  Despite the original movies' protagonist (Julian Sands) being absent, Warlock III still has a creepy central figure. This is college student Kris (Ashley Laurence) who makes one ludicrously bad decision after another. She inherits a spooky house from the family she never knew. She goes there alone. She invites her friends. Blah blah blah. Even for a direct-to-video movie, the feeling of counting off clichés is overwhelming. There's the stop-start following camera, the light switch not working, dropping the keys at the door, thunder and lightning, tap dripping blood, car not starting, a power outage and thumping noises in the night. All this is in the first 20 minutes incidentally. By the time the Warlock (Bruce Payne) is properly introduced, the film's remaining plot is hardly worth mentioning. You know it already. The kids get picked off one by one. There's a final fight; a double-whammy surprise; then a cod-spiritual feel-good finale. On the plus side there's some well-executed make-up and, better still, it's a reminder of just how great the original was. On the DVD: the film. In 4:3. In stereo. --Paul Tonks

  These first 12 episodes from the second series of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation consolidate the show's well-deserved popular appeal, while beginning to explore (gently at first) beneath the slickly professional surface of the investigators themselves. Gradually we learn more about what makes Grissom and his astonishingly gifted forensics team tick, beyond merely that they're workaholics who seem to require no sleep at all. The show's trademark reveals of vital evidence--be it on the autopsy slab or under the microscope--add a fresh spin to what is, at heart, a good old-fashioned whodunit series. William Petersen brings the requisite air of antiquarianism to a character whose meticulous demeanour and love of order consciously inherits the mantle of Sherlock Holmes (whose vast collection of tobacco samples and bottles of chemicals are the ancestors of CSI's high-tech crime lab). This is a series in which scientific evidence-gathering is elevated to the status of a religion. "When a tree falls in the forest, even if no one is around to hear, it does make a sound", affirms Grissom with the calm assurance of a yogi on the path to Enlightenment. And just when CSI starts to seem a little too pat, just when the trail of clues seems too neat, the show always seems able to throw a surprise or two at us: perhaps there has been no crime after all; perhaps the evidence concerns a completely different crime altogether; or perhaps, as in one brave episode concerning brothers implicated in multiple murders, the evidence simply isn't good enough to convict the right man, even when Grissom knows which one really is guilty. Shot in just six weeks in Los Angeles, Korda's first directorial effort since 'Rembrandt' is an appealing mix of high drama and romance, which succeeded with the critics and audiences alike. Politically the film also made an impact on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, Churchill decided it was his favourite film, while the American Senate decided it was mere propaganda and subpoenaed Korda to appear before them, along with Chaplin and Hitchcock, on the suspicion of being British agents. Also, the film created a stir with the American film censor whose concern with the morals of the picture forced new dialogue to be included to reflect the couple's suffering by commtting adultery. The New York Times critic dwelt on neither the politics or the drama, but complained that such is Leigh's beauty in the film that when she is on screen it is immpossible to concentrate on anything beyond her stunning looks.
