The last defence. The last hope. The battle for the future of the world has begun. In the 1980s, faced with the demise of the drive-in and the rise of the multiplex, New World Pictures the independent studio established by Roger Corman increasingly relied on smaller-scale productions, made with an eye to the cable TV and home video markets. Among these was Def-Con 4, an example of so-called Canuxploitation or Canadian exploitation cinema, riding on the coat-tails of the boom in post-apocalyptic disaster movies that began in the previous decade. Two months after the planet is ravaged by nuclear war, astronauts Howe (Tim Choate), Jordan (Kate Lynch, The Twilight Zone) and Walker (John Walsch, Blow Out) are forced to return to earth now an apocalyptic wasteland consumed by radiation and roamed by cannibal gangs. Forced into desperate pacts with unlikely allies, among them eccentric survivalist Vinny (Maury Chaykin, WarGames), the astronauts must draw on all their resourcefulness to survive this brave new world. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to George Miller's Ozploitation classic Max Mad, Def-Con 4 is an inventive and action-packed low budget sci-fi romp, elevated by a pounding score by New World stalwart Christopher Young (Hellraiser) and making its UK High Definition debut with this brand new restoration from Arrow Video. Happy Birthday to Me typifies the horror genre prior to the self-reflection and irony that saturated the genre in the late '80s and '90s. A solid cast, decent acting, a well-written script, and relatively high production values result in a solid movie that is engaging on its own in addition to offering a glimpse into the history of '80s horror. The plot follows the rules of the genre (later parodied in such films as the Scream and Scary Movie series). A number of teenagers (played by actors who appear visibly older than their characters) from an elite prep school get into mischievous sexual situations fueled by alcohol and pot smoking. As teens start to disappear, murdered in a variety of violent ways, the film suggests a number of suspects. Is the killer the troubled star played by Melissa Sue Anderson who lost her overbearing, social-climbing mother in a car accident that she survived? Or is it the stern school mistress, the wacky, cool social clown, the social misfit, or none of the above? The film keeps you guessing until the final scene. Happy Birthday is a must-see for serious fans of the horror genre and this release is a solid digital mastering of the movie. Hardcore fans should note that the DVD release was not able to secure the rights to the original soundtrack so this version features an alternate soundtrack of largely nondescript '80s electronic music. --Brian Saltzman

Too good for cinema, Amityville Dollhouse went direct to video just like the previous three in this series of eight. But unlike any of the other sequels to the classic 1979 Amityville Horror, this one at least has an original idea. It's a little surreal, but resurrecting the house as a pint-sized plaything has the spark of ingenuity about it. If only something else in the movie did. The Martin family move into a newly built house (nowhere near the original incidentally). Father Bill (Robin Thomas) has warning dreams and nosebleeds, but still happily gives his daughter the dollhouse he finds in their shed of evil. Naturally, spooky things start happening. We guess the toy must be dangerous (without ever learning why) because: it smokes, plays with the lights, alters photographs, blows leaves about, and oozes mustard. All the family get a taste of its badness: little Jimmy finds a tarantula in the piñata, wife Claire gets the hots for son-in-law Todd, whose own girlfriend manages to set her head on fire in the hearth. And so on. At the end of the day, these incredulity-stretching franchise instalments at least have the fun factor of working out who will survive. If not that, then you can root for who you want to see splatted and how. On the DVD: Amityville Dollhouse comes to DVD with a trailer, stereo sound, 4:3 picture. Come on, what else did you expect?--Paul Tonks
