Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel s publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the killer virus biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realising that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus codenamed Andromeda before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise s suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative. • Avatar / Titanic Double Pack (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) [1997]Avatar / Titanic Double Pack (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (17/06/2013) from £17.55   |  Saving you £22.44 (127.86%)   |  RRP £39.99

AvatarThe widely-acclaimed film that ushered in a new generation of 3D filmmaking, it's unsurprising that, come its Blu-ray release, Avatar remains one of the finest proponents of the technology. Whilst the 3D obviously doesn't have quite the impact it had on a massive cinema screen, it nonetheless still works strikingly well on Blu-ray. It's surprising, considering the number of films that have attempted to surpass Avatar's visual feats since it was released just how few have come close. Such is the standard of director James Cameron's visual work. Parts remain as jaw-dropping as they always were. The film itself smashed records on its release, and it's easy to see why. It's perhaps not the masterpiece it was initially proclaimed at, but this is intense, exhilarating blockbuster entertainment nonetheless. Ambitious, too. It's hard to think of too many other films that have so convincingly put across a fictional alien world as Avatar manages, and particularly in the intense final half hour, it looks simply glorious. James Cameron is a notorious perfectionaist too when it comes to the presentation of his work, and this disc release is a real testament to that. The Blu-ray presentation is exquisite, and Avatar stands up as a reference disc. Not just on the visual side, either. The audio quality the Blu-ray offers is quite brilliant. It all adds up to a strong film, on one of the best discs on the market for a home cinema workout. --Jon Foster TitanicWith eleven Oscars on its mantelpiece, star-making turns from Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, and a soundtrack that continues to sell, Titanic's place in movie history has long since been assured. However, director James Cameron, one of the biggest advocates of 3D technology, invested a heavy amount of time, resources and hard cash in adapting his hugely popular film. And this 3D release is the end result. The film itself needs little introduction. Epic in ambition and scale, Titanic tells the story of the sole voyage of the infamous ship, focusing its story on a young couple from different walks of life. It's a feature whose merits have been vigorously debated since its release, but the consensus remains hugely positive. The spectacle alone, especially in this crystal-clear, effective 3D Blu-ray transfer, is something to behold. But there's both a compelling drama and a modern day disaster movie classic also mixed in. The 3D Blu-ray Titanic is an example of how to present a film superbly well. --Jon Foster

  • Holiday In The Sun [2001]Holiday In The Sun | DVD | (17/02/2003) from £19.89   |  Saving you £-5.90 (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

In Holiday in the Sun, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (playing twins Alex and Madison) are whisked away to the Bahamas in a private jet by their pilot dad, though they are initially disappointed to be missing their class trip to Hawaii (just what high school do these girls attend?). But the 15-year-olds recover upon meeting up with their mum on the sunny tarmac, checking into their own suite at the Atlantis resort, and getting acquainted with some cute boys on the island. Parents may see this 88-minute movie as one long advertisement for the Paradise Island resort, with the constant mentioning of its name and endless showcasing of its attractions. But kids, particularly girls ages 7 to 12, will get a kick out of Alex's rivalry with the rich superwitch Brianna for marine worker Jordan's affections. Then there's the updated Cyrano storyline, with Dad's business partner's son Griffen coaching dim-but-likable Scott on how to win over Madison. Throw in an antiquities smuggling subplot, some dolphin hugging, horseback riding, and wave running and you've got some fairly innocent entertainment augmented with frothy tunes by teen group up-and-comers Play, Empty Trash (featuring vocals by the twins), The American Girls, and Noogie. --Kimberly Heinrichs, Amazon.com
