  • The Wedding Tackle [2000]The Wedding Tackle | DVD | (03/04/2006) from £19.99   |  Saving you £-15.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

Harking back to the wilderness days of British cinema, The Wedding Tackle is an unsophisticated comedy of manners and relationships. Dealing with the impending matrimony of Hal and Vinny, a union that neither are particularly keen to enter into, the story intertwines a number of characters during the events of Hal's stag night. As the title suggests, much of the humour is aimed below the waist, and although it does wend its way to some sort of romantic conclusion, subtlety is not the film's strong point. Victoria Smurfit's Clodegh is by far the best character, an urban Tank Girl whose morals are as erratic as her driving skills. Bold, brash and noisy, The Wedding Tackle isn't the worst film around, but we can do so much better. --Phil Udell

  • Rio Bravo [1959]Rio Bravo | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £6.58   |  Saving you £7.41 (112.61%)   |  RRP £13.99

When it comes down to naming the best Western of all time, the list usually narrows to three completely different pictures: Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo, Hawks' Red River and John Ford's The Searchers. About the only thing they all have in common is that they all star John Wayne. But while The Searchers is an epic quest for revenge and Red River, a sweeping cattle-drive drama, Rio Bravo is a much calmer film. Basically, it comes down to Sheriff John T Chance (Wayne), his alcoholic friend Dude (Dean Martin), the hotshot new kid Colorado (Ricky Nelson), and deputy-sidekick Stumpy (Walter Brennan), sittin' around in the town jail, drinkin' black coffee, shootin' the breeze, and occasionally singin' a song. Hawks--who, like his pal Ernest Hemingway, lived by the code of "grace under pressure"--said he made Rio Bravo as a rebuke to High Noon, in which sheriff Gary Cooper begged for townspeople to help him. So, Hawks made Wayne's Sheriff Chance a consummate professional--he may be getting old and fat, but he knows how to do his job, and he doesn't want amateurs getting mixed up in his business; they could get hurt. If the configuration of characters sounds familiar, it should: Hawks remade Rio Bravo two more times--as El Dorado in 1967, with Wayne, Robert Mitchum, and James Caan; and as Rio Lobo in 1970, with Wayne, Jack Elam, and Christopher Mitchum. The film achieved additional notoriety in the 90s when Quentin Tarantino revealed that he uses it as a litmus test for prospective girlfriends. --Jim Emerson, Amazon.com

Hugely controversial Factional Drama in 4 parts each from a different point of view - Metropolitan Police the criminal the solicitor and the prison system. Groundbreaking in both its style and its damning portrayal of corruption in the British legal system; the British Police had never been portrayed in that way before on TV. The central premise of the drama is that it claimed that the Police and the criminals were not actually that different in terms of the way they operated. Caused a massive storm when broadcast on the BBC; the switchboards were jammed for hours with irate callers. Questions were asked in the House of Parliament concerning the issues raised by Law and Order.

Recently widowed Ben, his glamourous girlfriend Nicky and his small daughter K.T. are on a road trip across the Southwest, which comes to a screeching halt when they witness an accident. Heading to the nearby isolated desert town of Hillsboro to report it to the Sheriff (played by L.Q. Jones), they are met with a hostile reaction from the locals, who are gripped by paranoia and fear due to a series of gruesome deaths, as well as the mysterious disappearance of eleven of the community's children. As the bodies continue to pile up around them, Ben and his family find themselves joining the sheriff, a local priest and the town's enigmatic physician Doc Duncan (Strother Martin, Cool Hand Luke) in the midst of a mystery that points towards a deadly satanic cult... Produced by Alvy Moore and L.Q. Jones, a veteran character actor best known for his work with Sam Peckinpah, The Brotherhood of Satan is an atmospheric and chilling tale of terror that provides a crucial missing link between Rosemary's Baby (1968) and The Devil's Rain (1975) in the cycle of turn-of-the-seventies shockers involving sinister devil-worshipping cults lurking within the dark shadows of modern-day America. • The Madness Of King George [1995]The Madness Of King George | DVD | (28/01/2002) from £8.89   |  Saving you £1.10 (12.37%)   |  RRP £9.99

More wit than wisdom? More style than substance? Both these charges have been levelled at The Madness of King George, but neither are entirely fair. It could be that the notional subject matter--the psychological collapse of George III, later attributed to the neurological disease porphyria--implies a profound, analytical approach of the kind associated with Oliver Sachs. However, as the screenplay was written by Alan Bennett, based upon his stage play The Madness of George III, what we have here is a typically shrewd, elegant and poignant depiction of how the world seems when viewed by someone who sees things in their own unique way. And as it is by Bennett, who allows himself a brief, bumbling cameo appearance, the dialogue is of course scalpel-sharp throughout and often extremely moving. The historical accuracy is strong on detail, but there's an element of artistic license, such as the depiction of HRH's apparent partial recovery at the close of the film (although the scene itself, in which Hawthorne's befuddled monarch rallies himself to address his subjects, is a joy). In the end, though, we really don't mind.On the DVD: the widescreen DVD extras include the theatrical trailer, a featurette and a lucid commentary by director Nicholas Hytner. --Roger Thomas
