| RRP A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to Deep Impact, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that's headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may be the most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer's atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera--so that his little girl won't realise that he's been struck blind. Deep Impact stars Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States. --David Chute

| RRP This is a terrible movie. Frank Marshall (Arachnophobia) demonstrates no control over story, actors, effects or general presentation in this adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel about an expedition into deep, dark Africa that runs into an unknown race of killer apes. The big monkeys attack and attack and attack and have to be fought off with machine guns and lasers--that's pretty much the story, except there's probably an even better one behind "fourth Ghostbuster" Ernie Hudson's bizarre decision to speak with a British accent. While Marshall wants us to root for the human characters, they're all so obnoxious and unbelievable you can't help but feel lousy for the poor apes when they get chopped to bits just for defending their homes against these twerps. If you're not feeling enough environmentalist ire these days, watch this and get angry. --Tom Keogh

Frivolous Lola | DVD | (25/06/2001)
from £14.61
| Saving you £1.38 (9.45%)
| RRP Frivolous Lola is a spirited adult production that keeps very much to Italian director Tinto Brass' modus operandi of making light-hearted sex films with a European art house sensibility. The Lola of the title (played with gusto by Serena Grandi) is a flighty young woman, frustrated by her relationship with local baker's son Masetto. Her constant attempts to seduce him meet with little success, resulting in a passionate affair with her mother's lover, André. As with all of Brass' work, Frivolous Lola is an odd combination of European erotica and Carry On film--not helped by the clumsy English language dubbing and the somewhat bizarre appearance of Britain's own Patrick Mower. Aficionados of the director will also spot his primary fascination with a certain part of the female anatomy as Grandi's bottom dominates the shot at every possible opportunity. On the DVD: Frivolous Lola on disc is digitally remastered, and the picture shows off the lushness of the Italian countryside, even though that was probably the last thing on the director's mind. Extras include an erotic photogallery and an interview with Tinto Brass himself, which does nothing to divert from the image of this man as something of an enigma in his chosen field. --Phil Udell
