They try to work a series of jobs (at a dairy farm, a fast-food joint and a livestock auction), but they possess not a jot of work ethic, nor any sense of the consequences of failure.   Though this graphic 1996 version of HG Wells' The Island of Dr Moreau was roasted by critics, it's an utterly fascinating failure, largely due to the performances of David Thewlis, Val Kilmer and especially Marlon Brando in the title role as a mad (and in this case outrageously bizarre) scientist whose experiments in crossbreeding humans with animals have gone terribly awry. Thewlis plays the wayward scholar who is rescued at sea by Kilmer and brought to Moreau's island to discover the doctor's unnatural "children". Fairuza Balk plays Moreau's half-cat daughter, but it's Brando and Kilmer (in one scene doing a killer Brando impersonation) who steal the show, along with the astounding make-up effects created by Stan Winston. A guilty pleasure by any measure, this movie has definite cult-favourite potential. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  Two orphans Sam the Seed (Lee Yi Min) and Tai Pei (Jack Long) are caught stealing grapes from an orchard by wine blender Chang (Chan Hiu Lau). He puts the two lads to task in his distillery as compensation. In time boss Chang takes a shine to the two lads and teaches them drunken boxing. They soon become experts at the art and decide to test out their new skill on the unsuspecting town thugs. But the duo do not know that the the leader of the thugs is none other than Yeh Hu (Lung Fei) who happens to be the enemy of the boss Chang. Yeh Hu gathers up all his lackeys and storms the distillery. The rest is drunken history. This Joseph Kuo offering was one of the best Drunken Master cash-ins to come out of Taiwan. The film told in flashback by the two reminiscing old winos is packed to the gills with top notch fight work and some off the wall training sequences by Taiwan's dynamic duo Jack Long and Lee Yi Min. A must-see for any high impact viewer. Choreographed on the style of Drunken Master by Yuen Cheung Yan who later was responsible for the high kicking action in Charlie's Angels.

  Superstar is a big-screen vehicle for Molly Shannon, the latest comic from the American sketch show Saturday Night Live to have a movie built around her. She isn't exactly funny--in fact, she's a little unsettling. Her creation, the neurotic Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher, invites laughter because she's a little too close to the bone for anyone who grew up feeling ugly and unloved, which is a lot of people. Mary lives with her grandmother (Glynis Johns), who insists that Mary study business. Mary herself yearns to be famous and admired, though for what isn't exactly clear; she envisions some vague combination of singing, dancing, and acting that will make her a superstar. A talent show promises to be her ticket to stardom (the winning prize is a role in "a movie with positive moral values"), and she won't let her loser status or any hostile cheerleaders stand in her way. Meanwhile, Mary acts out dating fantasies with trees and signposts, envisions the school lunch room bursting into a Fame-like dance number, and longs for the biggest jock in school. What makes Superstar more than just a collection of bad high school memories is that, though the formulaic plot redeems Mary, the movie as a whole isn't so sure. Mary completely loses herself in her obsessive fantasies--many inspired by cheesy made-for-TV movies--but there's always someone watching, aghast, as Mary acts out her inner thoughts. Is she misunderstood or freakish? Superstar never commits to one side or the other, which makes it both comic and uncomfortable. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
