Based on the novel by Peter Hedges (who adapted his own book) and directed by Lasse Hallström, What's Eating Gilbert Grape is the funny, moody tale of young Gilbert (Johnny Depp), who lives at home in a small town with his 500-pound Momma (beautifully played by non-professional Darlene Cates), his mentally retarded younger brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio, utterly convincing), and his sisters. Not a lot happens--Arnie keeps climbing a water tower and getting stuck; Gilbert is involved with a married woman (Mary Steenburgen), then meets a nice new girl in town who's closer to his age (Juliette Lewis). And that's exactly what makes this movie so much more than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood product: it's not about some mechanical, formulaic plot; it's about these characters, and it allows you to spend some time with them and get to know them. Depp proved yet again that he's one of the most interesting, unpredictable, and risk-taking actors in American movies; while a pre-Titanic DiCaprio deservedly received an Oscar nomination. --Jim Emerson

Dr. Megan Hunt was a top neurosurgeon until a car accident ended her career. Now that she can no longer help the living Dr. Hunt is Philadelphia's most notorious medical examiner. Although she's amazing at her job Dr. Hunt's reputation of being difficult precedes her wherever she goes. She's never encountered a boundary that she wouldn't cross. Her powerful boss tries to protect her - as long as she doesn't step too hard on the wrong toes. Although he grudgingly acknowledges her skill seasoned police detective Bud Morris is not as enthralled with her methods. Luckily Dr. Hunt does have a few fans. Her junior medical examiners rely on her expert advice and her investigative partner Medical Investigator Peter Dunlap accepts her unorthodox behavior. Maybe that's because he's the only one who knows that Dr. Hunt's challenging personality is partly rooted in guilt. Before she gave up neurosurgery Dr. Hunt accidentally killed her last patient. Add in a touch of bitterness from a hostile divorce that awarded her ex sole custody of their teenage daughter and you have one sad social life. You see when it comes to understanding the dead Dr. Hunt is amazing. But when it comes to her relationships with the living she has a lot of work to do. • Sleeping Beauty : Deluxe Collector's Edition [1959]Sleeping Beauty : Deluxe Collector's Edition | DVD | (13/01/2003) from £17.97   |  Saving you £10.01 (66.82%)   |  RRP £24.99

Disney's 1959 Sleeping Beauty was the studio's most ambitious effort to date, a lavish spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapted from the music of Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked queen in Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her sixteenth birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Fortunately, some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna and Merryweather are on hand to assist. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here, alongside Malificent's castle, which, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a macabre dance celebrating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. --David Kronke, Amazon.com

  • Watership Down [1978]Watership Down | DVD | (25/06/2001) from £8.96   |  Saving you £7.03 (78.46%)   |  RRP £15.99

Much like Richard Adams' wonderful novel this animated tale of wandering rabbits is not meant for small children. It is, however, rich storytelling, populated with very real individuals inhabiting a very real world. The animation is problematic, sometimes appearing out of proportion or just below par; but it seems to stem from an attempt at realism, something distinguishing the film's characters from previous, cutesy, animated animals. A band of rabbits illegally leave their warren after a prophecy of doom from a runt named Fiver (voiced by Richard Briers). In search of a place safe from humans and predators, they face all kinds of dangers, including a warren that has made a sick bargain with humankind, and a warren that is basically a fascist state. Allegories aside, Down is engaging and satisfying, and pulls off the same amazing trick that the novel did--you'll forget that this is a story about rabbits. --Keith Simanton, Amazon.com

Sequels might be the lifeblood of mainstream Hollywood film production but it took 30 years for The Odd Couple 2 to reunite Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and writer Neil Simon for a follow-up to their scintillating 1967 success. Now Felix (Lemmon) and Oscar (Matthau), once mismatched flatmates, are forced to renew their old friendship when their respective children get married. Cue all the ingredients for a disaster-riddled journey to California for the wedding: lost luggage, allergies, dangerously wanton women (and their husbands), illegal immigrants and repeat visits to the same police station. All the old irritations rise quickly to the surface, Simon's dialogue is as sharp as ever and the vocal sparring skills of these two magnificent comedy players are undiminished, though there's a certain poignancy in their physical frailty: "I'm too old to hit but I could spit you to death", threatens Matthau at one point. Crumpled and puffy, neither of them looks in great shape. But the film gives a neat symmetry to two of the finest cinematic careers. As Matthau says towards the end, it's "the biggest goddamndest déjà vu anyone's ever had". On the DVD: The Odd Couple 2 on disc has no extras apart from the original theatrical trailer. The film is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby Digital Surround soundtrack. It looks and sounds good. Alan Silvestri's score borrows the Neal Hefti theme from the 1967 original from time to time. --Piers Ford

One of director Sam Peckinpah's lesser-known and little-seen outings, Junior Bonner is actually one of his most interesting for being so relaxed. Yet it deals with the themes that always interested him: the man who has watched the world pass him by and realises that his time is gone. In this case, it's rodeo rider Junior Bonner (Steve McQueen), who returns home to try to win top prize in the bull-riding competition to raise money to stake his father (Robert Preston) to a future. As easy-going and good-natured as you'd like, with a delicious chemistry between Preston and a feisty Ida Lupino as Junior's estranged parents, who are still able to strike romantic sparks.
