Daniel Kokotajlo's impressive follow-up to his award-winning Apostasy is a brilliant adaptation of Andrew Michael Hurley's acclaimed novel. In 1970s Yorkshire, Richard and Juliette relocate to Richard's childhood home, hoping the idyllic country surroundings will benefit their young son. However, a sudden tragic event drives a wedge through the family, which triggers Richard, an academic archaeologist, to bury himself in obsessively exploring a local folkloric myth. Kokotajlo's mysterious slow-burn folk horror feels tangibly of the moist Yorkshire earth, while evoking the spellbinding nature of great supernatural and occult horror films from the 70s. It is a wildly eerie piece, tightly stitched together with genuine chills and two bold, unflinching performances from Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark.Special Features¢ Presented in High Definition and Standard Definition¢ Newly recorded audio commentary by director Daniel Kokotajlo, production designer Francesca Massariol and sound designer Ben Baird¢ Newly recorded interview with composer Matthew Herbert (2024) ¢ Newly recorded interview with author Andrew Michael Hurley (2024, 20 mins) ¢ Interviews with stars Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark (2023, 10 mins)¢ Interview with the Hare Team' (2023, 19 mins): creature effects supervisor Sharna Rothwell and lead puppeteer Aidan Cook discuss their work ¢ Behind-the-scenes footage (2023, 5 mins)¢ Deleted scene (2023, 1 min) ¢ Actor Sean Gilder reads The Hare, a folk song' from the original Starve Acre novel by Andrew Michael Hurley (2024, 1 min, audio), accompanied by a selection of stills from the film ¢ Image galleries¢ Theatrical trailer¢ Newly created audio description track for the blind and visually impaired¢ Newly created optional English descriptive subtitles ¢ **FIRST PRESSING ONLY** Illustrated booklet featuring new writing on the film by Professor Catherine Spooner, new writing on contemporary folk horror by Dr Adam Scovell and a text by director Daniel Kokotajlo
Genre master Clint Eastwood tries something different with the languid, introspective Hereafter--and succeeds (for the most part). All of the characters at the heart of Peter Morgan's screenplay, which has the feel of a European art film, have suffered a loss or survived an ordeal. They feel disconnected from those who can't relate, which is most everybody. George Lonegan (Matt Damon, Invictus), a Bay Area factory worker, developed psychic powers after a childhood illness but just wants to lead a normal life, despite his brother Billy's efforts to turn him into a John Edwards-like celebrity (Jay Mohr plays Billy). Marie LeLay (the versatile Cécile De France), a TV reporter, emerges unharmed from 2004's Indian Ocean earthquake, only to find her Parisian existence slipping away from her (the tsunami sequence that opens the film is frightfully convincing). And in London, soft-spoken 12-year-old Marcus (Frankie McLaren) loses his twin, Jason (George McLaren), only to end up in foster care. While George reaches out to a lovely, if insecure woman (the overly jittery Bryce Dallas Howard) he meets in a cooking class, Marie writes a book about her experience, and Marcus seeks spiritual guidance. In a Babel-like turn of events, all three find themselves in the United Kingdom, where they cross paths, but what sounds contrived plays out in a surprisingly believable fashion. Eastwood and Morgan (The Queen) don't presume to know what happens after death, suggesting instead that those who search for answers deserve something other than disrespect and derision. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Until recently, 26 year-old Barry Allen (series star GRANT GUSTIN) lived a normal life as a C.S.I. in the Central City Police department. He was secretly in love with his best friend, Iris West (series star CANDICE PATTON), daughter of Barry's surrogate father, Detective Joe West (series star JESSE L. MARTIN). Joe adopted Barry fifteen years ago after Barry's mother was murdered and Barry's father, Henry Allen (recurring guest star JOHN WESLEY SHIPP), received a life sentence for the crime -- though Barry always maintained that a mysterious Man in Yellow was responsible. Then the S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator exploded, creating a dark matter lightning storm that affected Barry, bestowing him with superspeed and making him the fastest man alive. But Barry wasn't the only person who was given extraordinary abilities that night. The dark matter also created meta-humans, many of whom have wreaked havoc with their powers on the city. With the help of his scientist friends at S.T.A.R Labs, Caitlin Snow (series star DANIELLE PANABAKER), Cisco Ramon (series star CARLOS VALDES), and Dr. Harrison Wells (series star TOM CAVANAGH), Barry began a journey as The Flash to protect the people of Central City from these powerful new threats. With this team, Barry was finally able to defeat the Man in Yellow, aka The Reverse Flash, but in their epic battle, a Singularity was ripped in space and time that threatened to destroy them all. After successfully closing the Singularity from destroying Central City, Barry thinks he's seen the worst... but the arrival of Jay Garrick (recurring guest star TEDDY SEARS) reveals that the Singularity actually opened portals to an alternate Earth, known as Earth-2, which is being terrorized by a formidable evil speedster named Zoom. As Zoom sends an army of Earth-2 meta-humans to Earth-1 to defeat Barry, he receives unexpected assistance from the Earth-2 doppelganger of his former mentor, Harrison Wells. Meanwhile, Cisco discovers that he, too, was affected by the dark matter of the Particle Accelerator and must come to terms with his newfound powers. As Barry struggles to juggle life as a hero, he realizes just how hard it is to find happiness when the lives of everyone you love are at stake. He finds some solace in the companionship of his father, Henry Allen, who was freed from a wrongful life sentence... but when Zoom kills Henry before Barry's eyes, Barry's newfound stability is shattered. Blinded by anger, Barry unwittingly plays into Zoom's game and uncovers the evil speedster's true goal: to destroy all Earths in the multiverse. In the race of his life, Barry ultimately gets the upper hand against Zoom and defeats his nemesis. But unable to celebrate victory, Barry makes a world-shaking decision and speeds back in time to the night his mother died to stop The Reverse Flash from killing her, irrevocably changing his past and determining his future anew.

Wild Things is the kind of lurid, trashy thriller that you'll either dive into with unabashed pleasure or turn away from in prudish disgust; it's entirely your choice, but we suggest the former option since it's obviously much more fun. The plot's so convoluted it's hardly worth describing, except to say that it's set in humid Florida and involves a respected high school teacher (Matt Dillon--yes, Matt Dillon as a teacher!) who is faced with accusations of rape by a student (Denise Richards, from Starship Troopers) who had been giving him the kind of attention most people would consider improper for such a "nice" young lady. Another student (Neve Campbell) raises a similar charge against the teacher, and that's when a police officer (Kevin Bacon) begins to investigate the allegations. Just when you think the movie's gone overboard with its shameless sex and absurdly twisted plot, in drops Bill Murray as an unscrupulous lawyer (of course) to spice things up with insurance scams and welcomed comic relief. As directed by John McNaughton (who has a way of making just the right moves with this kind of film noir melodrama), Wild Things is a bona fide guilty pleasure--the kind of movie you may be ashamed to enjoy, but what the heck, you'll enjoy it anyway. --Jeff Shannon

Return to Oz is a 1985 live-action sequel that split critics and audiences alike: you don't fool with Mother Nature, spit into the wind, remake Casablanca, or trash the land of Oz. The 1939 classic musical is so beloved that it's almost impossible to imagine seeing Dorothy in shock therapy, a crumbled yellow brick road, the ruins of Emerald City, and the Tin Man turned into stone. But L Frank Baum, the author of the original Oz books, portrayed just that with his continuing stories of Dorothy. When you get by these tough facts, the film version is solid entertainment for the over-seven set. Dorothy (a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk in her debut) is back in Kansas, where Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) is at the end of her rope: her niece is not sleeping and going on about a place called Oz. Therapy may be the answer, but luckily the scary clinic goes dark before Dorothy can be, er, cured (but the lead-up will scare the munchkins out of most kids). She wakes up in the land of Oz, now in tatters, and searches for its king, the Scarecrow. A new set of friends, including a tin soldier, a talking chicken, and a pumpkin man, help her against new villains, including Princess Mombi (Jean Marsh)--complete with a set of detachable heads--and the evil Nome King (Nicol Williamson with a great assist from Will Vinton's Claymation). The sole directorial effort of Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch is stuffed with marvellous effects that foreshadow later works by Tim Burton and the Henson non-Muppet films. --Doug Thomas
