Lovers of weepies might overlook the plot weaknesses of Here on Earth in favour of the strong performances and the prospect of a good cry. Slumming among the locals of a small New York town, Kelley Morse (Chris Klein)--graduating senior at a posh prep school and all-around insufferable rich kid--engages the testosterone of one of the hicks (Josh Hartnett) when he flirts with the guy's girlfriend, Samantha (LeeLee Sobieski). A car chase ensues, resulting in Samantha's family's diner getting blown up, which in turn lands the boys in hot water with the law. The upshot is the snotty rich kid is sentenced to help the locals rebuild the diner. A romance develops between Kelley and Samantha, apparently because they like a particular Robert Frost poem. So now they're deep, see. But then their love is tested when Samantha contracts Ali McGraw disease. You know, that's the sudden disease Ali McGraw gets in Love Story--really an excuse to emphasise the strength of the characters' love. You don't know what you got till it's gone, right? This film would be pretty bad if the performances weren't so engaging, especially LeeLee Sobieski's, who seems to be channelling Helen Hunt in this movie. However, Chris Klein never makes us believe for an instant that his arrogant character could make the changes he does, or that his and Sobieski's characters could ever really get together. The script is too thin to support any motivations and the film falls into formulaic weepy territory unlikely to appeal to teen tear ducts. --Jim Gay

Continuing to combine visuals from imaginative digital animators with a soundtrack by electronic dance music's leading artists and DJs the X-Mix series had by the mid-90s become continental clubland's visual materials of choice. As the series matured the animations began moving from abstraction into stand-alone virtual landscapes. Beyond The Heavens to a mix of classic groovy techno sculpted by the UK's Dave Angel had a futuristic almost sinister atmosphere. It includes crucial tunes by Kenny Larkin Sun Electric Josh Wink Ian Pooley and Dave Angel himself. Digital deserts and industries of the imagination were explored on Wildstyle where the sounds were provided by Munich's DJ Hell - a decade of underground techno and house fashioned into one long mix and including crucial tracks such as Bernard Badie's Can You Feel It Bobby Konder's Let There be House and Phortune's Can You Feel The Bass. The Electric Storm supplied further flights of computer-animated fancy - digital worlds orchestrated to a long morphing mix from The Shamen's Mr C. Both a voyage into virtuality and a journey into the spirit of the beat. 'It's about human evolution' said Mr C.

Flatt & Scruggs are one of the two or three most respected and most popular bluegrass bands of all time. Along with Bill Monroe they propelled this great style into a widely successful and artistically praised musical format. They left a legacy of wonderful recordings made in the 1950s and 1960s on both Columbia and Mercury and were star attractions on the Grand Ole Opry for many years. Earl Scruggs together with Bill Monroe helped create the whole style of bluegrass. His highly influential new banjo style was the single most important factor in defining bluegrass and almost all other banjo players immediately jumped on his bandwagon as did almost all new players for the next 50 years! The performances in these DVDs showcase Flatt & Scruggs in their prime with their group the Foggy Mountain Boys playing many of their most famous songs as well as many other bluegrass classics.
