Blades Of Glory (2007): When rival figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) go ballistic in an embarrassing no-holds-barred fight at the World Championships they are stripped of their gold medals and banned from the sport for life. Now three-and-a-half years on they've found a loophole that will allow them to compete: if they can put aside their differences they can skate together - in pairs' figure skating.... Zoolander (2001): Clear the runway for Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) VH1's three-time male model of the year. His face falls when hippie-chic he's so hot right now Hansel (Owen Wilson) scooters in to steal this year's award. The evil fashion guru Mugatu (Will Ferrell) seizes the opportunity to turn Derek into a killing machine. It's a well-designed conspiracy and only with the help of Hansel and a few well-chosen accessories like Matilda (Christine Taylor) can Derek make the world safe for male models everywhere! Ben Stiller's Zoolander is an endearingly broad silly off-the-wall comedy to be enjoyed by beautiful people everywhere. Strike a pose! Team America (2004): An elite U.S. counter-terrorism squad loses a member while decimating half of Paris in the reckless pursuit of Middle Eastern maniacs; a Broadway actor with a traumatic childhood secret is naturally hired to replace him. Oh and they're all marionettes. South Park maestros Trey Parker and Matt Stone (along with co-writer Pam Brady) came up with this shameless satire of pea-brained Hollywood action flicks and even smaller-minded global politics so don't expect subtlety or even a hint of good taste. Team America is soon on the trail of North Korea's evil Kim Jong Il who treats us to a tender song about his loneliness before ensnaring Alec Baldwin and the rest of the oblivious Film Actors Guild (F.A.G. for short) in a plot to blow up every major city on the planet. Just as the mindless squad cheerfully demolishes everything in sight so do director Parker and company. Throwing punches Left Right and in-between the movie's politics leave no turn un-stoned; there's even time to bludgeon the musical Rent. It's offensive irresponsible comic anarchy seemingly made by sniggering little boys. Painfully funny sniggering little boys... Wayne's World (1992): Wayne and Garth the horny heavy metal-loving teenage heroes of the popular Saturday Night Live skit hit the big screen. They're still doing their cable-access show out of the Wayne's basement in Aurora Illinois; only now a sleazy TV executive named Benjamin Oliver wants a piece of the action. As the babe 'n' band obsessed adolescents negotiate the shark-infested waters of network television Wayne finds 'amore' in the form of a heavy metal femme fatale with a penchant for skin-tight costumes. The twist of this private-eye show is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, subsequently popping up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cosy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show could afford a high calibre of special guest villains and dolly birds. A recent remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. This disc contains episodes one and two: "My Late Lamented Friend and Partner" and "A Disturbing Case". --Kim Newman

The breakthrough feature of experimental filmmaker Gregg Araki, The Living End also marked a seminal moment in the New Queer Cinema movement of the 1990s. A startling synthesis of thriller, love story, comedy and road movie, it's a consciously political and uncompromising work that confronts mainstream America's fear of AIDs. Luke (Mike Dytri) is a rootless hustler who's determined to live fast, die young, and make a beautiful corpse, while Jon (Craig Gilmore) is a freelance writer whose life and stability are devastated when he finds out he's HIV positive. They meet by chance (or is it fate?), and when Luke kills a cop, they take to the road, embarking on a wild odyssey with devastating consequences. Peppered with film references, specifically to other movies featuring couples on the run and powered by a soundtrack heavy on industrial music, The Living End is propelled by rage and indignation.
Sheryl Crow fans looking for a straightforward concert video can't go wrong with this 83-minute set, recorded in Detroit during the Globe Sessions tour of early 1999. Appearing in black leather pants and a black string-strap top, Cheryl is poised and professional, driving through 15 songs (nine from The Globe Sessions) with studio-set precision, despite the handicap of a receptive but oddly lifeless audience. (Perhaps the Motor City was merely idling that night.) Moving from acoustic guitar to bass, electric guitar, harmonica (on "It Don't Hurt"), and finally piano (for an exquisite rendition of "Home"), the Grammy winner makes it clear that she's as musically skilled as she is drop-dead gorgeous. Accompanied by a flawless six-piece band (with honorable mentions to guitarist Peter Stroud and violinist Lorenza Ponce), Crow rocks when it's time to rock (the climactic jam on "Riverwide" and "If It Makes You Happy" being standouts), but her strength remains in the more delicate passages of "Am I Getting Through", "The Kind", "Stong Enough", and the aforementioned "Home", an encore visually enhanced by rural images projected on an upstage scrim. Crow dedicates the set-closing rocker "Mississippi" to Bob Dylan, and even if a few favoured hits are not included, this remains a noteworthy performance. Camera coverage is slick and editing tight, and while VHS viewers will likely be satisfied, the DTS DVD is mildly problematic, failing to achieve the "you-are-there" dynamics that videophiles have a right to expect. Fortunately, the concert itself is not compromised; the recording is crisp and carefully mixed. Crow no doubt had more lively gigs during this particular tour, but with an accommodating stage and a first-rate band in good spirits, this was a pretty good night to have the cameras around. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
