  From The Terminator to Titanic, you can always rely on writer-director James Cameron to show you something you've never seen on the big screen before. The guy may not consistently pen the most scintillating dialogue in the world (and, especially in this movie, he doesn't seem to have a particularly high regard for women), but as a director of kinetic, push-the-envelope action sequences, he is in a class by himself. In True Lies, the highlight is a breathtaking third-act jet and car chase through the Florida Keys. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a covert intelligence agent whose wife of 15 years (Jamie Lee Curtis) finally finds out that he's not really a computer salesman and who becomes mixed up in a case involving nuclear arms smuggling. Tom Arnold is surprisingly funny and engaging as Schwarzenegger's longtime spy partner, and Bill Paxton is a smarmy used-car salesman whom Arnold thinks is having an affair with his wife.   Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito are reunited for a third time to fabulous effect in The War of the Roses. This is a dark, disturbing comedy of marital trauma and revenge, which couldn't be more different from their sunnier outings in Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile. Douglas and Turner, in career-best performances, are the materialistic, consumer-driven Roses of the title (Oliver and Barbara) whose seemingly perfect marriage has soured beyond repair; their only point of contact is their meticulously maintained dream house, which Douglas bought and Turner decorated to perfection. When Turner gets a taste of financial independence, she asks Douglas for a divorce--all she wants is the house and everything in it (aside from his clothes and shaving kit). He laughs at her and she punches him in the face. Things only get worse from there, as nasty divorce proceedings (with DeVito as Douglas's lawyer) give way to insults, threats, ruined dinner parties and pet abuse. And through it all, the Roses begin destroying their beloved home and its contents, just to spite each other. DeVito, who also directed, takes Michael Leeson's blacker-than-black screenplay and gives it a hyper-stylised spin, complete with skewed camera angles and wonderfully expressionistic cinematography (by Stephen Burum) as Douglas and Turner barricade themselves in their house, both refusing to give an inch. Shocking for a mainstream studio picture, with its unsympathetic protagonists, escalating bitterness and disturbing finale, Roses is a poisonously funny valentine to both marriage and 1980s materialism, tempered only by its framing device as a cautionary tale. --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com

  In The Edge writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters; an urbane fashion photographer played by Alec Baldwin and a reserved and intellectual billionaire played by Anthony Hopkins. They find themselves teamed up against both a giant Kodiak bear and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. The subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arched in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced and one rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting.   The sun beat down giving a rare reprieve from the rain and wind so typical of Turnberry as if it knew it had a part to play in the historic events about to unfold on the Ailsa course. The final day of the 1977 Open was to become known as The Duel in the Sun” as two of the game's supreme competitors locked horns in one of the most incredible encounters in major championship history. Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus had been engaged in a fierce battle sparring at the head of the leader board. After three rounds they shared the Open lead three strokes ahead of Ben Crenshaw. Behind them Trevino Palmer and Ballesteros toiled. They were paired on the final day having matched scores (68 70 and 65) and talent for three days. After just four holes of the final round Nicklaus had a three shot lead but Watson pulled even by the eighth. At the ninth the crowd could contain their excitement no longer the ropes broke and the fans spilt on to the fairway. Jack Nicklaus again forged ahead taking a two-shot advantage by the 12th. Watson hit back by holing a 12 foot putt on the 13th and followed it with an unlikely and spectacular birdie from nearly 60 feet at the par three 15th. Nicklaus missed his putt for a matching birdie. Watson birdied the 17th and when Nicklaus missed his birdie putt led for the first time all day. Watson found the final fairway and then delivered an approach to within two feet of the pin at the last. It looked as if Nicklaus was beaten — his drive was inches from a bush and he had an impeded swing. But this was Jack golf's greatest and incredibly Nicklaus smashed a recovery shot on to the final green. Still he was 40 feet from the hole — a putt that broke in all manner of directions. Watson whispered to his caddie “Jack is going to make that putt — and of course he did. Watson now had his birdie putt for the famous Claret Jug. He could have wavered — but he did not. The Open winning putt went in centre cup. This updated edition features the Official Film of the legendary 1977 Open Championships at Turnberry and the original live coverage of holes 12 to 18 of the final day.
