arguably a good decision. --Jordan Thompson

It quickly becomes apparent that Blizzard possesses all three magical reindeer gifts: the ability to fly the power to make herself invisible and the gift of empathic navigation - being able to see with her heart. Using her empathic ability Blizzard feels Katie's sadness and flies to Katie's home to investigate. Despite the rigid rules of the North Pole Blizzard helps Katie learn that the value of true friendships is that they never truly go away. However by breaking these rules Blizzard must face the possibility of banishment at the hands of Archimedes Santa's strict head elf. Only true friendship can save her now...

  Sleepy-eyed hip-hop luminary Snoop Dogg stars in Bones, an energetic horror film about a hustler who returns from the dead. Jimmy Bones used to rule his street, but now his body lies in the basement of a gothic abandoned house. When a troupe of young DJs and promoters decide to turn the house into a nightclub, dark forces are, unsurprisingly, unleashed. Bones has a cutting sense of humour, and Ernest Dickerson's direction snaps, crackles and pops. It's not exactly subtle--the opening scene launches into gore and special effects--but there is some evocative imagery, particularly a large black hell-hound that the club kids foolishly adopt as a pet. Snoop casts an effectively spectral aura and Pam Grier, as the hustler's psychically gifted former girlfriend, has her usual presence and energy.   At first, Best Laid Plans comes off like yet another all-flash-no-substance crime thriller but it's one of those rare films that end better than they start. Nick (Alessandro Nivola from Face/Off), broke and desperate to get out of his suffocating small town, agrees to take part in a drug heist. When his partners get caught, he has less than a week to come up with $15,000 or suffer the consequences. When his college buddy Brice (Josh Brolin--Flirting with Disaster) comes back to town, Nick and his girlfriend Lissa (Reese Witherspoon) hatch a plan to blackmail Brice out of a rare collectable. Of course, things go wrong--which is where things get entertaining. The plot could use a few more twists to really crackle but the surprises it does have work and the ending is both clever and affecting. Along the way, the best scene features a drug dealer who quotes economic theory from the bible of capitalism, The Wealth of Nations. In the past few years, Reese Witherspoon has turned in superb performances in such varied movies as Freeway, Pleasantville and especially Election; Best Laid Plans doesn't make much use of her talent but she's always watchable. --Bret Fetzer
