Nuts In May | DVD | (27/03/2000)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP An early masterpiece from Mike Leigh, Nuts in May is a filmed-for-TV adaptation of an earlier stage play. The cast is small (only five characters who matter), but the acting is impeccable, and the mix of wicked humour and social observation make this one of Leigh's best works. Keith Pratt, a man who fully earns his surname due to his nit-picking obsessions with order and detail, takes his partner Candice-Marie, a well-meaning but irritating hippie, on a camping trip. There they meet Trevor, a shy teacher who finds their enforced friendship intrusive but is too polite to extricate himself, and a brash young couple of bikers, Honky and Finger, whose loud and chaotic personalities lead them into conflict with the repressed and dogmatic Keith. Plot isn't the issue here, since Leigh is far more interested in teasing out the subtleties of human behaviour, which he does with forensic skill in several unforgettable scenes. Funny and painful at the same time, like all Leigh's successes, Nuts in May is brilliantly acted by all concerned, though special mention must go to Roger Sloman, for bringing to life the appalling but ultimately pitiable Keith, and Alison Steadman, whose portrayal of fey, goofy and tragi-comic Candice-Marie is every bit as memorable and nuanced as her more famous turn as Beverley in Leigh's Abigail's Party. --Andy Medhurst

| RRP Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) was once the greatest editor the world had ever seen. Since a horrific accident left him with four wooden fingers on his right hand, he's had to resort to cutting pulp films and trash pictures. When the lead actors from the film he's been editing turn up murdered at the studio, Rey is fingered as the number one suspect. The bodies continue to pile up in this absurdist giallo-thriller as Rey struggles to prove his innocence and learn the sinister truth lurking behind the scenes. Functioning as a straight-up send-up of Dario Argento, Mario Bava and the cinematic sorcerers of '70s slasher films, Canadian horror comedy THE EDITOR is a charming tribute to the unsung classics of giallo, an Italian subgenre known for its gory and gruesome erotic horror. Lost - Series 2 - Part 2 | DVD | (02/10/2006)
from £6.77
| Saving you £24.22 (357.75%)
| RRP By the second half of the second series of Lost, the debates are really hotting up. Is it the most cleverly plotted, densely packed television programme of recent times, cunningly working on many levels and lacing lots of hidden clues as it moves along? Or is it pretentious, slow-moving tosh, that's desperately trying to stretch out a simple concept to fill as many seasons as possible?
Halloween V: The Revenge of Michael Myers | DVD | (27/10/2003)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Starting around Halloween 4, that masked nut Michael Myers stopped chasing his sister (played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the first and second films, as well as Halloween H20) and went after his niece. Now he's chasing her around again in part 5, but it's a lot of other people who die in the process. Donald Pleasence continues his mad-doctor bit from the earlier movies, Danielle Harris is the unfortunate relation, and Donald L. Shanks plays the monster. The film is an improvement on parts 2 and 4 (part 3 having nothing to do with Michael Myers), but it still amounts to routine slaughter with none of John Carpenter's stylistic brilliance from the original movie. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked | Blu Ray | (02/07/2012)
from £10.99
| Saving you £14.00 (127.39%)
| RRP Pop-culture-savvy kids (and their parents) will enjoy Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked as a pleasant, lighthearted getaway with a lot of laughs for the little ones. Jason Lee reprises his role as Dave, the manager of the worldwide musical stars the Chipmunks, Simon (voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler), Theodore (Jesse McCartney), and the eternally mischievous Alvin (Justin Long). The boyz are joined by their girl-group counterparts, the Chippettes: Eleanor (Amy Poehler), Jeanette (Anna Faris), and Brittany (Christina Applegate). The grown-up viewer might wish that some of the personality of the actors playing the chipmunks were allowed some room to run, but since the voices are put through the "chipmunk synthesizer," they all pretty much end up sounding the same. Nonetheless, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked moves along at a brisk pace, with easy chuckles for toddlers and their older siblings, and some in-jokes to keep the parents amused. The plot involves the gang going on a cruise (the first half of the film, in fact, seems like a commercial for Carnival Cruises), but when Alvin is involved, something inevitably goes awry. Soon everyone is marooned on a deserted island and there are adventures and misadventures as they try to be rescued. Along the way, there are references to the Indiana Jones movies, Castaway, Gilligan's Island, and even Lost ("There are 'Others'?"). And of course, it has plenty of chipmunk-singing pop songs--lots of Lady Gaga, for those of you keeping track. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is a big bag of popcorn of a family film that younger kids especially will love. --A.T. Hurley
