  • Trainspotting: The Definitive Edition [DTS] [1996]Trainspotting: The Definitive Edition | DVD | (16/06/2003) from £8.61   |  Saving you £14.37 (255.69%)   |  RRP £19.99

The film that effectively launched the star careers of Robert Carlyle, Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller, Trainspotting is a hard, barbed picaresque, culled from the bestseller by Irvine Welsh and thrown down against the heroin hinterlands of Edinburgh. Directed with abandon by Danny Boyle, it conspires to be at once a hip youth flick and a grim cautionary fable. McGregor, Lee Miller and Ewen Bremner play a slouching trio of Scottish junkies, Carlyle their narcotic-eschewing but hard-drinking and generally psychotic mate Begbie. In Boyle's hands, their lives unfold in a rush of euphoric highs, blow-out overdoses and agonising withdrawals (all cued to a vogueish pop soundtrack). Throughout it all, John Hodge's screenplay strikes a delicate balance between acknowledging the inherent pleasures of drug use and spotlighting its eventual consequences. In Trainspotting's world view, it all comes down to a choice between the dangerous Day-Glo highs of the addict and the grey, grinding consumerism of the everyday Joe. "Choose life", quips the film's narrator (McGregor) in a monologue that was to become a mantra. "Choose a job, choose a starter home... But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?" Ultimately, Trainspotting's wised-up, dead-beat inhabitants reject mainstream society in favour of a headlong rush to destruction. It makes for an exhilarating, energised and frequently terrifying trip that blazes with more energy and passion than a thousand more ostensibly life-embracing movies. --Xan Brooks

  • Thin Blue Line, The - The Complete Thin Blue Line [1995]Thin Blue Line, The - The Complete Thin Blue Line | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £17.96   |  Saving you £-7.97 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Set in a fictitious suburb rather like, say, Pinner (only more so), The Thin Blue Line is the wickedly funny story of a rather down-at-heel police station headed by Inspector Raymond Fowler (Rowan Atkinson), a pompous, repressed but well-intentioned anachronism who wants to do the right thing but who is constantly hampered by his own shortcomings, not to mention his blundering CID colleagues. Atkinson expertly balances his character's inflated sense of self-importance with the insight born of old-school police values, for which his galumphing, shiny-suited CID counterpart, DI Grim (David Haig) has no time at all. Strongest among the supporting cast is Sgt Pauline Dawkins (Serena Evans), who also happens to be Fowler's live-in lover--a moral dilemma that his traditional values won't allow him to resolve. He salves his conscience by avoiding sex with her whenever possible, an amusing subplot enhanced by Evans's brilliant performance--she positively vibrates with contained, ladylike lust in a manner only equalled by Penelope Keith in the classic sitcom To the Manor Born. Scripted by Ben Elton, this series manages to satirise provincialism, institutionalised pig-headedness and dated moral values in one fell swoop, while also being chock-full of quick-fire, Blackadder-esque dialogue. --Roger Thomas

  • Dave [1993]Dave | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

A heart-warming story of mistaken identity and idealism, director Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) takes on the political establishment in this fresh, funny comedy. Kevin Kline (Sophie's Choice, A Fish Called Wanda) plays Dave Kovic, a sweet man with a big heart running an employment agency. Dave happens to be a dead ringer for the current president of the United States and he hires himself out as an impersonator for parties and mall openings. When the real president has a stroke while in bed with an aide, his ambitious chief of staff (Frank Langella) decides to hold onto the White House by appealing to Dave's sense of patriotism and having him pose as the president. Soon, however, Dave is running the country in a way contrary to what the chief of staff would like, even as he finds himself falling in love with the unsuspecting first lady (Sigourney Weaver). The movie's unbridled optimism is its best asset and it makes this a pleasant comedy worth seeing. --Robert Lane

  • Kojak - The Complete Series (30 DVD Box Set)Kojak - The Complete Series (30 DVD Box Set) | DVD | (17/11/2014) from £45.55   |  Saving you £74.44 (163.42%)   |  RRP £119.99

On the timeline of successful TV cop dramas, Kojak offered bold authenticity and paved the way for NYPD Blue. As immortalised by Telly Savalas, veteran detective Theo Kojak was introduced in the 1973 TV movie The Marcus-Nelson Murders, a ratings hit that encouraged CBS and writer-producer Abby Mann to create a trend-setting series (based on a book by Selwyn Raab) that premiered on October 24 of that year. The Greek, bald-headed, snappily attired Kojak brought no-nonsense bravado to homicide cases in South Manhattan--a setting that lent a gritty, urban edge to intelligent plots that won the respect of real cops with an emphasis on diligent police work instead of overblown action and phony glamour. While working cases with his captain Frank McNeil (Dan Frazer) and closest colleagues Crocker (Kevin Dobson) and Stavros (played by Savalas's brother George, credited as Demosthenes for the first two seasons), Kojak had a knack for bending the rules (but never breaking them) if he knew it would solve a crime. Kojak came at a perfect time for Savalas and cop dramas in general. The actor's career was slumping in the early '70s (he'd just appeared in the Italian horror film Lisa and the Devil), and he quickly put his personal stamp on the role with street-wise sarcasm and trademark lollipops (a perfect prop that Savalas adopted to quit smoking). Consistently well-written, the series was realistically rooted in a broad spectrum of New York City crime. These qualities attracted plenty of fresh and established talent, including guest appearances by Harvey Keitel, James Woods, Richard Jordan, Hector Elizondo, John Ritter (in one of his first TV roles), Paul Michael Glaser, Dabney Coleman, Tina Louise, and a host of familiar TV veterans. For the debut season, Savalas won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Kojak ran for five well-rated seasons, followed by several TV-movie revivals in 1985, 1989, and 1990. The enduring popularity of Kojak was further proven when the show was revived yet again in March of 2005, with Ving Rhames in the title role And now, it's an open and shut case for this slick, well plotted, entertaining series, with all 118 newly remastered episodes, from all 5 seasons, available together for the very first time in this 30 disc box set

  • Margin Call [DVD]Margin Call | DVD | (18/01/2016) from £6.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Evolving over 36 hours in a troubled New York trading firm, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call--the true-ish story of the origins of the 2008 financial crisis--ranks alongside Wall Street, American Psycho and Glengarry Glen Ross in Hollywood’s long-standing fascination with the corrupting logic of late capitalism. The film’s opening round of lay-offs, one of several, includes that of a risk analyst (Stanley Tucci) who has secretly uncovered the runaway corrosive effects of the firm's big success story (and the bête noire of recent economic history): hyper-leveraged securities backed by sub-prime lending. Sensing meltdown, his protégé (Zachary Quinto) sends a warning signal up the corporate ladder--an overnight crisis meeting is convened; a drastic plan is forged--and the firm resolves to dump the bad schemes at the cost of projected global recession. The rest, we know, is history. Like Charles Ferguson's 2010 documentary Inside Job, Margin Call is tuned in to our suspicions of post-Keynesian economics, imagining high finance as an alchemy of unreal quantities from which huge profits can be netted. But if nobody, even academia, comes out of Inside Job intact, Margin Call presents a range of ethical positions: Kevin Spacey is a believably weary sales manager for whom Wall Street status is a gilded cage, while Simon Baker and Demi Moore are superb as unreflecting high-rollers, frosted over with greed and cynicism. Neither extremes are as interesting as Paul Bettany's pragmatic rank-and-file trader with a talent for corporate survival--and Jeremy Irons’ towering performance as CEO John Tuld (not to be confused with former CEO of Lehman Brothers Richard Fuld, obviously) is the most primal embodiment of capitalism since Daniel Day-Lewis prospected for oil in There Will Be Blood. His verdict sounds depressingly like authentic Wall Street cant: financial crises and the misery they inflict are a necessary part of the economic cycle. --Leo Batchelor
