This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her", answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots", and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college. Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something". Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating
Now in her twenties Anne returns to Avonlea for the first time since Marilla Cuthbert's death. Gilbert has been offered a staff position at a hospital in New York and persuades Anne to come as he has arranged a postion for her at a large publishing house. Big city life isn't what they expected. Anne's manuscript is stolen by a dashing American writer Jack Garrison and Gilbert becomes frustrated with the politics of working in a large city hospital. Anne convinces Gilbert to go home to Avonlea so that they can be married and put their horrible experiences behind them. When they return to Prince Edward Island they are catapulted into the middle of wartime society. Gilbert soon feels the pressure from the community and enlists as a medical officer. Anne's hopes are shattered when Gilbert is listed as missing in action which takes her on a cross-Atlantic search for him as the fury of war is unleashed around her. A bizarre twist of fate reunites Anne with Jack Garrison now working as a war correspondent. He is travelling with a young French girl Colette and their baby son Dominic. Colette is killed during an attack on their field hospital. Anne learns of Jack's role in an American intelligence effort to end the war. Her affiliation with him lures into a web of intrigue in exchange for help in finding her husband. Jack falls through on his promises. As the war comes to a close Anne finds Gilbert weaving through the crowded streets of a German city released from a POW camp. She loses Jack forever. However she is determined to find his child whom she and Gilbert adopt upon their return to Prince Edward Island.
The enchanting sequel to the Emmy award-winning Anne of Green Gables tells the continuing story of Anne Shirley as she makes the transition from a romantic impetuous orphan to an outspoken adventurous and accomplished young teacher.

Silver Bullet is a generic, by-the-numbers Stephen King film with a Stephen King screenplay adapted from an earlier novella. Back in the innocent days of 1976--the age of innocence gets later every year--the town of Tarker's Fall finds itself in the grip of mass hysteria when something starts tearing people apart. Only a crippled child Martie (Corey Haim) works out the truth, which is that the new pastor is a werewolf. Eventually he manages to convince his supercilious sister Janey and his unreliable drunk Uncle Red (Gary Busey) and there is the usual confrontation involving a silver bullet melted down from the children's religious jewellery; the title also refers to the boy's motorised wheelchair. The film neglects interesting possibilities--the lynch-mob mentality that takes over the town fizzles after the major vigilantes are killed, the pastor tries to justify the killings to himself--in favour of stock ultra-violent confrontations and extended metamorphoses; its major strength is a familiar King theme, the helplessness of being a child in a world full of people who will not listen to you. On the DVD: The DVD comes with a director's commentary by Daniel Attias and dubbed versions in German, French and Italian. The soundtrack has Dolby sound which brings out the stylised fairy-tale elements in the score and the widescreen picture is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic ratio. The sometimes muddy-looking night-scenes are balanced by brisk pastoral daylight scenes that have their own innocence. --Roz Kaveney
