  • Bubble Boy [2001]Bubble Boy | DVD | (05/08/2002) from £5.38   |  Saving you £9.61 (178.62%)   |  RRP £14.99

Innocuous, innocent and somewhat idiotic, Disney's bubbleheaded road-movie comedy Bubble Boy plays as a farcical remake of the 1976 cult TV-movie melodrama The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. Jake Gyllenhaal is the good-hearted innocent raised in a sort of human Habitrail of plastic rooms and rubber tunnels. To win back the girl of his dreams (Marley Shelton), he steps out of his indoor greenhouse and into a homemade Ziplock bubble suit. It's the usual story: naive innocent bounces down the highway like a beach ball with legs and wins over the wacky supporting cast of soft-hearted bikers, zombie-like teenage cultists and orphaned "freaks" through purity and pluck. The premise wears thin after a while, but Gyllenhaal keeps the film bounding along with goofy innocence and energetic eagerness. Swoosie Kurtz costars as his religious-zealot clinging mom. Watch for Fabio in an inspired cameo. --Sean Axmaker On the DVD: Bubble Boy contains a surprising amount of special features for what is essentially a B-movie comedy. These include a long winded multi-interview about the main star of the film, the Bubble suit itself; a director's diary, charting the events around the time of filming the movie; a "Production Design Gallery" including intricate pencil drawings and a story board of the Niagara Falls sequence. Along with this, director Blair Hayes and Jake Gyllenhaal offer a gabbled conversation rather than a commentary. --Nikki Disney

Sugar & Spice is a broad satire of American high-school hierarchy set to a sparkling pop soundtrack and featuring many, many shots of cute cheerleaders in tight sweaters and short skirts. "Their cheer blew like a bulimic after Christmas dinner", sneers Lisa (Marla Sokoloff from Dude, Where's My Car?), a bitter B-squad cheerleader who has it in for the A-squad. She's come to the police to solve the mystery of a local bank robbery--a story that begins when head cheerleader Diane (Marley Shelton) and star quarterback Jack (James Marsden) fell in love. Before you know it, Diane's knocked up--but she and Jack are delighted and decide to get married. Their parents disown them immediately, so the young couple ends up in a crappy apartment, working low-wage jobs. They're both so unrelentingly earnest and cheerful that they won't lose heart, but Diane soon realises that their incomes won't support their impending twins. Then, one night as she and her squad (including Mena Suvari of American Beauty) are watching Point Break, they get the idea to rob a bank. The cast is enthusiastic: Sokoloff in particular savouring her atypically nasty role, and there are cameos by Jerry Springer, Kurt Loder, and an almost unrecognisable Sean Young. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

  • The Bachelor [2000]The Bachelor | DVD | (14/08/2000) from £6.98   |  Saving you £13.01 (186.39%)   |  RRP £19.99

The Bachelor got critically slammed when it played in cinemas, probably because reviewers couldn't help comparing it with the movie on which it's based, the brilliant Buster Keaton comedy Seven Chances. But on its own terms, The Bachelor is a modest and enjoyable picture about Jimmie (Chris O'Donnell), a happily single young man who suddenly gets an ultimatum from his grandfather's will: marry by his 30th birthday or lose an inheritance of 100 million US dollars. This is revealed the day before that very birthday. Unfortunately, Jimmie had already proposed to his girlfriend Anne (Renee Zellweger) and been turned down; she can see in his eyes that he isn't ready to get married and refuses to accept him until he is. So Jimmie needs to find a bride--fast. Though the commitment-shy man is a hoary clichè, The Bachelor successfully exaggerates Jimmie's fears to comic proportions. O'Donnell is his usual affable self, but it's Zellweger who seizes every scene she's in and makes something really enjoyable out it. The movie's greatest weakness is that she's such a small part of the second half. Still, there's good supporting performances from Hal Holbrook, Ed Asner, James Cromwell and Marley Shelton (as Zellweger's sister), and Peter Ustinov and Brooke Shields both have very funny scenes. The Bachelor skirts some dangerously chauvinistic territory at times, but by and large it's a pleasant comedy with some genuine good humour. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

  • Pleasantville [1999]Pleasantville | DVD | (25/10/1999) from £7.25   |  Saving you £12.74 (175.72%)   |  RRP £19.99

Fantastical writer Gary Ross (Big, Dave) makes an auspicious directorial debut with this inspired and oddly touching comedy about two 90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) thrust into the black-and-white TV world of Pleasantville, a Leave It to Beaver-style sitcom complete with picket fences, corner malt shop and warm chocolate chip cookies. When a somewhat unusual remote control (provided by repairman Don Knotts) transports them from the jaded real world to G-rated TV land, Maguire and Witherspoon are forced to play along as Bud and Mary Sue, the obedient children of George and Betty Parker (William H Macy and Joan Allen). Maguire, an obsessive Pleasantville devotee, understands the need for not toppling the natural balance of things; Witherspoon, on the other hand, starts shaking the town up, most notably when she takes football stud Skip (Paul Walker) up to Lover's Lane for some modern-day fun and games. Soon enough, Pleasantville's teens are discovering sex along with--gasp!--rock & roll, free thinking and soul-changing Technicolour. Filled with delightful and shrewd details about sitcom life (no toilets, no double beds, only two streets in the town), Pleasantville is a joy to watch, not only for its comedy but for the groundbreaking visual effects and astonishing production design as the town gradually transforms from crisp black and white to glorious colour. Ross does tip his hand a bit about halfway through the film, obscuring the movie's basic message of the unpredictability of life with overloaded and obvious symbolism, as the black-and-white denizens of the town gang up on the "coloureds" and impose rules of conduct to keep their strait-laced town laced up. Still, the characterizations from the phenomenal cast--especially repressed housewife Allen and soda-shop owner Jeff Daniels, doing some of their best work ever--will keep you emotionally invested in the film's outcome and waiting to see Pleasantville in all its final Technicolor glory. --Mark Englehart

  • Just A Kiss [2002]Just A Kiss | DVD | (06/10/2003) from £11.53   |  Saving you £4.46 (38.68%)   |  RRP £15.99

A romantic comedy with an absurdist edge, Just a Kiss begins when Dag (Ron Eldard), a commercial director, sleeps with his best friend's girlfriend, Rebecca (Marley Shelton), a dancer, while she's touring in Europe. When their infidelity is revealed back home in New York City it sets off a cascade of people falling into bed together, including Dag's girlfriend Halley (Kyra Sedgwick), Rebecca's other lover Andre (Taye Diggs) and a waitress at a bowling alley (Marisa Tomei) with strange obsessions and loose morals. Just a Kiss slips to and fro in time and veers in and out of rotoscope animation, but even the live sequences have a cartoonish edge; it's hard to care about what happens to these caricatures, no matter how tight their pants or how skimpy their tank tops. Also featuring Patrick Breen (who wrote the screenplay) and Sarita Choudhury. --Bret Fetzer
