From Mike White (HBO's Enlightened), The White Lotus is a sharp social satire following the exploits of various employees and guests at an exclusive Hawaiian resort over the span of one highly transformative week. Checking into the luxurious White Lotus are a young couple fresh off their fairytale wedding, a woman mourning the death of her mother, and a high-powered executive, accompanied by her less successful husband, their teen son, and college-age daughter, who's brought along her best friend for the trip. Looking to relax and rejuvenate in paradise, the vacationers are greeted by the resort manager and head of spa services, who soon find themselves catering to their guests' every whim - no matter how unreasonable - while juggling stressors in their own lives. As darker dynamics emerge with each passing day, this biting six-episode limited series gradually reveals the complex truths of the seemingly picture-perfect travelers, cheerful hotel employees, and idyllic locale itself. Product Features Disc 1: Invitation to the Set - Show creator Mike White and the cast share some of the themes and characters to expect in The White Lotus. Expanding their one-joke skit from US television's Saturday Night Live, Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell are Doug and Steve Butabi, the wearers of the rayon suits and Speedo trunks who bob their heads in unison to dance music while unsuccessfully preying on women in clubs. What's funny in a three-minute piece doesn't always get funnier by expansion, but Kattan and Ferrell give it a go with fellow SNL member Molly Shannon as their ambitious neighbour. By day they work in their father's fake-plant store. By night they prowl the club scene after spraying on the cologne in their gauchely decorated bedroom. A fender-bender with Richard Grieco (playing himself) gets them into the popular club the Roxbury, but it's not all good news, as the brothers soon find themselves torn apart. Doug and Steve are pathetic but lovable, mostly due to the actors' talents for self-deprecating humour. All gifted comedians, Kattan, Ferrell, and Shannon obviously feel comfortable around each other, and their love triangle (which prompts send-ups of Say Anything and Jerry Maguire) is the funniest joke in this mostly lame comedy. Too bad, because it clocks in at about 80 minutes and could have run on television as a pretty good episode of SNL, which has been known to get a bit lame itself. --Shannon Gee

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs, mugging gleefully through Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, naturally) suffering from panic attacks who makes a shrink (Crystal, naturally) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and formulaic director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in cinemas (and De Niro's biggest film ever)--would seem more fresh. De Niro is definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, Analyze This is breezy fun. --David Kronke

Merchant-Ivory leave heaving corsets behind for the contemporary world of Americans in Paris in Le Divorce. The day Isabel Walker (Kate Hudson) comes to visit her pregnant sister Roxy (Naomi Watts) is the day Roxy's French husband leaves her. The divorce proceedings centre around a painting, long owned by the Walkers, that the husband's family would like to claim--but their manoeuvrings are complicated when Isabel begins an affair with a diplomat (Thierry Lhermitte) who just happens to be Roxy's uncle-in-law. At its best moments, Le Divorce has the feel of one of Woody Allen's serio-comic films like Hannah and Her Sisters, and there's a genuinely suspenseful climactic scene on the Eiffel Tower. There's also a star-studded supporting cast, including Leslie Caron, Glenn Close, Matthew Modine, Stephen Fry, Sam Waterston and Stockard Channing. --Bret Fetzer
