That's how Andie (Meredith Monroe) sums up the topsy-turvy beginning to the third season of Dawson's Creek, in which nothing seems to be as it should and the series takes a major turn. It's junior year at Capeside High, and Jack (Kerr Smith), the town's resident gay teen, is indeed on the football team, and Jen (Michelle Williams) finds herself the object of unexpected and unwelcome popularity among her fellow students, especially the freshman quarterback (Michael Pitt). Pacey (Joshua Jackson) finds that his relationship with Andie can't be restored, and Dawson (James Van Der Beek) and Joey (Katie Holmes), after the events of last year, both think it's for the best that they're no longer together--they just never think it at the same time. Significant events include the friends starting to date outside their circle, Dawson's giving up some of his aspirations, a ! crisis for the school's new principal, a college tour, and the openings of the Potter Bed & Breakfast and Leery Fresh Fish. But the Dawson-Joey relationship is still the heart of the Creek, and it comes to a head in one of the series' most memorable episodes, "The Longest Day," and then the season finale. Even in its first season without series creator Kevin Williamson, Dawson's Creek still had plenty of punch. On the DVDs, executive producer Paul Stupin does his usual commentary track for two episodes, and he's joined by Kerr Smith. They discuss the series itself, Smith's character, and Smith's subsequent career more than the events of the episodes. The second-season DVD set disappointed many fans by replacing a large portion of the music, and that trend continues in the third season, most surprisingly in the loss of Paula Cole's theme song. Instead, the opening credits feature Jann Arden's "Run Like Mad," which was used briefly in the international broadcast. Stupin explains the switch as an attempt to do something different and creative, but then admits there was also "a bit of an economic reality." Fortunately, the DVDs do have John Lennon's "Imagine" and Mary Beth Maziarz's "Daydream Believers"--songs that in dramatic context simply could not have been replaced--and it could be argued that a veteran viewer might skip the opening credits anyway. Still, for many fans, the music made Dawson's Creek what it was, and without all of it--especially the theme song--the DVDs seem like a compromise rather than a permanent keepsake. --David Horiuchi

In 'Blair Witch' (2016), college student James Donahue (James Allen McCune), accompanied by a group of friends, ventures into Maryland's Black Hills Forest in search of his missing sister who disappeared 20 years earlier while searching for evidence of the Blair Witch. After an uneventful hike deep into the woods, the group begin to feel a menacing presence in their camp as the night draws on. When a number of mysterious figures then appear in the trees around the camp, the panicked group begin to realise that the legend is real and more sinister than they could have imagined...

  Trigger Happy TV 3 is another compilation from the cult late night Channel 4 comedy that turbo-charged the old Candid Camera format with a cool rock soundtrack for the MTV generation. While the show itself could become repetitive, the 42 minutes of highlights distilled into the main feature here are frequently hilarious. See public prankster Dom Joly wrestle a giant badger in the woods, enjoy the office populated entirely by people dressed as bears and collapse with laugher at the most surreal estate agent scenario in the world. From a terribly insecure policeman to the street guide who doesn't know the location of anything, Joly's nerve at pulling off some of these gags is breathtaking. The supporting feature is a half-hour spoof biography of Joly made to introduce Trigger Happy TV to American audiences. Deadpan in the extreme, it sends up the fly-on-the-wall genre and celebrity interview with uncomfortably accurate wit. That's not the end, because the presentation makes the line between programme and extras largely irrelevant, so read on to see what else is... On the DVD: Trigger Happy TV 3 can simply be played straight through so that everything on the disc makes a 90-minute pseudo feature, or individual sections can be selected as extras. There are 14 mostly worthwhile unseen clips, three "Bad Rabbit Jokes" (and they are bad), the three "Worst Ideas Ever" (they are), "Brushes with the Law" (which was bound to happen with such stunts as White Van Man's road rage), and four hugely entertaining previously unseen Celebrity Interviews with Hanif Kureishi, Bret Easton Ellis, Uri Geller and Alan Titchmarsh. The commentary track by Joly and Sam Cadman rambles with entertaining irrelevance from a deaf George Martin producing their recording at Studio 2, Abbey Road, to rather more believable recollections of being arrested in Belgium. --Gary S Dalkin

Its depiction of a well-meaning Democrat administration has warmed the hearts of countless Americans. However, The West Wing is more than mere feel-good viewing for sentimental patriots. It is among the best-written, sharpest, funny and moving American TV series of all time. In its first series, The West Wing established the cast of characters who comprise the White House staff. There's Chief of Staff Leo McGarry (John Spencer), a recovering alcoholic whose efforts to be the cornerstone of the administration contribute to the break-up of his marriage. CJ (Alison Janney) is the formidable Press Spokeswoman embroiled in a tentative on-off relationship with Timothy (Thirtysomething) Busfield's reporter. Brilliant but grumpy communications deputy Toby Ziegler, Rob Lowe's brilliant but faintly nerdy Sam Seaborn and brilliant but smart-alecky Josh Lyman make up the rest of the inner circle. Initially, the series' creators had intended to keep the President off-screen. Wisely, however, they went with Martin Sheen's Jed Bartlet, whose eccentric volatility, caution, humour and strength in a crisis make for such an impressively plausible fictional President that polls once expressed a preference for Bartlet over the genuine incumbent. The issues broached in the first series have striking, often prescient contemporary relevance. We see the President having to be talked down from a "disproportionate response" when terrorists shoot down a plane carrying his personal doctor, or acting as broker in a dangerous stand-off between India and Pakistan. Gun control laws, gays in the military, Fundamentalist pressure groups are all addressed--the latter in a most satisfying manner ("Get your fat asses out of the White House!")--while the episode "Take This Sabbath Day" is a superb dramatic meditation on Capital punishment. Handled incorrectly, The West Wing could have been turgid, didactic propaganda for The American Way. However, the writers are careful to show that, decent as this administration is, its achievements, though hard-won, are minimal. Moreover, the brisk, staccato-like, almost musical exchanges of dialogue, between Josh and his PA Donna, for instance, as they pace purposefully up and down the corridors are the show's abiding joy. This is wonderful and addictive viewing.--David Stubbs

  Gossip is one of a spate of movies that owe a lot to Cruel Intentions. This time it's rich kids in college, but other than that Gossip stays well within the beautiful-young-people-doing-awful-things-to-each other formula. Lena Heady plays Jones, obviously the Smart Girl because she is briefly seen wearing glasses. Jones hangs out with Arty Guy Travis and Handsome Rich Guy Derrick, who finances their adventures and has a little bit of a lying habit. The three are all in the same journalism class (acidic monologist Eric Bogosian plays the acidic professor) and decide to start and track a rumour for their term papers. They pick rich and beautiful couple Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) as the focus of the rumour, and before you know it their juicy story starts spinning out of control into ugly territory and a truly ludicrous climax. There are attempts at making sledgehammer points about the slippery task of finding Truth, but mostly Gossip is about the guilty pleasure of watching pretty young actors be mean to each other.
