Bad posture is a bad habit that tends to come about through today's sedentary lifestyle. Days spent driving or slumped over a computer wreak havoc with our alignment and an increasing number of adults will suffer in their later years with back or neck pain due to these postural habits. This programme will look at ways of improving posture, strengthening essential postural and core muscles as well as mobilising the joints. We are going to counteract the amount of time spent leaning forwards, reducing the amount of stress placed on the spine and supporting joints and ligaments. We will also examine specific postural types offering exercises from throughout the programme particularly beneficial for each. The Ball is a fantastic tool for us to use to improve posture and strengthen those deep core muscles. Due to its unstable surface it is very difficult to slouch on as you would simply fall off! Everything we do on the ball works the small stabiliser muscles and due to its round nature, it allows us a much greater range of movement than if we were to perform the same exercise on the floor. Improving posture is not only to avoid back and neck pain. It can make you look slimmer, more attractive and it is a real reflection to the outside world of how we see ourselves. It improves breathing, circulation which can result in less cellulite as well as better overall functioning of the body. Ultimately though, having better posture, strength and mobility will not only reduce your risks of back or neck pain later in life, but will give you a renewed confidence and poise.

A lieutentant in Napoleon's army (a young Jack Nicholson) traces a mysterious woman to a castle on the Baltic coast and finds himself trapped by a mad baron (Boris Karloff). A documentary about the life of its proprietor and the works of Death Row record label, Suge Knight On The Real is executively-produced by the man himself and was made in 2001, following his release from prison after a sentence for parole violations. The story of Death Row records is a colourful one to say the least, the unofficial version of which is best told in Ronin Ro's Have Gun Will Travel: The Spectacular Rise And Violent Fall Of Death Row Records. This, however, is a decidedly official version that alludes only obscurely and fleetingly to the stories of corruption, violence and high-profile murder that have engorged Death Row from its early 90s beginnings. The segments featuring Knight himself are thoroughly dispensable. The sound quality is poor while Knight rambles like a sort of Stateside Terry Major-Ball, going on at some length about why he thought it necessary to bring along tennis shoes to court on the day of sentencing. His one interesting snippet is his bitchy assertion that Death Row star Dr Dre once told him he desperately wished he were white. The musical clips, a potted history of Death Row, are what make this a worthwhile purchase. Snoop Doggy Dogg, Dr Dre and Tupac Shakur are all featured here and while the subject matter of both the rappers and the videos is often depressingly boorish to the point of obnoxious--pathetic fixations on jewellery, status, "booty" and so on--the mostly Dre-generated, low-riding P-Funk rhythms are irresistible. • The Roger Corman Horror CollectionThe Roger Corman Horror Collection | DVD | (03/02/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Siren DVD's three-disc Roger Corman Collection contains The Little Shop of Horrors and The Terror, which Corman directed, as well as Dementia 13, which he produced. Though he has a reputation as one of the craftiest businessmen in Hollywood, Corman was too cheapskate in the 1960s to bother copyrighting a bunch of his films and so the same titles have been showing up on video and now DVD from many different distributors. All these films were thrown together in odd circumstances to take advantage of leftover sets, contracted performers or tied-up production funds. Little Shop of Horrors (a disguised remake of A Bucket of Blood) was famously made over a three-day weekend "because it was raining and we couldn't play tennis". The Terror exists because Boris Karloff owed a few days' work after completing The Raven and castle sets were still standing. Dementia 13 was written and directed by a young Francis Coppola in Ireland to take advantage of a European trip made for Corman's The Young Racers. All the films are interesting, in themselves and as footnotes to distinguished filmographies. Little Shop of Horrors has a lasting cult reputation for its blackly comic tale of codependency between a skid-row botanist (Jonathan Haze, relying a bit too much on a Jerry Lewis impersonation) and a blood-drinking, flesh-hungry mutant plant voiced by screenwriter Chuck Griffith ("feed meeee!"), with a creepy cameo from a young Jack Nicholson as a masochist who loves to visit the dentist. The Terror, which has Nicholson as the bewildered lead, is a wilfully incomprehensible Gothic picture made up on the spot by Corman and a handful of other directors (including Coppola and Monte Hellman), climaxing with Karloff's bogus baron and a decaying spectre woman swept away by a flood in the dungeons. Dementia 13, a saga of axe murders and mad sculptors, is brisk grand guignol with a lot of creepy imagery to do with drowned children and family rituals. On the DVD: The Roger Corman Collection limply claims the films are "digitally mastered" (note, not "remastered") as they are simply copies of low-quality video onto disc. Because these titles are public domain no one seems willing to take any care with transfers, and all three films are in terrible state. The Terror, the only colour film, looks especially atrocious (Vistascope cropped to full-frame) but the black-and-white films also suffer all manner of damage. The packaging is classy, but it's a shame more work wasn't done on the films themselves.--Kim Newman

  • Of Unknown Origin [1983]Of Unknown Origin | DVD | (01/09/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

A low-rent horror flick from the early 1980s, Of Unknown Origin completely misses the mark in the scare stakes and instead comes across like a grisly, live-action version of Tom and Jerry. Our inept hero is the ambitious, house-proud executive Bart Hughes (Peter Weller), who is left alone by his wife and son to complete a business proposal only to discover that he is sharing his apartment with a mischievous giant rat. Unable to trap or poison his foe, Hughes quickly descends into nightmare-haunted madness and thus the stage is set for a suspenseless battle of wits that is less cat-and-mouse and more idiot-versus-rat. Finding an angry rodent swimming in your toilet might be a pretty unpleasant prospect, but cinematically speaking it's far from terrifying. Created using jerky point-of-view shots and creature effects that range from incongruous real-life footage to button-eyed glove puppets, the rat is an unthreatening villain, despite Weller's best efforts to react in abject horror when he finds the corners of his mail nibbled or his dry groceries spoiled. There are some unsuccessful attempts to make Hughes' plight more immediate to the audience by references to real-life rat problems--he visits a library to research his enemy and finds some disturbing photographs of rat-attack victims and subsequently ruins a dinner party with a genuinely unsettling rant about infestation and plagues--but it's difficult to feel sorry for him when he can't even muster the tenacity to track down a professional exterminator. By the time Weller gets caught in one of his own traps, you will probably be rooting for the rat anyway, and might take some pleasure from a ridiculous denouement in which, dressed in full battle-gear, he completely destroys his beloved apartment by clumsily chasing the elusive vermin with a nail-studded baseball bat. Gore Verbinski's genuinely hilarious Mousehunt did it with a lot more charm. On the DVD: Of Unknown Origin comes to DVD with a basic selection of extras. An entertaining commentary from Peter Weller and the likeable George P Cosmatos III does the film a lot of favours, even if their efforts to talk up its importance as an allegory for man's struggle against nature using comparisons with The Old Man and the Sea, Moby Dick, Alien and Jaws fail to convince. Added to this is the theatrical trailer ("If it doesn't scare you to death, it WILL find another way!"), a choice of languages and scene selection. --Paul Philpott
