What Have I Done To Deserve This? is a perfect example of director Pedro Almodóvar's earlier work, containing all the elements which earned his films a cult international following. Starring the incomparable Carmen Marua as Gloria, a prescription drug addicted mother battling to make sense of her life and family as the world around her goes crazy. Intelligent, offensive, risqué, hilarious, eccentric, ironic, compelling, sad and sext, this early film shows Almodóvar's genius at it's more raw and untamed, his explosive energy shining through right to the last frame. Riding Giants is more than another blissful surfing movie. It's an outstanding documentary about one era in American alternative lifestyles, when surfing was well-suited to a radical culture of social dropouts. Using an amazing array of amateur film clips, shot for the most part in Hawaii and California from the late 1950s and early '60s, director Stacy Peralta traces the rise of surfing's appeal to young men looking to test themselves in an unorthodox (and sexy) milieu--of "living life to the fullest," as former surfer-turned-screenwriter John Milius (Big Wednesday) puts it at one point. Lengthy chapters on the glories of Oahu's Makaha and the "superstition and dread" that accompanied the big-wave challenge of Waimea Bay are riveting and sometimes heroic, particularly told through the memories of surf legend Greg Noll. Great material, too, about the deadly wonders of surfing Mavericks, California, where the rocks will get one if the violent tides don't. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Anaconda [1997]Anaconda | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £15.99   |  Saving you £-3.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

This giant-man-eating-snake-in-the-jungle thriller definitely scores points as a guilty pleasure, especially with Jon Voight hamming it up as the monster-poacher. He makes life miserable for a team of documentary filmmakers on the Amazon river. Anaconda is one of those movies that exists for no other reason than to give computer animators a chance to strut their stuff with a new digital beastie, and they don't disappoint. It's a lot of fun to watch the mega-snake scarf down its victims and--in the case of Voight--regurgitate him right back up again, all covered in gooey digestive juices. You might wonder why Eric Stoltz, who plays Dr. Steven Cale, showed up for a role that requires him to be off-screen for most of the movie, but hey--when it comes to big snake movies, you might as well put your brain on hold and sitback for the slimy ride. --Jeff Shannon
