The exposure of their relationship had devastating consequences, leading to public vilification and prison sentences for Wildeblood and his friends Michael Pitt-Rivers and Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. Enduring a year-long incarceration that involved attempts to alter his sexual orientation, Wildeblood emerged with a determination to challenge the draconian laws that shattered the lives of generations of gay men. A Gothic-comedy masterpiece, The League of Gentlemen Christmas Special is a horrific anthology of three related stories, all set in Royston Vasey, which takes its inspiration as much from the writings of MR James and Edgar Allan Poe as the low-budget Hammer and Amicus shockers that the team parody so affectionately. The stories are all linked by the Dickensian device of Reverend Bernice receiving unexpected guests on Christmas Eve: the first concerns troubled married couple Charlie and Stella becoming unwittingly involved in voodoo and witchcraft; the second features the horrendous Herr Lipp in a Nosferatu skit that reveals the terrible truth about what really goes on in Duisburg; while the third, and best, tells of the horrible hereditary curse that afflicted Dr Chinnery's great-grandfather. This one-off special distils all the League's penchant for disturbing, twisted characterisation and macabre humour into a single hour; the result is one of the most daring "comedies" ever seen on British TV. On the DVD: The League of Gentlemen Christmas Special on disc contains the hour-long main feature accompanied by a diverse and entertaining array of extras. There's another illuminating group commentary; a 20-minute documentary "Tales from Behind the Crypt", in which we get to see excerpts from the team's first ensemble effort, "Highgate House of Horror"; a chat with composer Jody Talbot; and the League themselves "In Conversation" with Paul Jackson in the complete Radio 4 broadcast. A selection of out-takes, extended scenes, character biographies and a photo gallery are all worthwhile, but best of all is a Jackanory special with Mark Gatiss as the Victorian Dr Chinnery telling the Gothic tale of "The Curse of the Karrit Poor", a spot-on Arthur Conan Doyle spoof. --Mark Walker
Worried About the Boy is a 90 minute film, featuring talented newcomer Douglas Booth, Mathew Horne (Gavin & Stacey), Marc Warren (Hustle) and Mark Gatiss, for BBC2's season of celebratory programming on the 1980s. At its heart it is a coming-of-age story about a 19 year old boy moving to London, establishing his personal independence, and becoming an influential part of a fashion cult. In the past 30 odd years, George O'Dowd has made more than a few headlines. This film concentrates in particular the period between 1980 and 1982, just before the success of Culture Club's Do You Really changed his life. Living in a squat on Great Titchfield Street, regularly attending the Blitz Club, falling in and out of love, being photographed for looking fabulous, forming a band... these are experiences that any 19 year old dreams of. George O'Dowd became famous all over the world simply by being himself. The film is a compassionate biography of a much loved icon. Boy George's debut appearance on Top of the Pops was the defining televisual moment of 1982; it heralded in a new era of fashion and pop music. The film takes a wry look at Boy George's determination to stand out from the crowd - even a crowd as distinctive as the Blitz kids. His success was unprecedented - changing a whole generation's attitude to music and gender.Worried About The Boy is an affectionate look at a much-loved icon. The title is taken from a 1986 newspaper headline which broke during George's heavily-reported drug problem of the time - even through the bad times, the film shows how the public's affection for Boy George has remained.
