This 1997 thriller For Hire ponders the question of what terrible things a person might be persuaded to do, given the right circumstances and the right price. Rob Lowe plays Mitch, a Chicago cab driver trying to make it as an actor, married to the pregnant Faye. Among his clients are bestselling writer Lou Weber (Joe Mantegna), who befriends Mitch and confides in him that a drug dealer is trying to kill him. Over the next few days, Mitch begins to suffer severe stomach pains, collapsing in Weber's apartment after a fare and is diagnosed with inoperable stomach cancer. With only a short time to live, he decides to take up Weber's offer to rub out his drug dealer stalker for $50,000, a nest egg for his family after he's gone. A not entirely unpredictable twist follows, hinted at by the Lucifer-like beard sported by Mantegna and the film alights only briefly to meditate on the potential for evil in all of us before resuming its journey along conventional, though certainly passable Hollywood thriller lines. An intriguing precept--it's just a slight shame that neither the players nor director's hearts seem really to be in this movie. On the DVD: Features a trailer. --David Stubbs

The 1959 Newport Jazz Festival was a true musical watershed, as Jazz on a Summer's Day reveals. This 75-minute film captures an event poised on the cusp of a new era, as the cool jazz of Jimmy Guiffre and the effortless scat of Anita O'Day intermingle with the hard bop of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet and the smouldering fusion overtones of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. There's a crisp contribution from Chuck Berry, a typically feel-good set from Louis Armstrong--including a hilarious duo with Jack Teagarden--and, as evening shades into night, a heartfelt performance from Mahalia Jackson, closing with a melting rendition of "The Lord's Prayer". Bert Stern has assembled all these and more into a satisfying sequence, complete with footage of an enthusiastic and informal audience. Shots of the yachting line-up from the America's Cup round out a blissful and what now seems blissfully naïve occasion. On the DVD: Colour picture quality has worn well, whereas sound has deteriorated notably at times: Thelonius Monk's quarter-tones could easily be a semitone flat! Even so, it's worth putting up with this to enjoy a tour through music-making whose relaxed spontaneity would be impossible to emulate today. --Richard Whitehouse

He decides to dedicate all the extra space in his house to building them though perhaps he should have told his wife (Annie Girardot) first because she seems to have been made unhappy by these developments.

A high-strung yet winning crime comedy, Triggermen features an appealing cast in the story of two British con artists mistaken for a pair of seasoned assassins. Adrian Dunbar and Neil Morrissey play displaced, small-time thieves rotting away in Chicago and desperate to get home to the U.K. Morrissey's character has a solution: He takes a briefcase full of cash left in a hotel lobby for a pair of laidback, Yankee killers (Donnie Wahlberg, Michael Rapaport) hired through a second party to murder a Windy City crime boss (Pete Postlethwaite). The client (Louis Di Bianco) pressures the Brits to get the job done, while the real hitmen figure out they've been supplanted. It all makes for an enjoyable (and violent) lark, but an interesting angle finds Wahlberg's soft-spoken criminal anxious to get out of his trade (he falls for Postlethwaite's gorgeous daughter, played by Claire Forlani) while Morrissey becomes increasingly convincing as a gangster. --Tom Keogh

The Robin Hood Of Modern CrimeThat was how The Saint was often promoted to entice readers, and it's a theme that his creator Leslie Charteris returns to a number of times in his books and stories. It was the publication of The Saint In New York in 1935 that made Charteris an international name. The film rights were sold even before publication and - despite some problem with the American censors over its violent content - became a hit picture for RKO in 1938. Charteris wanted Ronald Colman, Cary Grant or Douglas Fairbanks Jr for the role of Simon Templar. Instead, after Louis Hayward premiered the character, the much-respected George Sanders took on the role in four of the films, with Hugh Sinclair taking the lead in The Saint's Vacation and The Saint Meets The Tiger. The Saint In New York:Simon Templar, The Saint, is brought to New York. His search for the identity of the Big Fellow takes him through many dangerous situations.
Iron Eagles (short of Top Gun) is close to being the definitive boys' movie of the 1980s. An 18-year-old (Jason Gedrick) gets instruction from an old vet (Louis Gossett Jr) in how to fly an F-16 jet and kick butt in the Middle East, all while listening to his Walkman and--oh, yeah--saving his father from terrorist clutches. Gossett wears his tough-love face while the kids run rampant. Speaking of children, young guys must have like this comic-book movie, as its success spawned three sequels. But watch out for the Reagan-era jingoism and political reductiveness. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

At first glance, René Clair might seem an odd match for Agatha Christie's mystery thriller And Then There Were None, but his buoyant touch is exactly what is missing from so many overly solemn remakes. Ten strangers gather for a mysterious gathering on a secluded island. It turns out to be a farewell party, for they have all been sentenced to die for crimes in their past by a self-appointed judge, jury and executioner who could be one of them. One by one, the guests are systematically dispatched as described in the lyrics of the children's rhyme "Ten Little Indians", while the survivors nervously eye one another, splintering into tenuous alliances until the next murder throws suspicion on someone new. A terrific cast of character actors have a ball with Dudley Nichols's witty script. The flamboyant sparring of Barry Fitzgerald (whose paternal Irish lilt takes a sinister dimension) and Walter Huston is almost upstaged by Roland Young's deadpan drollery. Romantic leads Louis Hayward and June Duprez come off as arch and stiff in a company that includes a sinisterly detached Judith Anderson, a dotty and distracted C Aubrey Smith, and a hilariously flippant Mischa Auer. The story has been remade numerous times under the title of Christie's novel, Ten Little Indians, but never as well as this 1945 version. Clair's effervescent, lively little gem is a fatal drawing-room comedy with a body count and a surreal mood of doom. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
