Based on the beloved autobiographical novel by Elspeth Huxley, BBC miniseries The Flame Trees of Thika brings an eventful childhood in Eastern Africa to vivid life. In 1913, 11-year-old Elspeth Grant (Holly Aird) traveled with her mother, Tilly (Hayley Mills), from England to Kenya to help build a coffee plantation. (Born in 1907, Huxley was actually six at the time.) Her father, Robin (David Robb), who had preceded them, was waiting to greet his family in the arid town of Thika. Also waiting for them were lions, elephants, giraffes, and countless other creatures (the 18-week production was filmed on location in Kenya). Directed by Roy Ward Baker (A Night To Remember) and written by John Hawkesworth (Upstairs, Downstairs), The Flame Trees of Thika isn't just about one girl, or one family, adrift in an occasionally hostile foreign land, but also about the dangers of colonialism. The Grants, their neighbors, the Palmers (Nicholas Jones and Sharon Maughan), and most of the other Europeans in Thika feel certain they're bringing culture to the uncivilized, without realizing what they're destroying in the process. Ian Crawford (Ben Cross from Chariots of Fire), is one possible exception to the rule, but he brings another kind of danger in his pursuit of Mrs. Palmer. Since their actions are seen through the eyes of a child, The Flame Trees of Thika is never preachy, but the meddling of these adults--however well intentioned--in the affairs of the Masai, the Kikuyu, and other locals frequently creates tension. As Tilly notes, "It's like two whole separate circles revolving around each other--their world and ours--and only just touching occasionally." What began as Elspeth's coming-of-age story, becomes one for her parents, as well, in this sensitive and engaging series. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

  • The Rolling Stones - On a Roll - Starting up The Rolling Stones [DVD]The Rolling Stones - On a Roll - Starting up The Rolling Stones | DVD | (10/06/2013) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £11.99

The Rolling Stones are one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of our time having sold in excess of 200 million records worldwide. This fascinating programme tells the story of the early days of the band and how they became The Rolling Stones we know today. Jagger and Richard were childhood friends becoming reacquainted in 1960 at Dartford Railway Station due to their love of music. Later meeting Brian Jones who in 1962 went on to form The Rolling Stones. The story of the early Stones is very much a tale of how Brian Jones forged the band with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and became a key catalyst in the creation of their early sound. But whether it was the pressures of early fame or through his addiction to drugs his role in the band became untenable. Even though he is credited as originally forming the band he was eventually over shadowed by Jagger and Richard and his role gradually diminished until in June 1969 he was asked to leave. Less than a month later and under questionable circumstances he was found dead in his own swimming pool believed to have taken his own life. Using performance footage and rare interviews footage with Brian Jones Mick Jagger Charlie Watts Keith Richards and Bill Wyman as well as The Stones Manager (1962/67) Tony Calder and Brain Jones' former partner Pat Andrews this in depth programme provides a fascinating insight into the original formation of this incredible super group during their first decade. The programme concludes at the staged event in Hype Park 5th July 1969 which became recognised as a memorial concert to Brian Jones. This DVD is a must for all music and Rolling Stones fans.

By 1976 Welsh wonders the Man band had been a working unit for eight years. At this point in their career the only founding member still standing was Mickey Jones. He was joined by long time drummer Terry Williams in again out again and in again Deke Leonard (Then on his third stint of duty) keyboard player Phil Ryan who had also had a touch of the ""Deke Leonard's"" in that it was his second stint with the band and new boy John McKenzie on bass. The band feeling that they had gone as far as they could go decided to go out with style on a British ""Farewell"" tour to promote their most recent long playing platter The Welsh Connection. The tour's highlight would be a series of concerts at the London Roundhouse on the 10th 11th and 12th of December. The Roundhouse had been the scene of many Man triumphs during the seventies so perhaps it was the ideal way for the band to bow out. The band would also be recorded at the Roundhouse with the results turning up on the posthumous live album All's Well That End's Well. Over the three days however the band were also filmed at the Roundhouse and the resultant film which includes performances from the three days and features interviews with the band as well as the bands manager and even the hard working put upon road crew. The band are in top form but let's face it when were they not in top form? In addition to the informative and hugely enlightening interviews the band perform some classic Man material including 771 551 Born With A Future Bananas and Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. This fascinating documentary has rarely been seen since the original film was broadcast in the late seventies and as such will be highly anticipated by the large and devoted fan base still commanded by Man and as such gives a great insight into what the band were all about during their seventies heyday.
