| RRP Perrault's timeless fairy tale of the mistreated waif turned princess has inspired a number of composers and choreographers since its first incarnation as a major ballet by Petipa in 1893. But none has gained the popularity of the version set by Frederick Aston for Sadler's Wells Royal ballet in 1948. It was the first full-length ballet devised by a British choreographer.Though the role of Cinderella was danced by Moira Shearer at the premier it soon became a signature piece for Margot Fonteyn and a mainstay of the company's repertoire. In addition to providing the choreography Ashton also gave himself a plum role as one of the Ugly Sisters and appears on this video in tandem with Kenneth MacMillan another celebrated British choreographer en travesti.

| RRP While horror conventions may change from generation to generation, there are ideas that will scare us no matter what time period we inhabit. Dead of Night is a classic horror anthology that effectively plays on those timeless fears. Mervyn Johns stars as a man who has been summoned to a house with a group of strangers he has never met but has seen in his dreams. As they convene, he predicts certain events will happen as they do in his dreams and when they do, the other guests relate their own experiences with the supernatural, including tales of a possessed mirror, a sinister ventriloquist's dummy and an eerie premonition of death. Throughout the group meeting, the protagonist fears something horrible will happen to him and we are left to wonder what it might be. The film's final, revelatory sequence offers an unexpectedly horrific surprise. It may have been made in 1945 but Dead of Night is still spooky. --Bryan Reesman

| RRP Ian Carmichael stars as the aristocratic detective Lord Peter Wimsey in this classic BBC adaptation of the novels by Dorothy L. Sayers. These five feature-length adaptations bring all the wit elegance and style of one of England's classiest detectives to the scene of the crime - five crimes to be exact - each one presenting an interesting challenge for this sharp-witted mastermind. Join Lord Peter Wimsey as he uncovers the mysteries of: Clouds of Witness; The Unpleasantness at The Bellona Club; Murder Must Advertise; The Nine Tailors; and Five Red Herrings. Set Comprises: Clouds Of Witness: During the Wimsey family retreat in Yorkshire Captain Cathcart the fiancee of Lord Peter's (Ian Carmichael) sister Mary Winsey receives an unwelcomed letter causing him to flee Riddlesdale Lodge in the middle of the night. But he is not the only one with departure plans. One Wimsey plans to escape in the early hours of the morning until she finds a body in the garden. The Unpleasantness At The Bellona Club: The plot of The Unpleasantness At The Bellona Club takes a new turn concentrating not on who did it? but moreover when was it done? A vast inheritance depends on the timing of the deaths of an elderly brother and sister - the sequence of deaths is the Big Question. Once this is established only then can Peter Wimsey's sleuthing turn to who the murderer is... Murder Must Advertise: The aristocratic sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey investigates the death of a young copywriter at a top advertising agency. Can Lord Peter solve the crime before more deaths occur? The Nine Tailors: At the wedding of Sir Charles Thorpe's son an extremely valuable emerald necklace belonging to Lady Wilbraham is stolen. Thanks to Lord Wimsey's quick thinking the culprits are apprehended although the whereabouts of the jewels remain a mystery. Many years later when a mutilated unidentified corpse is found in the grave of the recently deceased Lady Thorpe Wimsey investigates and becomes embroiled in an attempt to recover the necklace that was stolen many years before. Five Red Herrings: When Lord Peter goes on holiday to Scotland he is hoping to do nothing more strenuous than catch some trout. Even Wimsey's loyal servant Bunter is looking forward to taking some time off to go painting. However when Bunter notices an easel in the distance but no sign of the artist Lord Peter is called into action. The easel belongs to an unpopular local artist Campbell whose body is discovered lying on the rocks below the popular vantage point. Was it an accidental fall? Wimsey suspects not and with six possible suspects he must use all of his detective skills to determine the five red herrings and expose the murderer.
The Professionals - Season 1 | DVD | (10/06/2002)

| RRP An instant hit in 1977, The Professionals was a fast-moving and occasionally sharp-shooting action series about a couple of cool dudes in a fictional secret service organisation, CI5. The creation of Avengers veterans Brian Clemens and Albert Fennell it was often gritty stuff, leavened by the mildly subversive attitudes of Bodie (Lewis Collins) and Doyle (Martin Shaw) who ultimately are always loyal to their gruff boss George Cowley (Gordon Jackson). Helped by witty, if rampantly sexist, dialogue and trousers of sterility defying tightness, Bodie and Doyle enjoyed a good run as 1970s sex symbols. Jacksons often exasperated Cowley kept them in line with just the right degree of Puritanical steel. The first series set the standard for five successful years, milking the dramatic potential of a rich gamut of scenarios, from international espionage to racism and religious evangelism; Bodie and Doyle usually being called upon to protect a controversial figure from the assassin's bullet. Shaw would later dismiss The Professionals for its stereotypical violence and for a long time refused to allow reruns. In fact, as cult television goes, it has weathered well. Many of its themes are as relevant today as they were then. The constantly elliptical script ("I want you to see that he's well taken care of") is tremendous fun. And despite the macho drive, the whole thing has a camp archness which betrays its Avengers pedigree. Great for a nostalgic wallow. On the DVD: The Professionals on disc still displays the slightly ropey quality of late 1970s television film complete with brassy soundtrack. Presented in 4:3 format, the original production values disconcertingly recreate the original post-homework viewing experience. But the DVD extras are the thing here. Interactive menus allow you to drill down into the history of each of the 14 episodes, cross-referencing guest stars. And there's an appropriately camp fashion note.--Piers Ford

| RRP South Park co-creator Trey Parker goes straight for the gross-out humour in this live-action farce set in the adult-movie industry. Parker stars as an innocent Mormon kid who gets sucked into the world of pornographic film-making and becomes an international sensation as the stud superhero Orgazmo, all the while hiding his secret life from his milk-fed fiancée. It's practically a one-man show for Parker, who directs, writes, stars, and even performs the self-penned theme song as frontman for his rock band, and perhaps he should have spread the responsibilities a little. As an actor he's surprisingly appealing--his dazed grin and bleached white surfer-dude hair give him an engaging air of innocence. Paired with long-time crony Dian Bachar, the diminutive actor who plays his superhero sidekick Chodo Boy, they bring a Hardy Boys naiveté to the rude world of mobbed-up producers and jaded adult film stars. But the film is only fitfully funny, with vulgar jokes that are often more disgusting than humorous and clumsy comic timing sabotaging promising scenes. Only rarely does it reach the heights of his hilarious cut-out cartoon series South Park, but when he delivers he does so with the carefully cultivated tasteless excess his fans have come to know and love. Matt Stone co-stars as a clueless photographer while the real-life adult film star Ron Jeremy appears as a gross gangster henchman. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
And Now You're Dead | DVD | (23/04/2001)
from £3.59
| Saving you £12.40 (345.40%)
| RRP And Now You're Dead may nominally be a heist movie about two rival gangs out to steal a diamond, but in reality it's an excuse for a series of exceptional action set-pieces as only Hong Kong cinema knows how to do. The film is actually set in Prague and features both a mixed Chinese and European cast, and some fairly horrendous dubbing. Fortunately no one is going to be watching for the dialogue, and the plot--assorted gangsters betray each other, while others find friendship and redemption--has been replayed endlessly since John Woo's A Better Tomorrow (1986). While Michael Wong makes an acceptable Chow Yun Fat substitute as professional thief Marty, Shannon Lee's ruthless assassin is a revelation. She is Bruce Lee's daughter, and having already appeared in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993) and Blade (1998), she delivers perhaps the toughest action heroine since Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor in T2. It's a breathtaking performance, especially in a deliriously extended police station battle which recalls the original Terminator. Overlook the clumsy comic relief and the sub-Bond finale, and settle back to enjoy an insanely frenzied bloodbath packed with over-the-top stunts and razor-sharp martial arts. --Gary S. Dalkin
