Sleepers | DVD | (14/03/2016)
from £20.23

| RRP The first thing you need to know about Sleepers is that it's based on a novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra that was allegedly based on a true story. The movie repeats this bogus claim, which was attacked and determined by a wide majority to be misleading. Knowing this, Sleepers becomes problematic because it's too neat, too clean, too manipulative in terms of legal justice and dramatic impact to be truly convincing. And yet, with its stellar cast directed by Barry Levinson, it succeeds as gripping entertainment, and its tale of complex morality--despite a dubious emphasis on homophobic revenge--is sufficiently provocative. It's about four boys in New York's Hell's Kitchen district who are sent to reform school, where they must endure routine sexual assaults by the sadistic guards. Years after their release, the opportunity for revenge proves irresistible for two of the young men, who must then rely on the other pair of friends (Brad Pitt, Jason Patric), a loyal priest (Robert De Niro), and a shabby lawyer (Dustin Hoffman) to defend them in court. Despite the compelling ambiguities of the story, there's never any doubt about how we're supposed to feel, and the screenplay glosses over the story's most difficult moral dilemmas. At its best, Sleepers grabs your attention and pulls you into its intense story of friendship and the price of loyalty under extreme conditions. The movie's New York settings are vividly authentic, and Minnie Driver makes a strong impression as a long-time friend of the loyal group of guys. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Improve Your Coarse Fishing | DVD | (24/05/2010)

| RRP The principal with the Improve Your Coarse Fishing series is to do what the magazine does - concentrating on UK pleasure fishing on the kind of waters anyone can fish and techniques that anyone can use with a bit of application. In presenter Kev Green's words: The series is all about helping people catch more fish and bigger fish on venues they can identify with. We are targeting many different species in many differ ways. We cover carp but the series is by no means all about carp fishing. It's about enjoying the pleasure fishing that the UK has to offer and learning things that will improve your own fishing. Fishing for bream (Bluebell Lakes Northamptonshire) tench and perch (River Nene) are covered as Kevin who is editor of Improve Your Coarse Fishing magazine goes fishing with Angling Times' editor Richard Lee. Don't miss Kevin's visit to Docklow Pools in Herefordshire to show the quality of silver fish sport available on the country's commercial fisheries as he puts his pole to good use to for a superb bag of roach. A brilliant episode sees Kevin joining carp man Steve Broad in a head-to-head at a typical commercial carp pool with Steve using Method tactics for big carp and Kevin giving a masterclass in the use of market floats and spods to target carp in numbers. It's not all about stillwaters though with Kevin 'hooking up' with Bob Robberts for some real Mr. Crabtree style fishing stalking chub and barbel on a picture postcard tributary of the River Trent and there's some amazing underwater footage of barbel and chub feeding to enjoy. Also look out for Kevin teaming up with former Wasps rugby player Jonathan Watt at Hartleylands Farm in Kent. Jonathan shows how to fish (paste) on the bottom for carp with Kevin enjoying plenty of action up in the water with a splasher waggler and big pellet waggler. And Kevin's back with the nation's favourite fish when he visits Lemington Lakes in the Cotswold to target big tench in the margins .........and he bags a personal best on the pole for good measure!

Frost/Nixon | DVD | (14/03/2016)
from £4.91
| Saving you £10.08 (205.30%)
| RRP Its not always that a stage play translates particularly well to the medium of movies. But for anyone considering such a challenge in the future, Frost/Nixon is surely a fine template to follow. In the capable hands of director Ron Howard, the extraordinary story of how a then-fairly low profile television interviewer managed to bring the disgraced former President of the United States to account is, at best, absolutely riveting.Much of the reason for this is the two leading performances, which are both absolutely exception. The awards attention for Frost/Nixon has been directed towards Frank Langella, and truly hes an actor long overdue some recognition. Here, as ex-President Nixon, hes flat-out brilliant: a complex, intriguing character portrayed with real measure and expertise. Its unfair, though, that Michael Sheen has been overlooked by some. Fresh from portraying Tony Blair in The Queen, Sheen is once more brilliant here, injecting Frost with an erratic, on-the-edge fallibility that sets up the films final act extremely well. Now you can argue, with some right, that Frost/Nixon flattens out some of the facts to its own liking, and certainly the portrayal of David Frost doesnt seem to do the man too many favours. But when it gets to the interviews themselves, its electric, and proof that you dont need a bunch of effects and flashy gimmicks to keep you on the edge of your seat. Ron Howard has done this to us before with a true story, in the shape of Apollo 13, and here again, even though we know the ending, the journey there is quite brilliant. You really can make compelling drama with just two people sat in a chair --Simon Brew Stills from Frost/Nixon Michael Sheen stars as journalist David Frost Kevin Bacon stars as Richard Nixon's aide Jack Brennan Michael Sheen and Rebecca Hall Frank Langella works with director Ron Howard A scene in which David Frost visits Richard Nixons home The superb supporting cast including Sam Rockwell, Oliver Platt and Matthew Macfadyen
