What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice? sees a change of direction for Robert Aldrich's unofficial trilogy which all involve "ageing actresses" in macabre thrillers (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? and Hush ... Hush, Sweet Charlotte). The busy Aldrich only produced What Ever Happened to Aunt Alice?, calling in TV director Lee H Katzin (a Mission: Impossible regular) to handle the megaphone. Aldrich also opted to shoot the film in pastel colours appropriate to the unusual Arizona desert setting rather than the gothic black and white of the earlier films. The film cast the less iconic Geraldine Page as the genteelly unpleasant Mrs Clare Marrable. Left apparently penniless by her departed husband, Mrs M opts to keep up appearances by hiring a succession of timid elderly housekeepers, bossing them around with well-spoken nastiness, duping them out of their life savings and, on the pretence of getting help with a midnight tree-planting program, lures them into their own graves, batters them to death and plants lovely pines over them. Page gets her own way with the meek likes of Mildred Dunnock, until the feistier, red-wigged R!uth Gordon applies for the job and gets down to amateur sleuthing. While Bette Davis and her partners went wildly over the top in previous films, Page and Gordon play more subtly, finding odd pathetic moments in between the monstrous, irony-laced horror stuff. The supporting cast of pretty or handsome young things, mostly putty in the hands of the manipulative Page, contribute striking little cameos (Rosemary Forsyth sports a pleasing 1969 hairdo as the kindly but intimidated neighbour), but the film belongs to its leading ladies, delivering a fine line in twist-packed cat-and-mouse theatrics. The video is handsomely letterboxed, as befits a film made before widescreen films were shot with all the action in the middle of the frame to facilitate television sales. --Kim Newman

A group of Mexican revolutionaries murder a town priest and a number of his christian followers. Ten years later a widow arrives in town intent to take revenge from her husband's killers. This film starts in spectacular fashion as a gang of rebels gun down the entire congregation of a church young and old including the priest. The barbaric nature of this opening continues throughout A Town Called Hell. The majority of the movie is set in the Mexican town of Bastardo which is under the leadership of Don Carlos (Telly Savalas). A hearse arrives at the gates with an empty coffin and two passengers - Alvira (Stella Stevens) a blonde widower clothed in black and her mysterious unnamed companion (Dudley Sutton). She is searching for the man that killed her husband and offers Carlos gold if he will hand over the guilty man - who she believes to be named Aguila.

For the time, there had never been a more lavishly produced science fiction TV series than Space: 1999, which was British-made on an astounding first-season budget of 3.25 million pounds, and ran for two seasons from 1975-77. What keeps fans enthralled after all these years has only partly to do with the first-rate production values, the plausibly constructed spaceship models and expert special effects. The tone of the show is one of scientific dispassion, setting it apart from its TV SF predecessors such as Star Trek in which the mood is more generally convivial. Our heroes here are in dire circumstances that require cool heads as a survival trait. Those circumstances: the moon and the 311 crew members of Moonbase Alpha experience a cataclysm that causes the moon to break away from Earth orbit and travel endlessly through space, making our heroes into unintentional explorers. No TV series has created a more palpable feel of hard science fiction than this. Of course, the show is not without its detractors, having been soundly lambasted for its many scientific errors. No less august a figure than Isaac Asimov criticised the show for its premise in the opening episode "Breakaway", which had nuclear explosions on the "dark side of the moon" somehow propelling it out of Earth orbit and flying through space without regard to physical law. In "Earthbound", aliens travelling to Earth state it will take them 75 years to reach their destination, making one wonder why it didn't take the moon that long to encounter the aliens. While these are serious complaints, fans tend to remember the scientific seriousness of the series and the sense of awe created by the many strange creatures and phenomena they encounter on their journey through the galaxy. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

Ricky Martin may be the undisputed king of Latino pop but this European Tour DVD collection presents the star in a wholly uninspiring way. It's the televisual equivalent of a 100 per cent unofficial Ricky Martin annual, packed full of ancient library photos and sneaked pictures of the star. Ricky's live concert performances of his Spanish-language greatest hits are fine but are terminally scarred by the poor picture and sound quality. Throughout the presentation a distracting "RM" logo is displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. The interview and behind-the-scenes footage is farcical, and any interesting information about Ricky uncovered in the interview is ruined by the pathetic visual effects. Equally as awful are the voice-overs, which resemble the style and tone of those used on Channel 4's Eurotrash, but with any irony squeezed out. The translations (from Spanish to English) are decidedly dodgy, with one Spanish female fan saying she likes Ricky because "he has great buns". The majority of the visual material is stretched out of proportion, continually repeated in slow motion and appears to have been shot on an ordinary video camera. Even die-hard fans of Martin are strongly recommended to steer well clear of this release, especially with other DVDs such as the Official Video Collection and One Night Only providing far better value for money. On the DVD: As well as the overall poor quality of the feature, there are no decent extras. The bonus video clip of "La Bamba", is a camcorder recording of Martin performing a song on stage with a live recording of the track dubbed over the top. Due to the use of a tiny font, and a flickering typeface the biography and discography are impossible to read. Capitalisation and punctuation also seem to be randomly applied in the biography. Furthermore the feature and bonus material is only presented in standard picture format and in stereo.--John Galilee
