Kermit's Swamp Years is the full-length version of a one-off American cable television feature that sets out to show us the formative years of the future host of The Muppet Show. Its focus is a childhood adventure involving Kermit and his two best friends: a somewhat delinquent frog called Croaker, and a tremulous toad named Goggles. Though the film was, obviously, made some years after the death of Kermit's creator, Jim Henson, the wit, spirit and joy that informed Sesame Street and The Muppet Show are all discernible here. Henson's resounding genius was to understand that children can tell when they are being treated like idiots, and that they don't much care for it, which is why The Muppet Show is still enjoyed by adults who grew up with the programme, and why none of those adults will object to sitting through Kermit's Swamp Years with their children. On the DVD: Kermit's Swamp Years is presented anamorphically in 1.78:1 widescreen. Extras include behind-the-scenes footage, which reinforces the fact that the human magic necessary to animate the muppet characters is far more interesting and impressive than any amount of the computer wizardry now favoured by most similar films. There are also some quite well-done muppet pastiches of the common DVD special features, interviews with, and commentary from, the stars, and a collection of bloopers and out-takes. --Andrew Mueller

Edna (Cristina Galbo) and George (Ray Lovelock) are unlikey travelling companions - they met en-route when she backed her car into his motorbike and subsequently offered him a lift to his destination. Stopping over near Manchester Galbo is attacked by a man that the locals say has been dead for days. Edna's sister Katie (Jeannine Mestre) is a prostitute addicted to heroin and when her husband is brutally murdered Katie is the chief suspect according to bitter local inspector (Arthur Kennedy). But Edna and George soon realise that inhabitants are being murdered as meals for the re-animated corpses of the morgue: the new pesticides used in the area are bringing the dead back to life and for sustenance they need human flesh. The Living Dead is widely recognised by horror fans as one of the best zombie movies ever made and the unlikely setting of pretty English countryside makes the flesh-tearing bone crunching zombies all the more shocking.

For Creepshow 2, the quickie 1987 sequel to the Stephen King-scripted/George Romero-directed 1982 original, Romero shifted jobs to become the screenwriter, earning King (who also has a goony cameo as a trucker) a "based on stories by" credit. Cinematographer Michael Gornick stepped up to make an uninspiring directorial debut, turning out a conventional TV-look picture unlike the sometimes striking Creepshow. A frame story mixes live action and cartoon as a small boy leafs through the latest issue of his favourite horror comic while plotting revenge against neighbourhood bullies. A pun-dropping host called the Creep (played by Tom Savini when not a cartoon) introduces three anecdotes. In "Old Chief Wooden Head", George Kennedy and Dorothy Lamour are kindly Western shopkeepers killed by tearaways and avenged by the wooden Indian which stands outside the place. In "The Raft", four obnoxious teens are terrorised on a lake by a hungry slime-monster. And in "The Hitch-Hiker", hit-and-run driver Lois Chiles is haunted by her squashed victim, who keeps reappearing in a progressively battered forms. Though King and Romero deliver a good mix of cynical and melodramatic dialogue, the stories are disappointingly thin and predictable, with especially weak punch-lines. Of the performers, only Chiles really works up the hysterical attack needed to play a comic book character. On the DVD: just a trailer. The picture is a fullscreen print that cuts off crucial details in the comic book panels. --Kim Newman

With the advent of the talkies, The Marx Brothers - Chico, Groucho, Harpo and Zeppo - signed to Paramount Pictures and brought their stage act to cinema audience. They made five films in five years, all of which have become cornerstones of American comedy. In their last film for Paramount the four brothers gave us what many regard to be one of the greatest comedies of all time, Duck Soup. Directed by one of the most exceptional of all Hollywood comedy directors, Leo McCarey, Duck Soup sees the Marx clan spinning a satirical tale of war and war-makers as Groucho's Rufus Firefly declares war on the neighbouring state of Sylvania. The Paramount era represents the Marx Brothers at their absolute finest, retaining all of the energy and controlled chaos of their stage shows.
