  Comedians and TV personalities Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen (hosts of the Danish version of Shooting Stars) play extreme versions of themselves in the Curb Your Enthusiasm-alike comedy of embarrassment. Based on the hit sitcom, Klown finds Frank on the verge of the fatherhood. So how better to prove his paternal credentials than borrowing his awkward 13-year-old nephew to accompany him and Casper on their annual tour de pussy? What follows is far too crude and outrageous to describe here! Imagine a Scandinavian relative of The Inbetweeners and The Hangover with a dash of Lars von Trier at his most playfully transgressive and you re getting close to the shocking hilarity of Klown.

  Broadway Danny Rose is vintage Woody Allen. Danny (Allen) is a down-at-heel theatrical agent whose regular clients include talking bird acts and a man who twists balloons into animal shapes. His faith in these eccentrics never fails, despite the fact that everyone leaves him for another agent in the end. Complications ensue when one of his clients, an overweight crooner, starts a romance with a mafia widow (excellently played by Allen's partner of the time, Mia Farrow). The mob think Danny is her boyfriend, forcing the two of them to take evasive action, at one point dodging bullets among giant floats for a forthcoming Fourth of July parade. The script is witty, the acting superb, the situations inventive. The film is shot in black and white and looks superb for it. On the DVD: The DVD is widescreen, with extremely clear sound so you won't miss a single wisecrack. Dialogue is available in French, German, Italian and Spanish as well as English. It's a pity, however--since the film is so short (84 minutes)--that there are no extras apart from the theatrical trailer. --Ed Buscombe

  Collection of five horror films. 'The Witch' (2015) follows a puritan family living on a farm in New England in 1630. When their baby son suddenly goes missing, the superstitious parents William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie) begin to wrongly suspect their daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) is responsible and capable of witchcraft. When further sinister things start to happen, suspicion and fear begins to tear the family apart and drives them to commit a series of heinous acts. In 'Crimson Peak' (2015) 19th-century author Edith Cushing (Mia Wasikowska) meets and falls in love with the wealthy and mysterious Sir Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston). However, after Edith moves into Crimson Peak, the Sharpe family home, to live with Thomas and his sister Lady Lucille (Jessica Chastain), she realises that there is much more to the Sharpe family and their house than meets the eye. In 'Maggie' (2015), when Maggie Vogel (Abigail Breslin) gets stuck outside after curfew, she is bitten by a zombie and becomes infected with the Necroambulist virus. Her father Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger) goes searching for her and finds her in a quarantined zone of a hospital. Her doctor agrees to release her but warns Wade that before Maggie completely transforms he will have to place her back in quarantine. However, when Maggie's condition eventually begins to worsen, Wade refuses to return her to hospital, leaving the family facing some important decisions. In 'The Visit' (2015), while their mother is on holiday, young siblings Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) and Becca (Olivia DeJonge) are sent to stay with their grandparents. After being warned not to leave their bedroom after 9.30pm and suspecting that something is amiss in the house, the kids start to investigate. However, after finding their grandparents behaving strangely, a number of disturbing events occur which leave the pair facing a fight to survive. Finally, in 'Unfriended' (2015), one year after their classmate Laura (Heather Sossaman) committed suicide after an embarrassing video of her was circulated around the school, six friends log on to Skype to take part in a group chat. But when someone starts using Laura's old account and appears to know the full details about the video and the identities of those responsible for its distribution, the six friends begin to fear for their lives as whoever it is starts to torment them inside their homes.

Pabst, brought to life by one of the starriest casts he ever assembled: Kathy Bates, John Cusack, Mia Farrow, Jodie Foster, Julie Kavner, Madonna, John Malkovich, Donald Pleasence and Lily Tomlin, plus Allen himself. He plays the cowardly Kleinman, reluctantly recruited by a vigilante mob in search of a serial killer. When he finds himself involved with a troupe of circus performers whose sword-swallower Irmy (Farrow) and clown Paul (Malkovich) want to leave to start a family, Kleinman thinks that this is a welcome distraction but the killer has other ideas... Described by the New York Times as a brazen, irrepressible original, Shadows and Fog is the most visually and narratively unpredictable of Allen's films. Carlo di Palma's dazzling cinematography makes full use of the title elements, but it's the richness of the multi-layered narrative, with its Shakespearean oscillation between burlesque comedy and poignant tragedy that really sticks in the mind.

  Tim Burton was born to bring Alice in Wonderland to the big screen. Ironically, his version of the Victorian text plays more like The Wizard of Oz than a Lewis Carroll adaptation. On the day of her engagement party, the 19-year-old Alice (a nicely understated Mia Wasikowska) is lead by a white-gloved rabbit to an alternate reality that looks strangely familiar--she's been dreaming about it since she was 6 years old. Stranded in a hall of doors, she sips from a potion that makes her shrink and nibbles on a cake that makes her grow. Once she gets the balance right, she walks through the door that leads her to Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas), the Dormouse (Barbara Windsor), the Blue Caterpillar (Alan Rickman), and the Cheshire Cat (a delightful Stephen Fry), who inform her that only she can free them from the wrath of the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter channeling Bette Davis) by slaying the Jabberwocky. To pull off the feat, she teams up with the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp in glam-rock garb), rebel bloodhound Bayard (Timothy Spall), and Red's sweet sister, the White Queen (Anne Hathaway in goth-rock makeup). While Red welcomes Alice with open arms, she plans an execution for the hat-maker when he displeases her ("Off with his head!"). Drawing from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, Burton creates a candy-colored action-adventure tale with a feminist twist. If it drags towards the end, his extravaganza still offers a trippy good time with a poignant aftertaste. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

John Travolta plays a barely educated museum guard who is laid off from his job and ends up holding his former boss (Blythe Danner) and a bunch of schoolchildren hostage. Dustin Hoffman is a former television-network journalist making a grab at the limelight again by pushing and controlling press coverage of the story. What follows is by the numbers and not nearly as enlightening or enthralling as other films (such as Dog Day Afternoon or Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole) about simple events manipulated into a media circus. Despite Travolta's tragic performance and Hoffman's impassioned one, the film breaks up over efforts to blame electronic voyeurism for social chaos. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

We see managers worrying over slow ticket sales for a stand at the Rose Bowl, observe sound checks at concert sites, get a tour of the group's multiple keyboard banks and listen with some alarm to singer David Gahan describe his steroid-based throat treatments. There are plenty of performance clips, but for music alone, Disc 2 in this package contains the uninterrupted Rose Bowl show, including the plaintive "Blasphemous Rumours", the exultant drama of "Stripped", and the dreamy "Somebody". Pennebaker's promotional video "Everything Counts" is also here, but don't miss the director's recent, touching and informative interviews with the now 40-something, individual members of Depeche Mode. --Tom Keogh
