With compelling sympathetic performances from double Oscar nominee Burgess Meredith and accomplished Irish actor Kieron Moore this powerful psychological drama shows the almost super-human demands of a profession that ranks amongst the most challenging. Adapted from his own novel by BAFTA-winning author and screenwriter Nigel Balchin Mine Own Executioner is presented in a brand-new High Definition transfer from the original film elements. Meredith stars as Felix Milne a lay psychiatrist in post-war London who is enlisted to treat Adam Lucian a fighter pilot deeply traumatised by his experiences in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Beleaguered by emotional problems of his own Milne embodies the mixture of dedication self-distrust and self-criticism that characterises someone with a genuine vocation for the psychiatrist's work; but is he qualified to treat a patient as disturbed and potentially destructive as Adam? WWI - the war in which 9 million soldiers died. This was a truly global conflict and meant to be “the war to end all wars”. In the documentary Michael Palin travels to the old battlefields in France and Belgium to see the places where American British French Canadian and German troops were fighting as the war came to an end at 11am on 11th November 1918. Michael counts down the last hours of WWI and questions the estimated 11 000 casualties which occurred that day; many in the hours after the Armistice had actually been signed. He tells the stories of the last soldiers of each nationality to be killed in the final minutes leading up to the 11 o’clock cease-fire. Using newly discovered photographs and original research never before seen on television using contemporary film archive newspapers and state of the art graphics this film tells the explosive story of the final day of World War One. He discovers the terrible truth that in those final 6 hours - essentially on that last morning - the killing continued. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission alone records 863 British and Commonwealth deaths for 11/11/18. One historian estimates that over 11 000 soldiers on all sides were killed wounded or were missing on the final day of the war. This is a higher figure than D-Day in WWII when the allies were fighting a just cause to liberate Europe from the Nazis as opposed to the final day of WW1 when the war was over. How could killing on this scale ever be justified?
The words of the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum--"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!"--a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, based on the Latin comedies of Plautus and set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hot test directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amid all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. Frankie Howerd, who played Pseudolus on the London stage, kept the tradition going with his Up Pompei TV series. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

In Undisputed, Rocky gets a prison-block makeover and the generic combination packs a vicious one-two punch. Owing much to the macho, gut-busting B-movies of Hollywood's golden age, this no-nonsense drama gets right down to business, beginning when heavyweight champ "Iceman" Chambers (Ving Rhames) enters Sweetwater prison on a rape charge. The prison has a boxing programme, and convicted killer Monroe Hutchen (Wesley Snipes) is the 10-year undefeated champion. A challenge bout is coordinated by an aging mobster prisoner (Peter Falk) and the head guard (Michael Rooker), and Undisputed pummels its way to its brutal and unpredictable conclusion. Colourful characters abound (foul-mouthed Falk is the hilarious standout), and seasoned director Walter Hill (coscripting with his Alien partner David Giler) brings them together with invigorating focus. There's not an ounce of fat on this tough-minded movie, and even its inevitable outcome seems freshly unexpected. Obviously inspired by Mike Tyson's ill-fated escapades, Undisputed turns fact into potent cell-block fiction. --Jeff Shannon

An off-beat minimalist thriller from idiosyncratic director Maxwell Munden The House in the Woods stars B-movie stalwarts Patricia Roc and Michael Gough as a trendy couple who get in over their head in their quest for a little peace and quiet. Though The House in the Woods is presented here in a brand-new transfer from original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio there are still some issues with the soundtrack. While they have been corrected as much as possible viewers will notice intermittent audio issues. They find a delightfully remote woodland cottage which the owner a melancholic widowed artist with a Larry Adler fixation is happy to rent them at a pittance. All too soon they realise that something is not quite right with their landlord and much to Geoffrey's horror he realises that the plot of his new murder mystery is being played out for real...
