In this excellent documentary the legendary Marilyn Monroe is brought to life in an expos of one of the screen's most iconic stars. Ever since her untimely death the whole case has been shrouded in mystery and this DVD seeks to unlock some of the secrets of the real Marilyn. With interviews from Dean Martin Shelley Winters and many more we try to understand what her innermost feelings were in the time leading up to her sad demise. From the dysfunctional life she suffered throughout her early years to the blossoming of the young Norma Jean who recognised her stunning good looks were beginning to turn heads; in particular when she posed for the famous nude calendar. Suddenly the gates of the major Hollywood studios were flung open. Her future seemed assured but her life would be turbulent with failed marriages miscarriages and a growing danger from the effects of pill popping. In hindsight it seems a prophetic statement when at President Kennedy's birthday party she was introduced as the `late' Marilyn Monroe - tragically shortly afterwards the unintended pun proved to be the heartbreaking fact!
Marilyn Crispell helps to unlock the secrets of free improvisation on the piano.
This sensational, extremely influential, 1974 low-budget horror movie directed by Tobe Hooper (Poltergeist, Lifeforce, Salem's Lot), may be notorious for its title, but it's also a damn fine piece of moviemaking. And it's blood-curdling scary, too. Loosely based on the true crimes of Ed Gein (also a partial inspiration for Psycho), the original Jeffrey Dahmer, Texas Chainsaw Massacre follows a group of teenagers who pick up a hitchhiker and wind up in a backwoods horror chamber where they're held captive, tortured, chopped up, and impaled on meat hooks by a demented cannibalistic family, including a character known as Leatherface who maniacally wields one helluva chainsaw. The movie's powerful sense of dread is heightened by its grainy, semi-documentary style--but it also has a wicked sense of humour (and not that camp, self-referential variety that became so tiresome in subsequent horror films of the 70s, 80s and 90s). OK, in case you couldn't tell, it's "not for everyone", but as a landmark in the development of the horror/slasher genre, it ranks with Psycho, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. --Jim Emerson

One of David Cronenberg's most successful early films, Rabid features porn star Marilyn Chambers as a woman who becomes infected with a virus after an operation. As result she grows a kind of phallus with which she penetrates her victims as she sucks their blood and thus the disease spreads rapidly. The film displays all Cronenberg's usual horrified fascination with the human body and its sexual function. Looking back, it can be read as a kind of parable about AIDS, but it works perfectly well as an effective low-budget shocker. On the DVD: the widescreen image on the DVD is acceptable quality, as is the sound. The fairly routine extras consist of excerpts from a TV interview with Cronenberg, lasting about 10 minutes; a collection of stills from the film; some written notes by horror expert Kim Newman that give useful background, though in part reproduce what is said in the interview; full filmographies for Cronenberg and the three principal performers, including a long list of Chambers' porn credits. --Ed Buscombe
One of Marilyn Monroe's earliest starring roles (of her ten previous films she had been uncredited in four of them) finds her playing the newspaper office receptionist Iris. The paper is run by Blake Washburn who has just been defeated in a bid for re-election to the state senate and uses the paper to ruffle big business.
Before Kevin Smith became a Hollywood darling with Chasing Amy, a film he wrote and directed, he made this $27,000 comedy about real-life experiences working for chump change at a New Jersey convenience store. A rude, foul-mouthed collection of anecdotes about the responsibilities that go with being on the wrong side of the till, the film is also a relationship story that takes some hilarious turns once the lovers start revealing their sexual histories to one another. In the best tradition of first-time, ultra-low budget independent films, Smith uses Clerks as an audition piece, demonstrating that he can not only handle two-character comedy but also has an eye for action--as proven in a smoothly handled rooftop hockey scene. Smith himself appears as a silent figure who hangs out on the fringes of the store's property. --Tom Keogh
