Tired but watchable adaptation of the popular 60s TV show of a friendly Martian who lives with an agreeable earthling. Like Disney's other live-action remakes 101 Dalmatians and Flubber, the emphasis is on quick-moving scenes and special effects--not character. Jeff Daniels is the bemused earthling who gets to know Christopher Lloyd's alien ways. Much of the film feels like a retread borrowing heavily from other sci-fi comedies (and "fish out of water" films), including Lloyd's own Back to the Future. Lloyd and his talking space suit (voiced by Wayne Knight who brings the same personality as his Newman role on Seinfeld) don't know simple Earth customs but inexplicably know every pop culture reference in the last 10 years. Daryl Hannah and Elizabeth Hurley are along for the ride as Daniels' good-girl and bad-girl flames. TV's Martian, Ray Waltson, shows up as a secret agent alien hunter--and pours more emotion into his scenes than the rest of the movie combined. Ages 6 and up. --Doug Thomas

In 2004 Michael Franti decided to `walk his talk' and traveled to the war zones of Iraq Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. This wasn't a USO green zone sponsored visit - Franti and his team organized a trip that would take him to the core of the red-zoned war torn neighbourhoods of Baghdad the West Bank and Gaza Strip armed with only a guitar video cameras and the intent to experience first hand the human cost of war. Throughout his journey he shares his music with families doctors musicians soldiers and everyday people who in turn reveal to him the often overlooked human cost of war. Out of this expedition Franti has produced and directed a compelling documentary film titled I Know I'm Not Alone With its guerrilla style footage captured in active war zones the documentary is unlike the many academic and politically driven pieces in the marketplace instead offering the audience a sense of intimate travel and the opportunity to hear the voices of everyday people living creating and surviving under the harsh conditions of war and occupation. And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python's first feature, is a reworking of their best skits from the first two seasons of the TV series. Originally made for the US market (where the show had yet to be aired), it was shot on film outside the usual studio sets ("Nudge Nudge", for example, is set in a tavern filled with passers-by). The writing and performances are fine and the film is packed with some of their best bits: "How to Avoid Being Seen", " Hell's Grannies", "Blackmail", "The Lumberjack Song" and "The Upper Class Twit of the Year", among others. Many of the sketches have been shortened, however, and the loss of the overly bright video sheen (the film has a muddy, dull look to it) and the invigorating presence of a live audience leaves the film sluggish at times. They're still feeling out the possibilities of the feature length, which they conquered with their next movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974). --Sean Axmaker
