Season 6: Between seasons, Cox and David Arquette were married, leading to "T.O.W. After Vegas" adding "Arquette" after everyone's title credits. Unfortunately, on-screen it's divorce time again despite "T.O.W. Ross Hugs Rachel", since he secretly tries avoiding an annulment of their accidental marriage. Far more out in the open is Chandler and Monica's relationship. Moving in together creates lots of fun as the others move back and forth into each other's apartments. It also leads to Joey finally showing a tender side toward temporary roommate Janine (Elle Macpherson). By now his chat-up catchphrase: "How you doin'?" had caught on, but he needed to fall for someone. He kept the fun alive all year pretending to have a Porsche, starting work on the show Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E. and by falling for Chandler's card game Cups in the excellent "T.O.W. On the Last Night" (one of many directed by Schwimmer). More fun came from Ross trying to teach everyone the mental discipline Unagi, popping ridiculous moves with Monica for their childhood dance routine and having a fluorescently dazzling smile in "T.O.W. Ross' Teeth" (also featuring a near-silent cameo from Ralph Lauren). Far more talkative was Reese Witherspoon as Rachel's sister--another temptation for Ross. What they briefly had wasn't as complicated as later in "T.O.W. Ross Meets Elizabeth's Dad", who turns out to be an Emmy-winning Bruce Willis (thanks to becoming friends with Perry during The Whole Nine Yards). The fans' need for love interest and continuity had established the seasons' format now. Another two-part finale offers jeopardy--then resolution--from Tom Selleck's Richard in "T.O.W. The Proposal" between Chandler and Monica. --Paul Tonks

The Endless Summer is one of the first and most influential films of the surf movie genre creating and defining an entire category of cinema which has endured and evolved in the decades since its release in 1966. This powerful film has become a timeless masterpiece that continues to capture the imagination of every new generation. Director Bruce Brown follows two surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August on a trip around the world in search of the ultimate surfing adventure and the perfect wave. From the uncharted waters of West Africa to the shark-filled seas of Australia to the tropical paradise of Tahiti and beyond these California surfers accomplish in a few months what many people never achieve in a lifetime... they live their dream. The title comes from the last line in the film which expresses the idea that if one had enough time and money it would be possible to follow the summer around the world making it endless. The surf-rock soundtrack to the film was provided by The Sandals. In 2002 The Endless Summer was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being ""culturally historically or aesthetically significant"".

  • Star Trek : 1-10 [1979]Star Trek : 1-10 | DVD | (11/08/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £109.99

Even if (when) more big-screen adventures come along, this Star Trek DVD Movies Collection will remain a fitting memento of this astonishingly long-running franchise. Containing all 10 movies from The Motion Picture (1979) to Nemesis (2003), this box set charts the voyages of the USS Enterprise(s) from the original ship's first major refit since its legendary five-year mission to the last outing for the Enterprise E in the next century. After this, there will be new ships and new crews. The most famous starship in the galaxy has finally retired. Along the way, there have been many highs and just a few lows. The Motion Picture's Director's Edition solved many of the theatrical release's problems. Its follow-up, The Wrath of Khan, is still regarded as the series' finest hour. Movies III and IV chart Spock's fall and resurrection in quasi-religious terms, but also add welcome humour in The Voyage Home. Taken together II, III and IV make for a satisfyingly self-contained trilogy, which is one reason why the next entry, The Final Frontier, seemed like a disappointment. Khan director Nicholas Meyer returned for the superior VI, The Undiscovered Country, allowing the original crew to sign-off in style. Attempting to please fans old and new, the messy Generations ended up pleasing almost no one. Thankfully, the second Next Generation film, First Contact, comes in a close second to Khan in the series-best stakes. Neither Insurrection or Nemesis could quite match what had gone before, but both were solidly entertaining adventures nonetheless. On the DVDs: The Star Trek DVD Movies Collection is a 10-disc set complete with booklet and postcard-size Nemesis film stills. However, only the first four movies are presented in their Special Edition versions--these have the same content as the feature discs of the separately released two-disc sets--and the Nemesis disc also contains a commentary, documentaries and deleted scenes. Movies V-IX are bare-bones releases, though, with no extra content to speak of. Fans will therefore not find this box set to be a substitute for the individual Special Edition versions. --Mark Walker

Father Vassey (Michael Rooker) has a problem. Using his two 9mm, laser-sighted cannons, he has tracked down and killed the holders of a heretic ceremony meant to bring a demon into the world. Not just any demon, for this one's reason to be is nothing less than uncreating creation. The problem is, Vassey's too late. The demon has manifested and escaped, and is now on the hunt for the soul of a young boy who is believed to be saint material, due to the stigmata he had at birth. The film is directed by Jamie Dixon, heretofore a special effects supervisor, who shows canny restraint where special effects are concerned. The shadowy demon of the title is depicted often by a fluid black cloud, which is functional without losing its eeriness or credibility. The acting is solid, never campy, though Michael Rooker sometimes feels out of place. And the climactic scenes, built up to with good pacing, are fraught with peril and excitement. All in all, this is a worthwhile effort for a first-time director, and that makes it one of the best direct-to-video releases I've seen in quite a long time. I just wish I could locate the Bram Stoker story it's supposed to be based on. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

The Best of Monty Python's Flying Circus will probably be purchased mostly for the standards--those sketches that have become the staple material of every office joker and pub bore in Christendom--the Spanish Inquisition, the Australian philosophers, the Ministry of Silly Walks. Good fun though these are, once you've expunged the memory of a million witless impersonators, this collection is really worth owning for the material that never quite registered in the popular consciousness. Sketches such as the Summarise Proust Competition, the misunderstanding over the Hungarian phrasebook and John Cleese's manically embittered architect with a grudge against the Freemasons are every bit as funny as the more familiar hits and, free of any associated baggage, they will startle and delight the younger viewer as much as Python must have startled and delighted their parents when first broadcast in the 1970s. On the DVD: The Best of Monty Python's Flying Circus is a three-disc set, and each volume is equipped with a sketch selector that is fussier than strictly necessary. But this is more than compensated for by the wonderful Terry Gilliam animations that the viewer uses to navigate. Subtitles are available in English only. --Andrew Mueller
