  • Last Hero In China [1993]Last Hero In China | DVD | (02/06/2000) from £10.98   |  Saving you £-3.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

In Last Hero in China, Jet Li reprises the role of Wong Fei-hung, a legendary figure in China. Both a doctor and a teacher of martial arts, Wong has just moved his school in Canton, only to discover that the neighbouring house is a brothel. Though Wong's students are delighted and the earnest brothel master only wants to study with him, Wong feels he has lost face. But this becomes the least of his troubles: soon he's fighting a corrupt police chief, a temple of slave-trading monks and a deafness-causing medicine sold to children--and that's just in the first hour. Last Hero in China is a grand melodrama, featuring exaggerated heroes and villains, goofy humour and hyperbolic kung fu action. The plot takes some hard-to-follow turns, but the action is so non-stop it hardly matters. The lion vs centipede dance/fight has to be seen to be believed, to say nothing of the priest with a floating lotus chariot and a flying claw. Jet Li is in fine form, Gordon Liu (as the venal top cop) is maniacal and despicable, and the lovely Cheung Man plays an expert martial artist looking for her kidnapped sister. The character of Wong Fei-hung also appears in the Once Upon a Time in China series (where he was first played by Li) and in Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movies. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

  • The Montreux Dream And BB King Workshop [1999]The Montreux Dream And BB King Workshop | DVD | (16/07/2001) from £14.49   |  Saving you £-1.50 (-11.50%)   |  RRP £12.99

The Montreux Jazz Festival, the subject of the inspirational 1999 documentary The Montreux Dream, first took place in 1967. Since then, it has become a world-famous event, bringing together the finest musicians and singers in an annual celebration which transcends stuffy musical barriers. The force behind Montreux is its founder Claude Nobs and the documentary is as much a tribute to his generous passion for music (jazz and blues in particular) as it is to the artists past and present who have taken part over the years. Archive footage of Aretha Franklin at the piano (and at her vocal peak), blues singer and guitarist BB King, Miles Davis, the obviously thrilled British soul singer Beverley Knight and REM, among many others, contribute to a riveting and moving story. Director Christopher Swann skilfully uses performance clips to link interviews with many of these stars and anecdotes from Nobs as he reveals what an important historical archive the Festival has generated, and how he has managed to persuade so many stars to give their services for often relatively modest fees. Exhilarating stuff. On the DVD: Technically it might count as an extra, but the BB King Montreux Workshop 1999 commands equal billing with the main documentary. King's modest and engaging personality, the way he talks humbly about "rubbing shoulders with all these great people" and above all his eloquent, accessible dissection of the blues make this an invaluable 50 minutes for anyone who gives a fig for fine musicianship. The DVD cover claims that the main documentary is in 16:9 full-frame format, but it appears to be in 4:3 letterbox. This is fine, serving the sweeping vistas of Montreux and the modern performance footage well. The Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo sound quality is decent, but improves if you have a surround facility. Web links take you to the main Montreux Festival site and a site dedicated to BB King. --Piers Ford

Tim Allen makes an impressive screen debut in Disney's well-written holiday film, The Santa Clause. Divorced toy company executive Scott Calvin is pleased to have his son Charlie for Christmas, though the boy himself isn't happy about it. But when Santa Claus accidentally topples off the roof of the house and falls with a thud in the snow, Scott finds himself taking the merry old elf's place and earning new respect in his son's eyes. When the night ends, the reindeer take them to the North Pole, and Scott discovers that by donning the fabled red suit, he's inadvertently agreed to become the next Santa Claus. The next morning he wakes up in his own bed and thinks it's all a dream--but Charlie remembers it with crystal clarity. Scott now has to deal with his suspicious ex-wife (Wendy Crewson) and her psychiatrist boyfriend (Judge Reinhold), who both think he's playing tricks with Charlie's mind, and also with his own out-of-control body, which is putting on weight and growing a prodigious beard. The Santa Clause probably won't supplant It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street as anyone's favourite Christmas film, but it's an enjoyable, straightforward family film, anchored by the affable charisma of Allen. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Titles Comprise: Friday the 13th: Camp Crystal Lake has a bad history. A history drenched in blood. For over 20 years no-one has disturbed its deathly silence... until now. Often imitated but never equalled Friday The 13th is a relentless exercise in sustained terror. Unlike the luckless teenagers who go to Camp Crystal Lake it will live forever as the most shocking film of its kind. The Exorcist: The belief in evil - and that evil can be cast out. From these two strands of faith author William Peter Blatty and director William Friedkin wove The Exorcist the frightening and realistic story of an innocent girl inhabited by a malevolent entity. Academy Award winner Friedkin who introduces the film and supervised this new video transfer from restored picture and audio elements gets effective performances from Linda Blair Ellen Burstyn Jason Miller Max von Sydow and Lee J. Cobb. The Exorcist remains 25 years later one of the most shocking and gripping movies ever made. Poltergeist: Suburbanites Steve (Nelson) and Diane (Williams) suddenly experience paranormal activity in their home. What begins as minor excitement quickly turns into nasty ghostly encounters. The disappearance of their daughter Carol Anne (O'Rourke) forces the Freelings to bring in parapsychologists and a professional exorcist to exorcise their home. Directed by Tobe Hooper and featuring Oscar Nominated Visual Effects by Richard Edlund Michael Wood and Bruce Nicholson Poltergeist is one of the most entertaining horror films of its time. The Shining: Think of the greatest terror imaginable. Is it a monstrous alien? A lethal epidemic? Or as in this harrowing masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick is it fear of murder by someone who should love and protect you - a member of your own family? From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel Kubrick melds vivid performances menacing settings dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre. In a signature role Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance who's come to the elegant isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has never been there before - or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder.

Carole King may not be the world's greatest singer or most exciting performer, but the quality of her songs more than makes up for those shortcomings in this 16-song, 85-minute concert. Recorded in 1994 in Hartford, Connecticut, the show finds an ebullient King and her eight-piece band exploring the full range of her catalogue, including the brilliant early classics written with then-husband Gerry Goffin ("Up on the Roof", a very bluesy "Chains" and others), songs from the mega-platinum Tapestry album ("So Far Away", "It's Too Late" etc.), and a variety of more recent solo numbers. King also brings out a 12-member choir and, in one of the weirder pairings in recent memory, Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash to enliven two songs, including the rockin' show-closer, "Do the Loco-Motion". A good time was clearly had by all. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com
