  • Reversal Of Fortune [1991]Reversal Of Fortune | DVD | (04/08/2003) from £6.22   |  Saving you £6.77 (108.84%)   |  RRP £12.99

Reversal of Fortune focuses on one of the most intriguing criminal trials of the 1980s, that of Claus von Bülow, who was accused of sending his rich wife Sunny into a permanent coma with an overdose of insulin. Director Barbet Schroeder, working from Nicholas Kazan's evocative, darkly humorous script, turns the story into both a look at the lives of rich folks with too much time on their hands and a whodunit, as lawyer Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver) prepares to defend von Bülow (Jeremy Irons) in court. Irons won an Oscar for his spooky, knowing performance, which hints at depths of degeneracy without ever putting a dent in a veneer of bored elegance. The contrast between the hard-charging Dershowitz and his eager-beaver Harvard law students and the eternally languid von Bülow adds unexpected humour. --Marshall Fine

  • Born Yesterday [1950]Born Yesterday | DVD | (05/08/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Born Yesterday was the box-office comedy hit of 1950 and won a Best Actress Oscar for the exceptional Judy Holliday, recreating her long-running Broadway triumph as Billie Dawn, the quintessential dumb blonde who finally gets herself some smarts. The film resonates with the sophisticated sparring in Garson Kanin's script and there are tightly controlled performances from William Holden as the cynical journalist hired to polish Billie up for Washington society and Broderick Crawford as Harry Brock, her rough, crooked and ambitious boyfriend. But Born Yesterday is Holliday's picture, as she runs the gamut from brassy insouciance to tentative, vulnerable enlightenment. She hasn't thought of her estranged father in five years: "It's nothing against him. I haven't thought of anything in five years." Her gradual awakening to the realisation that she is a stooge for Brock's corrupt business deals, and the way she sheds her chorus girl's intellect in the face of growing political awareness, are brilliantly traced. Holliday's dead-pan delivery makes the pathos of her self-discovery both hilarious and deeply touching; it's the hallmark of a comic genius, which makes the sparseness of her subsequent film appearances all the more regrettable. On the DVD: Born Yesterday is presented in full screen (1.33:1) ratio. Like the mono soundtrack, the black and white picture quality has triumphantly survived its more than half century. Extras include a gallery of vintage advertisements and an original theatrical trailer, plus filmographies and welcome, comprehensive booklet notes. --Piers Ford

  • Mohabbatein [2000]Mohabbatein | DVD | (21/04/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £21.99

Mohabbatein ("Love Stories") is, as the title suggests, thoroughly concerned with love and romance; it's a hugely popular Bollywood blockbuster about three young men at an exclusive boarding school who fall in love with three local young women. Opposition comes from the head of the school (Amitabh Bachan) and support from the violin teacher, who introduces an element of Dead Poets Society into a story which references both Grease (1978) and West Side Story (1961). Actually this is Aditya Chopra's follow-up to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which also starred Shahrukh Khan. The rest of the featured players are almost all new, and inject a vitality into every scene so that even at three-and-a-half hours Mohabbatein rarely drags. The soundtrack sweeps all before it in the seven big production numbers, which add a Western pop-video gloss to the complex, exhilarating musical arrangements. Likewise the choreography fuses traditional Indian elements with contemporary Western dance, and while the men are handsome and charming, the girls are stunningly beautiful, breathtakingly sensual, and scantily clad in a thoroughly modern fashion. Mohabbatein is a colourful, humorous though haunting romantic drama, which even those unfamiliar with Indian cinema should find highly enjoyable. On the DVD: The feature is in Hindi with subtitle options for English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Malay. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is often atmospheric, though only really comes into its own in the dynamic musical numbers. The anamorphically enhanced presentation of the original 2.35:1 cinema image is NTSC; while colours are excellent and the detail level well above VHS there is a slight lack of sharpness compared to the best PAL transfers. The second disc contains 64 minutes of English language interviews, 11 TV trailers and an anamorphic theatrical trailer, a scored stills gallery, 18 minutes of deleted scenes, including one musical number, with optional English language director's commentary, plus a 44-minute "making-of" documentary. The attractive packaging puts all but the most lavish US releases to shame. --Gary S Dalkin
