Boyz N The Hood is the critically acclaimed story about three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood and of street life where friendship pain danger and love combine to form reality. ""The Hood"" is a place where drive-by shootings and unemployment are rampant. But it is also a place where harmony co-exists with adversity especially for the three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube) an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut) a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) who aspires to a brighter future beyond the ""The Hood."" In a world where a trip to the store can end in death the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne) who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home and violence seems like the only recourse. This powerful portrait of black urban America is ""a film of enormous relevance and importance."" --Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times.

By following up their debut thriller Bound with the 1999 box-office smash The Matrix, the co-directing Wachowski brothers--Andy and Larry--annihilated any suggestion of a sophomore jinx, crafting one of the most exhilarating sci-fi/action movies of the 1990s. With mind-boggling, technically innovative special effects and a thought-provoking script that owes a debt of inspiration to the legacy of cyberpunk fiction, this is much more than an out-and-out action yarn; it's a thinking man's journey into the realm of futuristic fantasy, a dreamscape full of eye candy that will satisfy sci-fi, kung fu, action and adventure fans alike. Although the film is headlined by Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne--who both turn in fine performances--much of the fun and excitement should be attributed to Carrie-Anne Moss, whose Trinity flawlessly mixes vulnerability with immense strength, making other contemporary female heroines look timid by comparison. And if we were going to cast a vote for most dastardly movie villain of 1999, it would have to go to Hugo Weaving, who plays the feckless, semi-psychotic Agent Smith with panache and edginess. As the film's box-office profits soared, the Wachowski brothers announced that The Matrix is merely the first chapter in a cinematically dazzling franchise. --Jeremy StoreyIn the Box Set: That this Collector's Edition should appear less than a year after The Matrix's first DVD release indicates the degree to which the film has become an instant classic and set the initial benchmark for DVD quality and extra features. The chunky black box (about the size of the yellow pages) houses a slide-out tray containing the DVD, eight original lobby cards, an original one-sheet movie poster, six black and white photographs and a movie image card with the corresponding 35mm film frame attached. As with all such sets the whole is rapidly diminished by removing its parts, presenting the dilemma of whether to mount the poster and pictures, or leave them pristine but unseen in their original state. The DVD included is the same version available individually, including extensive behind-the-scenes features on the film's special effects. Contrary to the advertised contents, however, the disc does not contain the audio commentaries by Carrie-Anne Moss, editor Zach Staenberg and visual effects supervisor John Gaeta, or the music-only audio track with commentary by composer Don Davis (all of which are currently only available on the American version). --Steve Napleton

Executive producer Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Spy Kids) is the driving force behind this energetic reboot of the popular Predator films, which pits the dreadlocked alien hunters against a rogues' gallery of human antiheroes, led by a bulked-up Adrien Brody. The Oscar winner acquits himself nicely in the role of a gritty mercenary who finds himself stranded on a jungle planet with a host of criminals and professional killers (among them such scene-stealers as Walton Goggins and Danny Trejo), as well as a seemingly innocent doctor, well played by Topher Grace. They've been deposited there to serve as living targets for a horde of Predators--whose looks, designed by Gregory Nicotero and Howard Berger, are impressively varied and sleek--that use the planet as their private hunting grounds. Laurence Fishburne is also on hand as a soldier who has managed to survive for years in the jungle; he, Brody, and Grace do much to make the pulpy dialogue by Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (adapting a premise penned by Rodriguez in the mid-'90s) palatable. Likewise, Hungarian director Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) lends a great deal of atmosphere and Rodriguez-style momentum to the picture--perhaps more than necessary, since the end result is, like the 1987 original with Arnold Schwarzenegger, a fun B-movie and nothing more, designed entirely to give moviegoers a slick, unchallenging roller-coaster ride. Having said that, it's a vast improvement over the 1990 sequel and the dreadful tie-ins with the Alien franchise, and should provide movie monster aficionados with an afternoon's worth of thrills. --Paul Gaita
