Andre Toulon's living puppets are back in Curse of the Puppet Master, this time in the possession of Dr. Magrew (George Peck), who runs a house of marvels and is experimenting to create the perfect being, without all the inner conflict and torment of humans. To do so, he recruits a talented young woodcarver named Tank (Josh Green). But Magrew's plans get complicated when his daughter (appealingly played by Emily Harrison) falls for the young man. Fans of the Puppet Master series will probably enjoy this sixth instalment. The three leads are well cast, the production design shows some imagination, and the script works--until the abrupt and nonsensical ending. The puppets also seem less animated than in previous films; nevertheless, they still manage to get their whacks in. Trivia factoid: director "Victoria Sloane" is one of several stage names used by David DeCoteau, who also directed instalments numbers three and seven in the series.--Geoff Miller, Amazon.com
Louis Malle's film Les Amants (The Lovers) tells the story of a bored neglected bourgeois house wife who falls for an irreverent young student.
The Ultimate T-Rex Experience! By 1972 the seminal glam-rock band T-Rex was at the height of what came to be known as 'T-Rexstacy': they had already scored three of their soon-to-be ten straight Top 10 hits; their landmark 1971 album Electric Warrior was still riding the charts; critics were declaring them to be 'bigger than The Beatles'; and fans were aping singer-songwriter-guitarist Marc Bolan's iconic sartorial style. To celebrate their success Bolan and T-Rex played two sold-out performances at London's Wembley Empire Pool captured on film by none other than former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and released as the now-legendary concert film Born To Boogie. The only existant recording of a full T-Rex concert Born To Boogie is centered around the dual live performances (with Ringo and Elton John guest starring on two tracks) and interspersed with an acoustic set filmed at John Lennon's mansion goofy backstage footage of Bolan and surreal sequences of nuns and dwarves inserted for visual effect. While the original film ran for roughly one hour this reissue of Born To Boogie restores many of the hours-worth of material shot by Ringo - including three recently discovered songs ('Cadillac' 'Girl' and 'Summertime Blues') and the never-before-seen matinee show - with a clean video transfer and audio remastered by legendary producer and Bolan friend Tony Visconti. In addition Bolan's son Rolan presents a wealth of extra material that includes trailers outtakes deleted scenes studio sessions interviews and more. Featured Tracks Include: 'Hot Love' 'Jeepster' 'Telegram Sam' 'Ride A White Swan' and many more.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. The "widow" referred to in the title of La Veuve de Saint-Pierre isn't a woman, but a mechanism--to be exact, the guillotine, (though the title does take on a second meaning in the tragic final moments of the film). We're on the island of Saint-Pierre, a tiny forgotten French colony off the coast of Newfoundland, midway through the 19th century. A senseless drunken murder is committed and the killer is condemned to death, but zut alors!, there's no guillotine on the island. So one must be requested from the slow, bureaucratic authorities in Paris and, once approved, laboriously shipped over. Meanwhile the killer, a simple-minded giant of a man, is placed in the custody of the Captain, whose beautiful wife starts taking an interest in the prisoner. Director Patrice Leconte has always had an acute feel for place and period--he directed the mordantly witty costume drama Ridicule--and La Veuve vividly captures the sense of remoteness and resentful isolation of this blizzard-swept community. The brooding landscape, all slate-blues and greys, is beautifully framed by Eduardo Serra's camera, and Leconte draws affecting performances from his central trio of actors: Daniel Auteuil, with his intriguingly lopsided face, as the Captain; Juliette Binoche, radiantly vulnerable as his wife; and, in an unexpected but remarkably successful bit of casting, Serbian film director Emir Kusturica as the condemned man. La Veuve de Saint-Pierre may be a touch over-solemn at times, and its message is hardly unexpected; but it's an intelligent, engrossing and richly atmospheric piece of filmmaking. --Philip Kemp
